Biographical sketch of Fidel

For those of us who have known Fidel Castro (and love and admire him) it is difficult to write a brief biographical sketch of him. Because, contrary to what those who only know him from the news, can think (a press that is often hostile). He is not an easy personage to define but quite complex.

Above all, it must be said that he is genius. Not merely a genius but many.

He was first known as a guerrilla genius. Later he, also, demonstrated that he was a genius as statesman, one of the greatest of his time, being greater than all of them for having governed for so long with great skill and, perhaps, very successfully, confronting the greatest power of the world in unequal conditions.

It also should be added that he is a great genius of oratory; I would say not only one of the greatest orators of his time but of all history. It is amazing to witness how he captures his audience in Cuba and in any other country speaking for hours and hours, without written speeches as Demosthenes did and, at times without even having the prepared but completely improvised. Contrary to his rivals, the presidents of the United States who, according to Gore Vidal cannot write their own speeches but rely on others to write them and, sometimes, then cannot even read them.

A genius also in his great wealth of knowledge. He is profound in subjects of agriculture, medicine, economy (perhaps the greatest world economist about the foreign debt), electronics, energy resources and many more subjects.

Gabriel García Márquez has told me how wisely and deeply he has read one of his novels that he analyzed the morning after reading it at night.

A few years ago he decided to study Liberation Theology of which he knew nothing and some theologians of this Theology how he became an expert on it.

I could also add that he has a great memory. I myself witnessed how a subject had been left inconclusive ten years ago, he retook when he saw me again (as with all the people he sees).

Also he is famous for his skill at remembering numbers and doing instant math operations.

As someone who has known him personally I can testify that he is fascinating, caring, with a soft voice, courteous and even tender. He becomes friendly from the very beginning. He is witty and always induces laughter.

All this explains that for the people of Cuba he has been an indispensable personage, who has governed for so long (not with weapons because he does not govern with weapons) and who is immensely popular. And, even, having the enemies he has.

Semblanza de Fidel

Para quienes hemos conocido a Fidel Castro (y lo queremos y admiramos) es difícil hacer una breve semblanza de él. Porque contrario a lo que pueden pensar los que solo lo conocen por los periódicos (muchas veces hostiles a él) no es un personaje simple de definir, sino sumamente complejo.

Ante todo hay que decir que es una personalidad genial. Pero no es solamente un genio, sino muchos genios.

Se le conoció primero como un genio guerrillero. Después se ha revelado ser también un genio como estadista: uno de los más grandes estadistas de su tiempo, destacándose sobre todos ellos por haber gobernado tantos años con gran habilidad, o si se quiere con mucho éxito, enfrentándose al poder más grande del mundo en condiciones tan desiguales.

Hay que agregar además que es un gran genio de la oratoria, yo diría que no solo es de los más grandes oradores de su tiempo, sino de toda la historia. Es asombroso ver cómo cautiva al auditorio, en Cuba y en cualquier otro país, hablando horas y horas, sin tener los discursos escritos como lo hacía Demóstenes, y a veces sin haberlos preparado siquiera, completamente improvisados. A diferencia de sus rivales los presidentes de Estados Unidos, que al decir de Gore Vidal no pueden escribir sus propios discursos si no tienen a alguien que se los escriba, y a veces ni siquiera los pueden leer.

Es un genio también en una gran cantidad de conocimientos. Es profundo en temas de agricultura, en temas de medicina, en economía (tal vez el más grande experto mundial en cuanto a la deuda externa), en electrónica, recursos energéticos, y muchas cosas más.

Gabriel García Márquez me ha contado del acierto y profundidad con que ha analizado por la mañana una novela suya que acababa de leer la noche antes.

Hace unos pocos años decidió estudiar la Teología de la Liberación, de la que no sabía nada, y algunos teólogos de esta Teología me han contado cómo había llegado a ser un experto en ella.

Podría agregar también que es genial en cuanto a la memoria: yo mismo soy testigo de cómo un tema inconcluso del que había conversado conmigo hacía diez años lo retomó cuando me volvió a ver diez años después (siendo tantas las personas que él ve).

También es famosa su facilidad para retener los números y para hacer operaciones matemáticas instantáneas.

Como alguien que lo ha tratado personalmente algunas veces, puedo atestiguar que es una personalidad fascinante: afectuoso, de voz muy suave, cortés, y aun tierno. Familiariza con cualquiera desde el primer momento. Es ingenioso, ocurrente, y siempre hace reír...

Todo esto explica que para el pueblo de Cuba haya sido un personaje indispensable, que haya gobernado por tanto tiempo (no por las armas, pues no gobierna por las armas) y que tenga tan inmensa popularidad. Y también que tenga los enemigos que tiene.
