Against annexation

(A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.)

I felt overcome by a combination of sadness and outrage as I read Roberto J. Pique’s letter An Annexationist Proposal [Correo, August 26] expressing the author’s wishes to turn the Caribbean into another state of the American Union. He adds that Cuba’s annexation to the United States is on its way to becoming a fact and points out that there are already some Cuban-American legislators in the U.S. Congress who, in practice, represent the aspirations and expectations of the Cubans in the island.

How sad it is to see that despite the Cuban people’s long tradition of struggle, that there are people who call themselves Cuban and wish nonetheless to see Cuba turn into an appendix, a colony or a province of the United States.

I dare saying that such possibility would be rejected by most Cubans, whether they are in the island or in exile.

The Cuban-American representatives in Washington are not spokespersons of the Cuban people’s democratic aspirations; on the contrary, they are liable for the implementation by the U.S. government of inhuman, cruel and ineffective policies on that same people. Far from using their position to work for the economic and political benefit of their home country, Cuba, and their adopted country, the United States, these Congress members have been and still are the architects of a policy of hatred and revenge at the expense of the legitimate interests of both peoples.
