JUVENAL BALÁNWe need more farms like Juana’s, was a comment repeated along the halls and salons of Convention Palace after listening to this woman from the countryside at the 19th worker’s Congress. Her discourse came at the right time when the delegates had called for efficiency that has become a principle of Cuban workers.

Indicators, such as a 50 cent cost of production per weight and uninterrupted profitability that now counts 22 years, are indications of the effective work of Juana María Blanco Santos who said she was convinced that there is no better formula than working and working.

That is what she has known how to do since she was 20 – she is now 57 – when working in the cane fields did not frighten her and, to the amazement of many, she took on all tasks in the sugar sector.

I’m intent on being efficient and demand more of myself, she explains. I will never forget when I began as a breeder of chickens and a few little birds died.

— What did I do? I spoke to specialists, asked for references and almost became a veterinarian.

The result couldn’t have been better: a few years later she was chosen as the best chicken breeder in the country, a recognition that allowed her to enjoy the then-Soviet Union as an incentive.

Nothing is by chance; 22 years of profitable work in one of the farms of the UBPC (Basic Unit of Cooperative Production) in Guayo, Sancti Spiritus, demonstrates the dedication which has proclaimed Juana national vanguard all that time and still more: Heroine of Work of the Republic of Cuba, a title granted her last May 1st.

— If I am not profitable I don’t think that I have earned my salary honorably and that I do not fulfill the needs of the child care centers and schools who expect the viands and vegetables from my harvests. I always have a careful control. I am the one who does the economy of what I produce.

The farm Juana heads is also an example of rationality. It is impressive to know that only eight workers: six producers and two night watchmen guarantee an unfailing quality and quantity of products.

— I am happy because this is the third time I have participated in congresses of the union movement and in no other has it been so clear nor so insistence in the need to produce with efficiency such as this, Juana la espirituana concluded.
