The testimony
of the
first Cuban who underwent sex
reassignment surgery presented in Marilyn
Solaya’s
documentary
En
el cuerpo equivocado
[In the Wrong Body]
needed
another space to reflect
gender’s diverse facets, beyond a single
personal experience. So
the filmmaker, inspired by
her earlier work, chose to shoot
the film Vestido de
Novia
[Wedding
Dress].
"In
a documentary, one establishes an ethical commitment
with real people and this
must be respected. When I
started working on
En el cuerpo
equivocado,
I said: No, I need to do
something else. Addressing the
issue through fiction
allowed me
to recreate and introduce new
life stories", said Solaya,
who was first known by the public
in her role as an actress
(Fresa
y chocolate, Despabílate amor, Omertá, La ley del silencio).
After ten
years of research and work
consolidation, the film that
won the Popularity Award
at the recent 36
Havana Film Festival, is
being shown in the capital since
Thursday, January 22,
and soon will be shown
in the main movie houses across the country.
"There were
issues related to the topic
which I had to
reassess, because they had
already been covered in other works.
Isabel Moya, director
of Revista Mujeres, and Julio
César González Pagés, Historical Sciences
PhD, advised me on
gender studies. It was then that I found
the way I would take in my
work. I started writing
from a different perspective
and the dramatic nuances of each character
changed," said
the filmmaker.
The life of
a newly married couple trying
to be happy, until a
secret from the past comes to
light, inspired the
plot of this film.
Both protagonists become victims
of prejudice. However,
the director proposes a
different synopsis:
this woman discovers that after being
released from the wrong
body in which she was born, she has not
been freed from a social
environment in which machismo
survives.
“Vestido
de novia
[Wedding
Dress] shows not only
individual conflicts, but also social conflicts.
It is true that our reality
has changed, but sexism and
all the phobias that
cause so much damage are
still dormant and
should be treated more seriously.
Homophobia is a cultural
heritage and so my
work becomes universal.
I tell a story, not
only as a filmmaker, but
as a communicator, because I
am very committed to the
space in which I am living,"
says Solaya who specialized in Management at the Audiovisual Media
School of the Higher
Institute of Art.
Green Light
Marilyn
confessed that she conceived
the script already thinking
about the actors who would play the
different roles. That is what happened
with almost everyone except
Isabel Santos.
"When I started writing
I called Luis
(Alberto Garcia)
Pichi [Jorge Perugorria] and
Laura, and told them,"
Look what I wrote for you."
Let’s say there were 20 pages. "You are
this and you are
that ... To continue
writing I need to know if
this "captures" you or
not, and they said, “Yes.” All three
gave me the green
light."
Isabel
Santos escorted by
Kirian
in
Vestido de novia
With Isabel
Santos it was
different. Marilyn
at first had in mind
the character of a
hairdresser, without knowing who would
play it. "In the
process of consolidating the
script I found Sissi.
The thing is that, in this
film, the context is also a protagonist. I
framed the story in
1994, because the first
sex reassignment operation
in Cuba had already been made.
Then these surgeries
were discontinued, thus the
importance of the presence of
Sissi, representative
of those who could not access
the reassignment”.
Since this is
a movie based on a true story,
Isabel and Laura
were helped by the people who
inspired their respective
roles: Mavis Susel
and Sissi
Linares. According to
De la Uz, who plays
the first sex-reassigned person
in Cuba,
the construction of this
character took a lot
of research. "We had the collaboration
of amazing women
who opened their hearts
and their lives to us," she acknowledged.
The
popular film actress from
Ana,
Madagascar, La pared de las palabras
and Hello Hemingway
believes
that
her job is a way
to enter other realities
that normally "one
leaves aside '.
Becoming Rosa
Elena made her understand
the true meaning of being a
woman.
For
Isabel Santos,
playing this new role
was a learning experience.
"I was greatly
moved by the confessions
of the real Sissi,
of all the paths she had treaded.
So my monologue is
like a cry; in a way it sums
up the suffering of
these people, because they are
not only discriminated
on the street, it happens
anywhere. And most
terribly: with
children ".
For her part
Kirian,
one of the dancers in the
show where Sissi takes
part in the film, had the opportunity to
play herself. And she
was super happy. But
beyond what
Vestido de Novia meant to her, the
bottom line is that "for the first time
all beautiful Cubans
in this Island, have the
chance to see a different love
story; a story not told before.
That's what this is about.
It’s about saying that love –no
matter how different it may be–
can be stronger than violence, stronger than the darkest and most
harmful human feelings.”
Engineer
Ernesto, played by Luis
Alberto García, is one of those
characters where a
real, tremendous change is seen.
"At first I did not know
how to deal with that role;
then I thought that if I
wanted to talk about
intolerance, I had to do it from the most
absolute truth. Then
I realized that my
Ernesto was just
a man in love with his
wife," said the actor.
But
other characters do not
go unnoticed by the viewer.
There are the roles
masterly played by Alina
Rodriguez, Jorge
Perugorría and Mario
Guerra, placed in Vestido de Novia
to represent the lowest human
feelings. "Bad persons
exist and they keep us
alert," emphasizes Marilyn.
"I had to
bring them in, and show these characters that
are there in
our daily lives; and
which are precisely those who
cause the making of these films, those
who with their actions lead
to creating laws and
organizing conferences against homophobia and
gender violence.”
"People
on the street "assault me"
about them, and I wonder, “Is it that
so many see themselves
reflected in these individuals?
Is it that it bothers them
that they always come out "unscathed"? For this
reason I made Ernesto so decent.
So, when people
go to the movies they will
identify with Lazaro,
with Roberto, or
with Ernesto ".
Either way,
the protagonist of
Algo más que
soñar,
Habanastation
and
of Eduardo del Llano’s
series that has Nicanor
as its center, considered
that among the great things
of the film is
the presence of negative
characters that in the end are not
held accountable. "The fact
that there is no moral
teaching makes this story more real
because... who has not dealt
with guys like these?" said
Garcia, who also
applauded the performances of
actors Omar Franco,
Alina Rodríguez
and Pancho
Garcia, with short
appearances in the film,
"for them there are no
supporting roles; they always
transform these into main characters."
Necessary tributes
Because
Solaya assumes herself
as a total feminist,
she now recognizes that
initially
she tried to be the center of an all-female
team. "I dreamed of having
only women as my colleagues
and almost made it,
but sometimes reality doesn't
match everything else.
I realized that the main thing
is to work with people who
contribute, who are sensitive,
beyond gender
and sex.
"
Marilyn Solaya intionally
gave her film the title of a poem, by
playwright and critic Norge
Espinosa, which was once
the anthem for
the LGBT (acronym
collectively referred to
lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender). It is also
her tribute to
Strawberry and Chocolate,
which premiered two decades
ago. "Undoubtedly,
Strawberry and Chocolate
marked a ‘before and after’
in Cuban society," she
said.
In fact,
Julio César González
Pagés, advisor
for this ICAIC film
co-produced with Spain,
said that, thanks to the
award-winning feature by
Titón and
Tabío [Strawberry and Chocolate], the
public received
this new disturbing
proposition so favorably. "It was good
to see the appeal
Wedding Dress
achieved during the
recently concluded Havana Film
Festival. Clearly we are
in a country of new
Cubans who address
violence generated
around diversity in a
different manner.”
"Many times,
unfortunately, we pigeon-hole
a film exclusively on
the subject of sexuality, but it
reflects many important
social angles that Cuban cinematography
had not visualized
in this way,” said the
professor.
From the point of
view of the resources used,
Wedding Dress was not
a blockbuster, said its
producer Carlos de la Huerta, who
accompanied the director the
project began in 2006.
"But –he
insisted– it is a
major film due to the subject and the risk it
entails.”
"After
the tremendous success
achieved by In the Wrong Body,
everyone began to look
more seriously at Mari [Solaya].
That was how ICAIC
got interested and authorized
the funding for the new project.
Surely, the momentum
she always generates
has been essential to getting
what she wants, such
as working, for example,
with Cuba's dream team of
actors."

Santos.
eran 20 cuartillas.
«Me
lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y transexuales).
Cuba»
