Cuba informed the U.S. of a plot to
assassinate Ronald Reagan in 1984:
Fidel Castro in a speech to the Cuban Council of State, June 9, 1989, said:

I can give you an example of something that happened no so long ago. Cuban intelligence learned that a group of reactionary elements in one U.S. state, I don't remember the exact facts right now, was planning to assassinate Reagan, plotting to murder Reagan! The information we had wasn't very precise and to find out more we would have had to carry out an investigation in the United States. However, not even 48 hours went buy, I believe it was less than 24 hours, when I gave instructions to the Ministry of the Interior to report confidentially to the U.S. authorities that some people in a southern state of the United States were plotting to assassinate Reagan when he visited that state soon. We immediately informed them of this. We didn't waste a minute on investigations nor did we wait to make checks or to see if Reagan was killed. We didn't stop to think that Reagan was a sworn enemy of the Revolution, and that his policy on Cuba was very aggressive. We thought it was an elementary duty to repost something like this.
I
think that the only two times we've done anything for Reagan were when he was
actually shot and wounded and we conveyed to the U.S. Government our concern for
what had happened, our opposition to that. And the other time was when he
learned that some people wanted to murder the President of the United States,
and we didn't hesitate to report it...We didn't make it known then, it is only
now that we're bringing it up --- it must have happened a few years ago because
we have no choice but to recall the incident now.

Pero puedo citar un ejemplo que ocurrió no hace mucho tiempo. Llegaron a Cuba, a
través de la inteligencia, noticias de que un grupo de elementos reaccionarios
de un estado norteamericano --- ahora mismo no me acuerdo de los datos exactos
–-, estaban hablando de hacerle un atentado a Reagan, ¡estaban hablando de
hacerle un atentado a Reagan! Los datos que nosotros teníamos no eran muy
precisos, porque para precisarlos más teníamos nosotros mismos que ponernos a
hacer una investigación en Estados Unidos.
Sin embargo, no pasaron ni 48 horas, yo creo que no pasaron ni 24 horas, sin que
yo le diera instrucciones al Ministerio del Interior de informarles
confidencialmente a las autoridades norteamericanas que había unos señores, unos
elementos de un estado en el sur de Estados Unidos, hablando de hacerle un
atentado a Reagan en una próxima visita por ese estado. Inmediatamente se lo
informamos. No perdimos un minuto en hacer investigaciones, a comprobar o
esperar que mataran a Reagan. No nos acordamos de que Reagan era un enemigo
jurado de la Revolución, y de que tenia una política muy agresiva contra Cuba,
consideramos un deber elemental informar si había una cosa de esa naturaleza.
Creo que las dos únicas veces que hemos tenido un gesto por Reagan fue cuando
realmente lo hirieron y nosotros le trasmitimos al Gobierno de Estados Unidos
nuestra preocupación por lo ocurrido, nuestro rechazo. Y en esta ocasión en que
llegan noticias de gente que quiere hacer un atentado al Presidente de Estados
Unidos, nosotros no vacilamos en comunicarlo. No lo publicamos, sale ahora a
relucir --- esto debe haber pasado hace algunos años --- porque no queda más
remedio que recordar este precedente.
De la misma forma en que nosotros les hicimos llegar a ellos esa información,
ellos pudieran habernos hecho llegar la información de que disponían sobre esto,
de forma confidencial, como nosotros lo hicimos con ellos. Eso es realmente lo
que nos duele.
