“Fifty Shades of Grey” Keeps Breaking Records

Expert reviews unanimously say that it is a bummer, a pasteurized horror; but still, the film adaptation of E.L. James 'Fifty Shades of Grey" continues its steady path at the box office, breaking all kinds of records. Monday it knocked off the international box office record for a film for adult audiences in the history of Universal Studios.
The erotic romance film has drawn $338 million outside the United States, breaking the previous record which was held by “Ted”, Seth McFarlane’s creation about a talking bear, released in 2012.
Last weekend, the film starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan made another $36 million dollars from 59 international markets, which, added to the $147 made so far in the US, place the film near the $500-million barrier, which should be overcome in the coming days.
Failing to finish its journey in the cinemas and what it will subsequently collect from digital platforms, there is no doubt that it has been a monumental business for Universal Studios. They have not yet confirmed whether there will be a second and third part based on the trilogy of novels by James, and whether Dornan will be in them, after speculation about his possible resignation due to pressure from his family environment.
It is assumed, however, that they will proceed with further deliveries –with or without Dornan– considering that the initial budget of $40 million invested in the film production has been amply covered.
It was also clear that the film was going to start deflating in the US after Saint Valentine’s weekend, when it was released. This weekend 'Focus' with Will Smith and Margot Robbie, was the winner at the box office. However, the $19 million raised by Focus so far are nothing when compared to the $50 million it cost to make it. Not every week brings a phenomenon such as that of Christian Grey and his young submissive partner Anastasia Steele.

La crítica dice de forma unánime que es un pestiño de consideración, un
horror pasteurizado, pero aún así, la adaptación al
cine de las ‘Cincuenta sombras de
Grey’ de E. L. James continúa su camino firme en taquilla, destrozando
todo tipo de marcas. Este lunes se llevó por delante una más, la de
la película más taquillera a nivel internacional para público adulto en
la historia de los estudios Universal.
En total, la cinta de corte erótico ha alcanzado los 338 millones de
dólares fuera de Estados Unidos, superando la anterior marca, que estaba
en manos de ‘Ted’, la creación de Seth McFarlane sobre un osito hablador,
estrenada en 2012.
El pasado fin de semana, el filme protagonizado por Dakota Johnson y
Jamie Dornan ingresó otros 36 millones de dólares provenientes de 59
mercados internacionales, lo que, sumado a los 147 millones que lleva
hasta el momento en EEUU, la sitúan cerca de la barrera de los 500
millones, que debería superar en los próximos días.
A falta de que termine su recorrido en las salas de cine y de añadirle
lo que recaude en plataformas digitales posteriormente, no hay duda
de que ha sido un negocio monumental para los estudios Universal, que
aún no han confirmado si habrá una segunda y una tercera parte basadas
en la trilogía de las novelas de James, y si estará Dornan en ellas,
después de la especulación sobre su posible renuncia a seguir por
presiones de su entorno familiar.
Se da por hecho, sin embargo, que seguirán adelante con más entregas
-con o sin Dornan-, teniendo en cuenta que el presupuesto inicial de 40
millones de dólares invertidos en su producción ha quedado ampliamente
cubierto.
También era evidente que la cinta se iba a ir desinflando en Estados
Unidos pasado el fin de semana de San Valentín, cuando echó a andar.
Este fin de semana ‘Focus’, con Will Smith y Margot Robbie, fue la
triunfadora en taquilla con su estreno, aunque los 19 millones de
dólares recaudados hasta el momento son poca cosa frente a los 50
millones que ha costado hacerla. No todas las semanas se da un fenómeno
como el de Christian Grey y su joven sometida Anastasia Steele.
