A CubaNews translation.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.

“You are in this court of law as a witness, which compels you to tell the truth lest you commit perjury. Do you understand what that means?” The young woman nodded, had a quick glance to the man sitting a few meters from her and started to describe the fight. When she’s asked to show the cut on her arm, she said she had injured herself with an object that he was trying to swipe out of her hand and had “broken by accident in the struggle”.

The prosecutor interrupted her: “But that’s not what you told the police. Are you aware of how serious your contradiction is?” She looked down and replied: “What I said then was not true. I did it because my mother told me to in order to get my daughter’s father into trouble, but we have already made up and I’m sure he didn’t mean to hurt me. Now I’m saying that I cut myself with a piece of glass”.

Putting on a brave face

One third of the world’s female population has been abused in their own home. Every country admits the occurrence of gender violence, but much of it is never reported to the authorities. While the statistics stress cases of extreme violence such as femicide, chronic abuse is spreading like a silent epidemic.

There are various reasons why a woman may decide either not to call the police or withdraw her accusations: economic dependence on her partner, fear of reprisal, she still “loves” her attacker and hopes he will change, a sense of shame that her neighbors or colleagues know, guilt feelings, lack of knowledge about where to go for help...

Your upbringing also plays a key role in this acquired helplessness, the term used by Aida Torralba, a psychologist from Holguín province, in an interview for the December issue of the bulletin Voces para el diálogo [Voices for dialogue].

If a woman’s parents were abusers or favored family unity over happiness, It's quite likely that she won’t see anything wrong with her husband’s overbearing ways, humiliations and beatings. Breaking that bond could take a long time and more than one relapse, and she needs to know that she’s not alone, holds Dr. Torralba.

That is why this issue must be approached from the viewpoint of the victim, who will balance the episodes of mistreatment against that other protective and even indulgent attitude shown by the abuser on a regular basis. Hard to believe as it may be, many women choose to keep the relationship based on “better the devil you know…”

Women can also be led into inaction by the lack of understanding on the part of those that put their cultural prejudices before anything else rather than enforce compliance with the law. Many of them are advised to go back home and “behave and don’t give cause to punishment”, and no sooner have they turned around, heartbroken, than they hear phrases like, “What may she have done?”, or “She should have chosen better”, if not the scathing comment “Never poke your nose between husband and wife”.

Such conducts make a woman all the more vulnerable, so she returns to their private hell hoping at least that no one will run off to tell her husband so that he won’t take it out on her later on the day.

A nip in the bud

The best remedy to domestic violence is more prevention among girls and boys alike. Empowering female teenagers and fostering in them an interest in delaying marriage in favor of individual development will help them be better prepared to identify possible situations of violence in the community and even within their own family.

This problem can also happen to gay and lesbian couples when they embrace the stereotyped roles of the dominant (male) and dominated (female) subjects.

Research done worldwide has it that abusers are found in any social stratum and there is no prevalence as to their age or race. The belief that it only happens among the socially excluded, alcoholics or criminals is just a myth that disguises the extent of the problem. It’s a well-known fact that the higher a woman’s cultural level the more likely it is that she will take charge of her own life and never put up with marital abuse. However, there are exceptions to every rule.

Dr. Lourdes Fernández, from the University of Havana’s Psychology School, told the aforesaid bulletin that gender violence is learned rather than a natural or a biological conditioned response, and the fact that it’s a “private” event doesn’t detract from its social nature.

Another ill-fated conception is that it’s impossible to discern a man’s abusive character: when a woman learns to give a critical look at a man’s past life she will find it easier to talk about this topic and see his reactions before violence takes root between them.

For instance, a man who was abused as a child will usually take that path as a means to “discipline” his partner and children, unless he is taught in time that there are other ways based on respect and equity. It’s never too late to lay down the rules of the game, and objectifying your partner cannot be justified.

In the case presented at the beginning, it was proved that the husband was indeed guilty of the injury inflicted on the young woman (19 years old) and that she had lied to the court on purpose to protect him, even at the expense of incriminating her own mother. As a result, the man was sentenced to prison and she will appear before the municipal prosecutor to be tried for perjury. What we’ll do as a society to stop the mistreatment before innocent babies are drawn into it remains to be defined.

A good time of the year, when many of us are rethinking our lives, for this necessary reflection... It only remains for us to speak out, point fingers, and teach our children that they can be in control of their life and that marriage and interpersonal relations, even with family, are not contracts of sale and purchase governed by the strongest. We must read them the first page of our Cuban Constitution and teach them that a professional education is a shield and a path toward self-fulfillment. It’s essential to tell ourselves every day that I CAN BE AND DO ANYTHING I SET OUT TO BE AND DO AND I LIVE MYSELF VERY MUCH.

Observador - December 27, 2014 / 8:56:41 CDT

The phrase “Never poke your nose between husband and wife” has an origin and a reason to exist. First and foremost, that the woman is usually the victim, albeit it’s been also known to happen to men, who are usually less prone to keep quiet about it for fear of the consequences for their image and self-esteem. Women often don’t hesitate to protest against and even attack anyone who, in good faith, tried to protect them in the first place, that’s the reason behind reactions like, “She probably asked for it” or “That’s her problem”. It’s a childish reaction to a multifaceted situation influenced by social and cultural factors which are much deeper than your culture or education and derive from the allocation of roles in a traditionally chauvinistic and sexist society where both genders, from an early age, learn and never question where their place is, to say nothing that those children are raised under the supervision and guidance of a generation already deformed as it is and bent on protracting such behaviors. Much of the blame for that lies entirely with women, because they fight tooth and nail for their role and the behavior that fits a homebody, as people tend to call someone considered to be a standard of good habits and proper conducts.

Stg del mundo - December 27, 2014 / 9:03:30 CDT

There are also a number of coercion-control mechanisms concealed by certain layers of manifest attempts at psychological, emotional and even economic blackmail, and the use of children as a bargaining chip to curry favor or harm the other party. Other things that we can consider as reasons for mistreatment are: financial problems, cohabitation, distance, infidelity, and forcing a woman into pregnancy even if she’s not willing or ready to give birth, which leads to having tolerated or unwanted offspring bound to be eventually mistreated as well. All these and many other factors—some of them so subtle that we can barely notice, let alone consider them, as such—contribute to these forms of mistreatment, which in many cases is not even physical of itself.

Yours is a much-needed report, Mileyda. Domestic violence is a true scourge hanging over both modern and traditional societies. There certainly are very few statistics and studies about this issue. It’s important to use this kind of articles and more specific action at community level to reduce violence against women. However, as I have said in previous comments for this same newspaper, I disagree with the personalized approach you make to it. This comment is in fact almost identical to one on the same topic that I sent to JR in 2013. True, there are acquired roles and there are abusive men, more so than we can imagine, but I wouldn’t just talk about violence against women. Men are very often the victims of psychological violence, which also ranks as a domestic problem of clinical proportions, except that it’s much less visible, and it sure concerns us all. We can’t talk about domestic violence while tacitly assuming that it goes only one way (from man to woman). It’s maybe pertinent to more traditional societies with strong patriarchal structures in place, and more complicated in present-day western societies, where violence travels in every direction. For example, a scale to measure the incidence of emotional violence against married women was created in 1989, but as it turned out, ten years later, in 1998, the same scale was applied to the study of emotional violence against men, and they found out that 90% of the surveyed men reported to have been emotionally mistreated by their partner. In 2010, the Supreme Court of the European Community went as far as to recommend the establishment of regulations for the rights of unmarried fathers, who were under heavy emotional stress as a result of the legal imbalance between genders. Moreover, in the years 2002, 2009 and 2010 the American Association of Psychology published articles in favor of a more homogeneous management of gender violence, with stress on the latter rather than on the former word. The articles refer to over 200 studies confirming that men and women alike exert violence (both physical and psychological) against their partners in equal numbers and for the same reasons and purposes, ranging from the intention to gain control or be rewarded to the promotion of one’s self-image at the expense of the partner’s. Psychological violence in particular includes verbal abuse, blackmail centered on the children, financial blackmail, social isolation, etc. The cases of serious physical attacks on women and physical violence by women acting in self-defense account for a very low number of domestic violence events. The articles warn in this regard that granting more importance to physical than to emotional violence or to the violence exerted by men, while ignoring the one exerted by women, can encourage rather than discourage domestic violence. In order to play it safe, I definitely declare myself to be against violence against women. No effort should be spared for or made conditional upon a solution to this problem. My point is that, at least in our western societies, we must stop looking at the traditional notion of gender violence as only incumbent on women, because that’s not true. Emotional violence is in many cases more effective and less noticeable, and a problem that affects men much more than anyone else. It’s because of cultural and legal barriers that still prevent us from recognizing a problem badly in need of a solution that we’re less familiar with this form of violence. There is overwhelming scientific evidence to prove this. Well-known scientists like Murray Strauss have made very valuable studies about it. Actually, approaching this issue as something that exclusively affects women reflects the sexist nature of its very defense, which labels women as a helpless being that needs to be protected and supervised by society at all times. Nevertheless, this view is at odds with much of the evidence produced in most western countries. Women are indeed beautiful flowers that deserve nothing but tenderness and acknowledgment, but they are first of all human beings capable of doing both good and bad things, exactly like men.

Sin rostro - December 27, 2014 / 16:32:16 CDT

WOOOOOW, Mileyda, your articles always take my breath away! I have a friend, a true friend in the broadest sense, who’s going through a terrible ordeal. She’s 57, and she got into a casual and extremely discreet affair with a 29-year-old man. She’s incredibly attractive and doesn’t look her age at all. He tried to convince her that the age gap was not important in the least, and they have been openly dating for one year and seven months, but it happens that she has become an obsession with him and his jealousy knows no limits. He verbally abuses her and has even beaten her on more than two occasions. She’s desperate because she can’t just split up; he stalks her and doesn’t allow her a moment’s peace, and after he hurts her he gives her all that about it’s beyond my control, you should bear with me because I was raised in a different way, etc.; then he holds her tight, always trying to kiss and make up. Ugh, what a guy; he makes scenes in front of everyone; she has a Sociology degree, but she feels trapped in a blind alley. Up until a week ago she was trying to conceal her face from her son after he gave her a black eye only because she begged him to leave, since theirs relationship was not working, and he told her he didn’t understand her words, and that she wanted to end because she was probably seeing someone else. How to help her, my question is. Obviously she’s afraid of him. Can it be that he really loves her and this is just how he shows it? I’m going to bring her this article and see if it does some good. I understand her, she feels very lonely and he exploited that, and now she’s lost... Help me help her! I know it sounds redundant, but the fact is that she’s very important to me and I’m worried about her lack of self-esteem… I’ll be awaiting your messages. Woow, Mileyda, as we say in Cuba, you put your finger on the spot!

David - December 28, 2014 / 13:59:33 CDT

Hi everyone! I’m a regular reader of Sexo Sentido, and I thank Dr. Mileyda for her insight and for guiding us through paths that many of us don’t even know exist. I think anyone who physically or psychologically abuses a woman must be properly punished, without ever breaking the law or taking it into one’s own hands. Many women suffer in silence, fearful of what people will say or what the man will do, but I believe that we all have an obligation to put an end to those unpleasant events and report them at once, aware of their possible consequences. Let’s help those whose voice falters in the crunch and their bodies won’t respond when they need to defend themselves, even from family, as it’s often the case. Let’s help all those women who wish to turn the page and get rid of the torturer they have at home.

Olgui - December 29, 2014 / 8:52:18 CDT

I think the media should talk more about where an abused spouse can go for help. And even if they are mostly women, some men are abused too. I insist, we need more information about what to do in those cases. Thank you.

Lissette - December 29, 2014 / 11:34:36 CDT

Another great article, like everything Mileyda usually writes. How many similar cases do we know, how many happen nearby, how many have we got involved in? This is unfortunately an everyday thing, at least around where I live. There are women in my neighborhood who take weekly beatings, and some of them are even knocked unconscious. For inexplicable reasons, however, they keep living with their attacker. Where can they go? Well, first of all the police, although I would turn to the baseball bat that I keep behind my front door. No one is entitled to beat someone else as if they were an object. Even if she’s afraid, even if she still loves the man and is naïve enough to believe that he will change, she must report any abuse, and better yet, defend herself, since striking back makes the blows you get hurt less.

José Gabriel - December 29, 2014 / 12:02:52 CDT

Man is the most elevated of creatures. Woman is the most sublime of ideals. God gave man a throne and woman an altar. A throne extols; an altar sanctifies. Man is the brain; woman is the heart. A brain manufactures light; a heart produces love. Light fertilizes; love revives. Man is strong through reason; woman is invincible through tears. Reason is convincing; tears are moving. Man is capable of any heroic deed, and woman of any ordeal. Heroism ennobles; martyrdom sublimates. Man has supremacy; woman has preference. Supremacy means strength; preference respects rights. Men are geniuses; women are angels. Genius is immeasurable; angels are indefinable. Man’s ambition is supreme glory; woman’s is extreme virtue. Glory makes everything that’s great; virtue makes everything that’s divine. Man is code; woman is gospel. A code corrects; gospel improves. Man thinks; woman dreams. Thinking is a larva in the head; dreaming is a halo on the forehead. Man is an ocean; woman is a lake. The ocean has the decorating pearl, and the lake the dazzling poetry. Man is a flying eagle; woman is a singing nightingale. Flying is dominating the space; singing is conquering the soul. Man is a temple, and woman its tabernacle. We take our hat off to a temple; we kneel before a tabernacle. In short: man is where the land ends, and woman where heaven begins.

Just to say HI and REPLY to comment No. 9 who signs as “Jose Gabriel”. Ha, ha, ha!!! The only thing missing at the end of your message were the words VICTOR HUGO, as my good friend the great and famous French writer who gave us Les Misérables was the one who wrote that. Anyway, esteemed reader, it’s good that you “quoted” him, but avoid the ubiquitous “plagiarism”, ha, ha, ha! Happy 2015!

MILI - December 29, 2014 / 13:32:23 CDT

A very good and interesting topic that I hope they write more about.

José Gabriel - December 29, 2014 / 13:47:30 CDT

Lack of knowledge about the law does not free us from criminal responsibility. Article 272.1, in Chapter VII of our Penal Code says on INJURIES, and I quote: “1.- Whoever causes grievous bodily harm to another person or seriously damages another person’s health will be imposed a sentence of two to five years in prison. 2.- Grievous bodily harm is understood as any action that puts the victim’s life in imminent danger, causes a deformity or a disability, or does any other anatomic, physiological or psychological damage. 3.- In order to adjust the sentence, the court will particularly take into account the degree to which the accused’s intention matches the nature and extent of the injuries thus caused. Article 274: Whoever causes bodily harm to another person or damages their health in such a way that they need medical treatment, even if the said harm neither put the victim’s life at risk nor caused any permanent damage as per articles 272 and 273, will be imposed a sentence of three months to one year in prison or a fine of one hundred to three hundred pesos, or both”. I agree with comment No. 8; no one has the right to physically or verbally abuse anyone. I don’t know how a man who calls himself that can mistreat a woman, even if sometimes she had it coming. I know women who act on impulse and launch a verbal or physical assault on the husband, but even then the best thing to do is to withdraw, take a breath, count to 100 and say the Lord’s Prayer three times. Violence breeds violence, and we seldom notice when that film starts, and much less how it will end.

José Gabriel - December 29, 2014 / 14:13:20 CDT

Look, Anibal “Revolución”, my real name is José Gabriel, without quotation marks. It seems you never take somebody’s advice. In previous articles, Mileyda suggested to avoid the frequent use of quotation marks like yours. With all due respect, allow me to prescribe you something very useful to people like you who go wrong and disrespect others: the pill LOCATINE, so you can put yourself in your rightful place. I’m not plagiarizing anyone by reproducing in this forum something that Victor Hugo wrote. Those who usually read my comments praise the way I contribute to it with excerpts from songs, phrases, poems and many other things I have written myself. This forum was designed by Mileyda to address various topics about sexuality and relationships, and all views are accepted as long as they are based on respect, love and friendship. So please, if you want to criticize, start by being self-critical. “Revolution” means to change anything that can be changed. Start by not using so many quotation marks.

Aníbal "Revolución" - December 29, 2014 / 14:18:24 CDT

Esteemed and nice journalist (and now Doctor, which I didn’t know you were): this thing about men who “abuse” women dates back to the Stone Age, and it goes both ways, like when a “woman” makes their partner’s life quite miserable. And I explain why. It would be very, very rare to see those “women” who attack and turn a man’s life into a living “hell” saying in a court of law that her husband, boyfriend, lover or suitor called for it. They always go and present themselves as “victims” when they get no end of beatings and mistreatment. I personally DISAGREE WITH and AM AGAINST any form of violence against either women or men, but there’s more to this than meets the eye. I have always believed that a man and a woman should know each other as much as possible and ask each other “a million questions” before they “START” a relationship. They must question everything, because that beautiful and romantic story we hear a thousand times, the one that goes, “It was ‘love’ at first sight” is good for the movies and the endless soap operas played in Cuban TV as well as in Mexico, Spain and other countries. What’s more, our beloved Apostle “Jose Marti” has a phrase that says, “Woman precedes Truth before Man”. What I mean by this, dear journalist “Mileyda” and Readers, is that before a man or a partner starts to tell you something or flirts with you, “you” know what he’s really up to. The rest depends on the way a woman was raised and assigned a role at home by the mother that brought her to the world or their closest relatives. The thing is that there is an “energy element” that we call “sex”, which is an “energy so very powerful” that it’s not easy, if at all possible, to keep at bay by either man or woman. And here’s one of the “main problems”: man has “stronger more pressing needs” than woman, and he just can’t keep a tight rein on them, unless he masturbates, whereas “women” can. But it’s the woman that starts a lot, if not most, of a couple’s problems and fights, and sometimes the man does. “Women”, esteemed journalist “Mileyda”, always are and operate in a “STATE OF CONFLICT”, and I know it because for many years have worked and dealt with women of all levels of education and culture, both in Cuba and abroad. And always, “always”, a woman has more inner “conflicts”. She knows from the very beginning of a conversation with a colleague, a classmate, etc., who she’s dealing with. Truth is, many “women” like to “PLAY WITH FIRE!” It’s been in their blood since time immemorial. Suffice it to mind the saying that “THERE’S ALWAYS A GREAT WOMAN” behind a man’s “success” in life. But if a man “fails”, behind him are his woman, in-laws, grandparents, friends, the whole neighborhood, hahaha. Nowadays, “VIOLENCE” against woman has spread as much as against man because we are leading a “very hard life” with too much “stress and social tension”. Women are often too “DEMANDING”, and they are always asking for this or that, to the point of using their “body and sex” to that end without giving a damn whether their partner can get it for them! So let’s stop all this B.S.! Both sexes are equally responsible and liable, so to speak. I have seen it in courts of law in Spain, the U.S., Mexico, Germany, etc. For instance, when a woman is taken care of and given every material comfort there is, and treated like a “Queen” for good measure, is when she ABUSES MORE AND CHEATS MORE ON THE MAN! So esteemed journalist “Mileyda”, how do you think a man feels when a woman destroys his life, soul and heart? And here’s an example I know of: a young woman received a well-appointed apartment with everything she could need, plus love, affection and understanding, and even so she through everything overboard! Thousands of dollars were wasted, which is easy to say, but it’s hard to work from dawn to dusk to save all that money and in five years a “disturbed, mentally unbalanced, abuser, cheating thief and, to top it all off, a whore”, spoils it all. The bottom line was, and is, that “some women don’t deserve to be loved with respect, dignity and consideration, since they are already carrying “a badly codified heritage and education” they learned at home, if ever they had something that deserved to be called “home”. I wish you, dear journalist “Mileyda”, a “Great New 2015” full of “JOY, HAPPINESS, HEALTH, PEACE, LOVE AND PROSPERITY”, as I do the readers of “Sexo Sentido”.

It seems that reader Anibal Revolución seldom visits our forum, or at least he has not for some time. Otherwise he would know that we are used to José Gabriel’s reflections, song lyrics and poems of all kinds, no plagiarism intended, since his qualities as a human being are above rude and derisive comments like Anibal’s, incapable of appreciating a well-intended opinion. José G, not all of us are as cultured as Anibal Revolución, so keep making our minds fresher with your very interesting comments, which will always be welcomed. Kisses.

Anar - December 29, 2014 / 15:37:10 CDT

There’s more to aggression than just blows. It’s also about derision or downplaying someone’s accomplishments. I have an example: Hector, a former classmate, got a University degree in Geology. He has traveled around Europe. He’s been married three times; his marriages don’t last long. He’s always been mean to or cheated on his wife of the moment for no reason at all, just for the hell of it. I met his last wife, a lady who was very close to Hector’s little daughter. Well, he would make fun of her in front of family and friends, saying things like, “There comes my child’s baby sitter”, until she had enough, left him and moved on. Hector is still living alone after losing someone who loved his daughter. I have another friend whose husband, a design technician, took it upon himself to draw the charts and diagrams she needed for her thesis work, saying all the time that she couldn’t deal with that and telling over and over again to drop out of the university and go back to study when their child had grown up a little. Their ups and downs led to divorce, and he deleted all her school assignments from the computer. In just one day she redid her thesis work, including drawings and all, and got top grades, and she told everyone that her ex had always called her a good-for-nothing. A young colleague told her, “That’s gender abuse”. Until then, no one had realized that fact. I had seen it all as a mere case of jealousy, because she was a successful university student. Psychological aggression is the worst kind, because it goes unnoticed. It’s good to bring these cases to light and take a look inside our own society so that we can learn about our family and teach our children to be better to keep them from falling into the hands of an abuser.

Lissette - December 29, 2014 / 16:17:05 CDT

JG, don’t get into a sweat about Anibal’s words. Writer whatever you want, who cares if you’re not the author. Anibal, you’re a super hyper mega-sexist person. Are we the troubled ones who function in conflict mode? Your message made me wonder whether I’m a real female human being or an android, because I have a quiet nature and loathe trouble. No matter how bad-mannered, offensive, etc., a woman could be; no man has the right to mistreat her. Nothing is as simple as a separation. If a woman is one of those disrespectful persons that make you feel like grabbing her by the throat, the best thing to do is turn around and leave it all behind. I’m amazed at someone your age having such lame views. One never gets to fully know another person, and you can ask 3,000 questions and receive 6,000 answers, but I will always answer what I feel. Men are no less capricious, Anibal, and they also use their body and cheat on their woman even if she’s a direct descendant of the Virgin Mary. Your example of the woman who threw “everything” overboard can turn around on you; there are plenty of examples, and there’s a reason for each of them. That woman who threw her comforts overboard had her reasons, because if ever I have been sure of anything is that material things can fill the spaces of a house but not those of a heart. You too have a happy 2015.

ale/82 - December 29, 2014 / 17:42:00 CDT

Much as no form of violence must be tolerated, it’s hard to come to terms with the fact that when the first signs appear the problem is already there. That’s when we must put a stop to things, and not necessarily to blows, as sometimes disrespectfulness hurts more than a slap in the face. José Gabriel, your words were beautiful and full of love and respect for us women, and no less sincere just because you didn’t write them. So thank you very much, and Happy New Year everybody, in the hope that many good things come your way.

A dónde acudir?
