Hard times

Since last December 17, when the respective chief executives of Cuba and the United States announced the rapprochement –whose first result was had that very day, when the three Cubans who were still prisoners came home and the Island released the two persons requested by its nearest neighbor– many opinions about the road just opened before the two countries have appeared.
One of the most repeated phrases, with some variations, is that the real challenge begins with that decision. So then, what is the term to describe the past 56 years?

As historical documents show, for more than half a century since the very January 1st 1959, we have not had understandings.

 After clashes of all kinds, just two years later, relations were severed. Cubans have been attacked in all possible ways. We have been squeezed by means of the most terrible and criticized policies to literally kill us by hunger. Hot, cold, warm, and all temperature wars; biological aggression... and not just the ones recorded in secret documents that have come to light.
An economic persecution carried out with pinpoint accuracy, in order to prevent us, if possible, even from breathing. An all-out, complete and rigid blockade, although many still try to sugar-coat it with the term “embargo” that for the past 20 years has been criticized and condemned by almost one hundred percent of the member states of the United Nations.

 Hundreds of dead –even a single one would have been too many.  Good and innocent blood spilled for the simple crime that we Cubans have had wanting to be independent.
Today, we have sat at a negotiating table like civilized people despite the fact that irreconcilable differences persist. We did not get there by giving in, but by our rival's recognition that its policies had failed and it was left isolated. This, translated into plain English, means we got there as winners. Today, having maintained our positions all along, it is time for us to reap the rewards.

 We have been faithful to our long-standing discourse: as equals we are willing to talk about everything and with everyone. Our hand has always been held out to all those who wanted to take it; but never to those who pretended to overpower us.
I am totally convinced that complex times are to come. The usual hysterical persons in the United States cry out against any rapprochement. The official representatives of the neighbor make it clear that they will change their methods, but that the goals remain. Or rather: the goal which has always been one and the same.

 That we know quite well and for a half-century we have repelled aggression and prepared better every day. So I continue with the questions.

 Is it more difficult to have our five brothers back home, than all the suffering they and their families endured being unable to pay their last respects to their loved ones who passed away?

In times of sporting events, it shall be necessary to be a very good chess player to anticipate, and play the best game to obtain the best results. But let us put things in their rightful place. The sacrifice that all of us Cubans have suffered IS the truly difficult thing that has happened.
If not, why did we take all those steps on the way to rapprochement and, above all, on the way to understanding?
On several occasions the words of our Commander in Chief –when he said, as early as 1959, that the road ahead of us would be much harder– have been taken out of context. Sure, we had to build the Revolution on very strong foundations to make it invincible. We had to build a different Cuba that had never existed in 500 years. The conditions were different then and the reasoning today –just as Fidel has taught us– has to be different.

 We are a people forged in struggle against open war and the secret war; a people that have proven to be ready for sacrifice; a people that have graduated more than a million university professionals, and a much higher number of technicians and workers at other levels; a people that achieved its levels of health, culture and education.
A people like the Cuban people, respected and recognized internationally, is ready to face whatever may come and to again pass the test. I think that that people, who know how thorny it will be to proceed along the road just taken, cannot be told that the immediate future is the truly difficult period. To do so would not honor the work that, in terms of ultimate sacrifice, we have built.

 

    
   

 
       
       

Los momentos difíciles

Desde que el pasado 17 de diciembre, los respectivos primeros mandatarios de Cuba y Estados Unidos anunciaron el proceso de acercamiento, cuyo primer resultado se llevó a cabo precisamente ese mismo día, cuando regresaron a casa los tres cubanos que todavía permanecían prisioneros y la Isla entregó las dos personas solicitadas por el cercano vecino, han aparecido muchas opiniones con respecto al camino que se abre ante los dos países.

Una de las frases más repetidas, con algunas variantes, es que lo verdaderamente difícil comienza a partir de esa decisión. Entonces, ¿cuál es el calificativo para denominar estos 56 años?

Durante ese más de medio siglo, no hemos tenido entendimientos, incluso desde el mismo primero de enero de 1959, como está recogido en documentos históricos.

Luego de enfrentamientos de todo tipo, sólo dos años después se rompieron las relaciones. Los cubanos hemos sido agredidos en todas las variantes posibles. Nos han tratado de exprimir con la más terribles y criticadas políticas para, literalmente, matarnos por hambre. Guerras calientes, frías, tibias y de todas las temperaturas. Agresiones biológicas sufridas, no sólo las escritas en documentos secretos que un día salieron a la luz.

Una persecución económica llevada a cabo de forma milimétrica, con el objetivo de impedirnos, de ser posible, hasta el respirar. Un bloqueo mondo y lirondo, total y abierto, aunque muchos todavía se desgasten en edulcorarlo con el sustantivo de embargo y que durante los últimos 20 años ha sido criticado y condenado por casi el ciento por ciento de los miembros de la Organización de Naciones Unidas.

Centenares de muertos, donde incluso uno solo ya hubiera sido demasiado. Sangre buena e inocente derramada, por el simple delito de que los cubanos hemos querido ser independientes.

Hoy, cuando nos hemos sentado en una mesa de negociaciones como personas civilizadas, aunque persistan las diferencias irreconciliables. Hoy, cuando no llegamos allí por claudicar, sino por el reconocimiento del rival de que su política fracasó y quedaron aislados, lo cual, traducido al buen español, significa que llegamos como triunfadores. Hoy, cuando hemos mantenido nuestras posiciones, nos toca recoger los frutos.

Hemos sido fieles al discurso que siempre mantuvimos: de igual a igual estamos dispuesto a conversar de todo y con todos. Nuestra mano siempre ha estado lista para todos aquellos que han querido tomarla, pero nunca para los pretendientes al avasallamiento.

Estoy  completamente convencido de que vienen tiempos complejos. Los histéricos de siempre en Estados Unidos, se rasgan vestiduras en contra de cualquier acercamiento. Las voces oficiales representantes del vecino, dejan bien claro que cambiarán los métodos, pero mantendrán los objetivos. O mejor dicho, el objetivo, que siempre ha sido uno sólo.

Todo eso lo sabemos y llevamos medio siglo repeliendo las agresiones y preparándonos cada día mejor. Entonces sigo con los cuestionamientos.

¿Acaso es más difícil tener a nuestros cinco hermanos en casa, comparado con todo el sufrimiento por el que pasaron sus familias, con el fallecimiento de seres queridos a los que no pudieron rendirle el último homenaje?

En tiempos de celebraciones deportivas, será necesario ser muy buen ajedrecista para anticiparse, jugar la mejor partida y sacar los mejores dividendos. Pero ubicando las cosas en su justo lugar. El sacrificio que todos, como pueblo cubano hemos padecido, SI es lo verdaderamente difícil que ha ocurrido.

Si no, ¿para qué dimos todos esos pasos en camino al acercamiento y, sobre todo, en camino al entendimiento?

También en varias ocasiones, se han sacado de contexto las palabras del Comandante en Jefe, cuando dijera, en el mismo 1959, que el camino que teníamos enfrente sería mucho más difícil. Claro, debimos construir la Revolución, con cimientos muy fuertes y de forma invencible. Debimos construir una Cuba diferente que en 500 años nunca había existido. Las condiciones eran diferentes y los análisis, tal y como nos ha enseñado Fidel, en la actualidad tienen que ser diferentes.

Un pueblo forjado en la lucha, contra la guerra abierta y contra la secreta. Un pueblo que ha demostrado estar listo para el sacrificio, pero que ha graduado a más de un millón de profesionales universitarios y una cifra mucho más alta de  técnicos y obreros en otros niveles. Un pueblo al que nadie le ha regalado sus índices de salud, cultura y educación.

Un pueblo como el cubano, respetado y reconocido internacionalmente, está listo para enfrentar todo lo que pueda venir y volver a salir airoso del examen. Creo que a ese pueblo, que sabe muy bien lo espinoso del andar que acaba de emprender, no se le puede calificar lo por vivir, como el período verdaderamente difícil. Esa posición, sería no rendirle homenaje a la obra que, en condiciones de máximo sacrificio, hemos construido.
