Nestor Hernández, 1961-2006

Nestor Hernández died last night in Washington, D.C..  He was 45 years old.  We will miss him dearly.  He was a photographer, a magician, a teacher, a Cuban and a friend.  I first met him during a trip to Cuba in 1979.

One anecdote encapsulates his talent and his soul.  Immediately after Elián was rescued from his kidnappers in Miami, we organized a small children´s party in my backyard.  I invited Nestor to come and perform some magic tricks for the kids.  He came and entertained the children all afternoon with his magic.  But Nestor was also a top notch photographer.  He politely asked whether he could photograph the guests, including Elián.  I was concerned about the young boy´s privacy, since it was immediately after the rescue and there was far too much media attention on the seven year old boy.  Nestor promised not to publish any of his pictures and proceeded to take the finest photographs I´ve ever seen of Elián.  He could have sold those photographs for thousands of dollars, since the press was anxious to get their hands on pictures of Elián in Washington.

But Nestor was true to his word.  He didn´t sell the photographs.  When I learned how much money he had been offered for the pictures, I asked him why hadn´t he sold them.  "The boy deserves some privacy, and I gave you my word.  My word is worth more than money," he said.  "I was just glad that I could be bring a little bit of joy with my magic to that boy.  He´s been through so much," he added.

Instead of selling the Elián photographs, Nestor put together an album and sent it as a gift to Juan Miguel González in Cuba.

He was a brilliant photographer, and his soul will live forever in his art.

His photos of Ewe master kente weaver Bobbo Ahiagble of Ghana are featured in the award winning children’s book, “Master Weaver from Ghana” published in 1998 by Open Hand Press. He plans to continue this project in Côte D’Ivoire, Kenya and Mali, photographing traditional spinners and weavers in those countries.

His other major photo-documentary project “Cuba Reflections: A Photographic Journey,” is the result of nearly 20 trips to the island nation since 1978, most recently in 2002 and 2003. His trips to Cuba have concentrated on linking US and Cuban photographers through cultural exchange photography projects and exhibitions. In 2003, he is directing an extensive collaborative arts project, taking photography and art teachers to the island to work with Cuban children.

His images have been included in many shows Washington, D.C. and various American cities, as well as in Havana, Cuba and Accra, Ghana, and his photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Casa de Africa museum and Galería de Arte René Portocarrero in Cuba, Asafo Gallery in Ghana, the Cuban Art Space in New York and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibit shows children at play and at work and otherwise interacting with their own environments, and while some are unaware of the camera’s presence, others are ready to have their images captured forever,   Forever Young.

INSIDE CUBA: A Photographic Journey by Nestor Hernandez
June 4 - June 27, 1999  Center for Collaborative Art and Visual Education (CAVE), Washington, DC

The Center for Collaborative Art and Visual Education in Washington, D.C. presents "INSIDE CUBA: A Photographic Journey", an exhibit of over 90 photographs by Nestor Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez is a Washington based photographer of Afro-Cuban descent. This exhibit draws from images taken on eight trips to Cuba since 1978. His work documents the cultural rhythms of the Cuban people, the grandeur of its architecture, and the events that shape this Caribbean nation known as the "Pearl of the Antilles". Wonderfully intimate, lyrical, and - perhaps most of all - suffused with a sense of timelessness, Mr. Hernandez's work connects the viewer with the spirit of Cuba.
