I’ve spent time in Cuba during several periods: the first time as a guest and later, several times more as an exile. Since the Cuban Revolution burst on the scene our America was shaken. In Rio de la Plata, cultural sectors had mostly looked to Europe but the Revolution made us look to Latin America not only to assume the problems of the subcontinent but also to assess the power and pressure of the United States.

As for the personality of Fidel himself, I must say that I was with him several times and could understand the clarity of his proposals, an unexpected and excellent cultural level, his frankness against our objections and iron will to defend and improve the level of his people.

Figures easily proved, that there are virtually no illiterate in the island (I witnessed an octogenarian receive primary school classes), the fact that health care is free and of a higher quality (people even come from my country constantly for attention of their cataracts or even blindness and are treated free of charge, returning completely cured). These are things that should not be forgotten when evaluating his path.

Now, with his well won eighties it is good to give him our sincere acknowledgement.

He pasado en Cuba varios períodos: la primera vez como invitado y luego varias más como exiliado. Desde su estallido, la Revolución Cubana fue una gran sacudida para nuestra América. En el Río de la Plata, los sectores culturales habían atendido primordialmente a Europa, pero la Revolución nos hizo mirar a América Latina. No sólo para interiorizarnos de los problemas del subcontinente sino también para aquilatar el poder y la presión de los Estados Unidos.

En cuanto a la personalidad del propio Fidel, debo consignar que estuve varias veces con él y pude apreciar la sencillez de sus planteos, un inesperado y excelente nivel cultural, la franqueza de que hacía gala ante nuestras objeciones y su infranqueable voluntad de defender y mejorar el nivel de su pueblo.

Los datos, fácilmente comprobables, de que en la isla virtualmente no existen analfabetos (pude ver a octogenarios que asistían a clases de enseñanza primaria), que la atención a la salud es gratuita y del mejor nivel (de mi propio país viajan constantemente enfermos de cataratas y hasta de ceguera, que son atendidos gratuitamente y regresan totalmente recuperados), no deben olvidarse a la hora de juzgar su trayectoria.

En esta ocasión de sus bien ganados ochenta, es bueno que le regalemos nuestro sincero reconocimiento.

(El texto que antecede fue escrito antes del contratiempo de salud sufrido por Fidel y que tuvo una trascendencia a nivel mundial, algo que confirma lo que algún especialista señaló: que Fidel es el único gran personaje del pasado cercano que aun sobrevive. Según las noticias que llegan de la isla, Fidel se está recuperando más rápidamente de lo que se preveía. Siempre ha sido un hombre fuerte y de poderosa voluntad, así que no sería de extrañar que a corto plazo ejerciera nuevamente sus tradicionales funciones. Ojalá).
