THE US BLOCKADE OF CUBA ON THE
70th ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED NATIONS

Just a few days ago, in Havana, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez disclosed that Cuba will again this year introduce in the United Nations General Assembly a draft resolution entitled: “Need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”.

In this next period of sessions, the United Nations General Assembly will consider for the twenty-fourth consecutive year this all-important issue to the international community.

It must be recalled that International Law protects all States, be they large or small, rich or poor, and guarantees not only the independence of them all but also their right to exercise their national sovereignty, which is the basis of the sovereign equality of all nations on Earth.

Many in Our America, and in the rest of the world, wonder how the US Representative in the United Nations will vote on this issue, since during the past twenty three years, Washington has, with the sole support of Israel, opposed in the international body the lifting of the blockade that the Cuban people has suffered for over half a century.

This will be the first time in which the International community, which has always overwhelmingly  supported  Cuba –because it is also affected the blockade– will vote against this inhuman measure,

This time, it is expected, the draft resolution will have the support of President Barack Obama, who has recognized the failure of the so-called embargo and has asked the US Congress to lift it.

And many ask themselves: What will the US representative do on the day of the voting at the United Nations?

Will he do the same thing that has been done for the past twenty three years, and ignore the fact that on seventeen December last both Presidents Raul Castro and Barak Obama announced the beginning of a process for the reestablishment of full relations between the two countries?

And how will the Representative of Israel vote? Israel, the imperial police state in the Middle East, which has committed horrendous crimes against the Palestinian people and which has shared with Washington the twenty three consecutive humiliating defeats at the United Nations?

The answers to these questions will be known in a few months, in this year which marks the seventieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Organization.

All of us around the world will be able to enjoy the voting through direct satellite television broadcasts, from the landmark United Nations building, built by that genius of architecture, the Brazilian Oscar Niemayer, a fast friend of the Cuban Revolution.
