Learning to Embrace
In January we
proposed building together a page
for this special date
[February 14: Day of Love and Friendship, aka Valentine's Day].
We asked: “How to show love?”
and we received
more questions than answers, especially from
young people who are just discovering that feeling.

Sin pan
se vive; sin amor ¡no!
José Martí
[We can live without bread, but not without love]
A CubaNews translation.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.
The most
common question was;
at what point we
can call "love"
what we feel when someone
appears in our life
and it seems as if the sun
came out at night, or if a
herd of horses were trotting in our
stomach.
They
also ask why
so many modern women take the
initiative rather than waiting for the male
to lay siege; whether it is
possible to love two people
and show it differently;
and whether to show
“openness” right away or hide
the feeling until the other
person gives positive
signals.
A teenager
said he felt connected with a
girl in his class and
wants to give her a DVD with
her favorite music, but his
grandfather says that
"you do not open your heart to
women lest you become a slave to their
whims." I recently read
something similar in an 11th
Century Arab poem. Would this mean that
in a millennium we have
learned nothing about the value of
our emotions?
Wooing
every day
Proving how much
we love someone is
not a one-day task. This was the consensus of several
messages; and also
in the comments at the gathering in the Alma
Mater library last Tuesday. We should beware of
whims and fear of
routine:
love is a feeling marked by
uncertainty, and not
knowing what will happen tomorrow, we
must nurture it more than one’s own family,
suggests psychiatrist
Oscar Ojeda.
"Have you heard
someone say:
‘There goes my ex-son,’ or
‘there goes my
ex-father?” is and example given by the Cuban
specialist who ensures that
romantic love is
the most dependent, and weakest
of human bonds.
“As
it is not based on
kinship, it cannot be
expected to be unconditional
and eternal,”
says Ojeda, who
compares the challenge of feeding
the link with the care
for a flower, "If you don’t water it, it
dies; but if
you water it too much...".
The method
is linked to our identity. At the gathering, an
adult man revealed his most
common trick: "I ignore
the woman I like, to make her feel
uncomfortable and make her
notice me." This is an effective technique
... in a closed circle
and with a person of low
self-esteem or lacking in
affection. Otherwise, your
"effort" to hide
your feelings –the physiological
blush that generates
her proximity, your voice and posture change,
the palpitations, dilated pupils–
will go
unnoticed as well as the incongruous
surly treatment,
almost immature,
you choose to give her.
Other
very old techniques
still work: giving flowers
and poems, sharing details
on key dates, subtle or
blatant compliments,
insistent stares, an
“accidental” touch, gentleness, helping and
relieving of burdens ...
A
young reader says that each
crush is different and
he prefers to rely on
the inspiration of the moment:
according to circumstances, he goes
slowly or breaks
preset limits. His resources
are creativity, empathy and
respect for the dignity of the
person he is trying to attract or retain.
At the other end
is
that friend who built
a set of actions
to render women
and used it strictly
with all his conquests
of the last decade. We
often made fun
of his apparent
naiveté, but
not his results which did not lack in logic:
for each woman his
actions seemed original and
even spontaneous. The
challenge was to
reinvent himself to impress the one he
cared for the most, years
after they met each other.
Other findings emerged from
this exchange. The first in
2015: the more our self-esteem,
the easier it is to prove that
we care for someone very much,
because no one will believe
in your love if you do not
accept yourself as you are.
The second is that learning
to bond within our family of
origin influences the way
we create bonds with other
people starting in adolescence. The skills thus acquired generate
patterns to retain
contacts or make an impression.
The
third
point is not to call love
the desire to possess someone,
to strip them of their
ideals or values.
Do not confuse love with
pragmatism, possession,
uncritical adoration
... If this is enough
for your day-to-day there is no objection,
but if the price is
renouncing happiness and
self-respect, you must look
deeper into your reasons
for accepting a relationship
with more anchors than
sails.
There
are toxic loves; but
if they are real they can be seen in
the hope of a reunion,
marked for a time when both persons
complete their spiritual
growth and find themselves
ready to rebuild the
relationship.
It
is also
an loving act to let go of
a hurtful past
and to trust that a new
opportunity may surprise you.
A reader sums it up:
"Love is not
betrayal; it is
trust, loyalty and
communication. I do not want
to remember the bad
experiences, I want to live this new one and
sincerely give all the love I have
to someone who deserves it because he
raised me with his arms
from the abyss into which
I was about to fall."
Another
experienced reader says:
"Love is one of the secrets
of life; and not even
the wisest, the most skilled
lovers, have managed
to discover all of it. It makes us different
from other species, but still
there has not been enough
research to unravel its mysteries.
Anyway, the important thing
is to live it intensely
... even when you cannot express
in words all its meaning
".

No quiero
