"I am Cuban" 
Says the North American fighter, John Gilman
when decorated with the Medal of Friendship

"For his extensive history in favor of solidarity with Cuba, his steadfast struggle in favor of peace and friendship among persons of good will, he deserves, not only the Medal he has just been awarded but, also, all the affection and recognition of the Cuban people” expressed Enrique Román, first vice president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in an event where this revolutionary from the United States, John Gilman, received the Medal of Friendship.

This treasured award, granted by Resolution 3726 of the Council of State, was pinned on his chest by Sergio Corrieri, ICAP President and member of the Central Committee of the Party, in the presence of a full audience that included members of the US delegation accompanying Gilman.

The person receiving this homage, defender of the Revolution and admirer of Fidel since 1959, is the head of the Wisconsin Committee for Peace and Justice. From his city, Milwaukee , he denounces, in numerous articles, the criminal blockade of his Government, defends the freedom to travel of US citizens, supports the caravans of the Pastors for Peace and participated actively for the return of our child, Elián González.

Gilman, a veteran of the Second World War, collects funds to support our Five Heroes with whom he maintains a fluid exchange of correspondence, primarily with Fernando who is a prisoner in his state.

For all these reasons, as Enrique Román pointed out, the words of Martí are fitting to describe him when he said: “When there are many men lacking dignity there are always others who have the dignity of many men ...”

In his words of gratitude, Gilman declared that millions of US citizens are, today, aware that it is necessary to prevent those governing the country from harming countries that are so close to us. “I’m a Cuban”, he said smiling, in the midst of the audience's applause.

condecorado con la Medalla de la Amistad

"Su extenso historial a favor de la solidaridad con Cuba, su lucha sin desmayo por la paz y la amistad entre los hombres de buena voluntad, le hacen acreedor no solo de la Medalla que acaba de recibir, sino también de todo el cariño y el reconocimiento del pueblo cubano", expresó Enrique Román, vicepresidente primero del Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP), en el acto donde fue galardonado con la Medalla de la Amistad el revolucionario norteamericano John Gilman.

El preciado galardón, otorgado por el acuerdo 3726 del Consejo de Estado, le fue impuesto por Sergio Corrieri, presidente del ICAP y miembro del Comité Central del Partido, ante una notable concurrencia, en la que se encontraban los integrantes de la delegación de norteamericanos que acompañan a Gilman.

El homenajeado, defensor de la Revolución y admirador de Fidel desde 1959, preside el Comité del estado de Wisconsin para la Paz y la Justicia. Desde su ciudad, Milwaukee, denuncia en artículos el criminal bloqueo de su Gobierno, es defensor de la libertad de viajes de los ciudadanos norteamericanos, apoya las caravanas de los Pastores por la Paz y tuvo una participación activa en la lucha por el regreso de nuestro niño Elián González.

Gilman, veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, recauda fondos para ayudar a nuestros Cinco Héroes; con quienes mantiene fluido intercambio de correspondencia, en particular con Fernando, por encontrarse prisionero en su estado.

Por todo lo anterior, como apuntó Enrique Román, a él se le pueden atribuir las palabras de Martí, cuando dijo: "Cuando hay muchos hombres sin decoro, hay siempre otros que tienen en sí el decoro de muchos hombres...".

En palabras de agradecimiento, Gilman afirmó que millones de norteamericanos están hoy conscientes de que es necesario evitar que quienes gobiernan a su país sigan haciendo daño a países tan queridos como el nuestro. "Soy cubano", dijo sonriente, entre aplausos de los presentes.
