On January 6, 2015, cartoonist René de la Nuez died in Havana at the age of 77. A prominent fighter for the Cuban revolution, he always defended his homeland with his brush and committed genius. He was a man of advanced ideas. From very early in life he devoted the great talent with which nature endowed him to the defense of the peoples, especially the disadvantaged and the poor. During the last years of his life his cartoons appeared systematically in newspaper POR ESTO!, edited in Mérida and printed in several places on the Yucatan Peninsula. This newspaper is one of the most prestigious, influential, and widely-circulated in Mexico and the western hemisphere. According to its editor, Don Mario Menéndez Rodríguez, the idea for this newspaper came to him in Cuba. "As a rule, the media are owned by large monopolies which use them to defend their interests. They use newspapers as instruments of pressure to gain privileges. The only way to publish information that would defend the people's interests was to have real journalists as owners and promoters of a newspaper that would work, not for economic profit, but for social usefulness." According to Menéndez, "one of the things he learned from the Cuban revolution was through popular participation in factories, in Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and study centers that gave him ideas on how to address the relationship between a newspaper with the problems of a community. The comments and complaints of the people are sources of information, research lines that we can follow. The idea is that those who best understand the problems of a community are the people in the community; therefore it is they who should expose those problems. And of course, we also allow them to criticize the line of the newspaper." In such a publication, it was logical that the revolutionary creative talent of Nuez felt "like a fish in water." Nuez’ cartoons played an outstanding role in supporting the struggle of the Cuban people against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, whose overthrow opened the way for the rise of the revolution in Nuez’ homeland. Nuez's identification with the social purposes of POR ESTO! was always organic. Nuez created graphic characters through which he expressed his educational, literary and political messages. Readers made them their own and will keep them alive beyond the physical disappearance of the author. El Loquito, Don Cizaño and Barbudo will remain forever in popular imaginary. The artist was active in Cuban periodicals such as the humorous weekly Zig-Zag and the official newspaper Granma. He also authored many books including his cartoon collections which have always enjoyed great popularity among fans of folkloric and political humor as well as among general readers. In 2006, de la Nuez received the Cuban National Arts Award in recognition of his more than 50 years of creative work and the transcendence –both artistic and social– of a work that occupies a privileged place in contemporary graphic humor. In 1966, he received the the Hernández Cárdenas award for graphic humor on regional customs and manners. In 1976, he was selected among the top 100 cartoonists in the world, according to a survey sponsored by the House of Humor and Satire of Gabrovo, Bulgaria. He also received the statuette awarded by the weekly Eulenspiegel of the former German Democratic Republic for his work “The Hen of the Golden Eggs” in 1983. The same year he received the Jean Effel award for Vencerá la vida [Life Shall Win]. Among the many honors he received are the 1960 Juan Gualberto Gómez National Award, the Lazaro Peña First Grade Medal and the Special Award for Cuban Culture in 1980. He was also honored with the Raúl Gómez García Medal in 1982, the Alejo Carpentier Medal in 1988, and the Gold Medal at the Graphic Humor Biennial in Castile, Spain, in 2007. The artist had numerous personal exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Cuba and in other countries. This morning in its posting of the sad news, Cuban newspaper Granma –of which René de la Nuez was founder and for many years editorial cartoonist– said that the artist had been born with the need to draw cartoons and came to be considered one of 100 most important cartoonists in the world. Yepe El 6 de enero de 2015, falleció en La Habana, a la edad de 77 años, el caricaturista René de la Nuez, destacado combatiente de la revolución cubana a la que siempre defendió, con su pincel y con la dedicación a su Patria de su genio. Hombre de ideas avanzadas, desde muy temprano en su vida entregó el enorme talento con que le dotó la naturaleza a la defensa de los pueblos, en especial los desvalidos y los humildes. Sus caricaturas aparecieron sistemáticamente, en los últimos años de su vida, en el periódico POR ESTO!, publicación que, editada en Mérida e impresa en otros puntos de la península de Yucatán, se incluye entre los medios de prensa de mayor circulación y de más prestigio e influencia en México y en el hemisferio occidental. Según su director, Don Mario Menéndez Rodríguez, la idea de este periódico le nació en Cuba. “Por regla general los medios son propiedad de grandes monopolios que los usan para la defensa de sus intereses. Utilizan los diarios como instrumento de presión para obtener privilegios. La única forma de poder publicar información que defienda los intereses populares era que verdaderos periodistas fueran los dueños e impulsores de un periódico, no para obtener beneficios económicos sino para lograr utilidad social”. Según Menéndez, “una de las cosas que él aprendió de la revolución cubana fue la participación popular en las fábricas, en los Comités de Defensa de la Revolución y los lugares de estudio, que le dieron ideas para abordar las relaciones del periódico con los problemas de la comunidad. De los comentarios y quejas de la gente obtenemos fuentes de información, líneas de investigación que luego seguimos. La idea es que los que mejor conocen los problemas de una comunidad son sus propios habitantes, por lo tanto son ellos los que deben exponer esos problemas. Y por supuesto también permitimos que critiquen la línea del periódico”. Era lógico que, en una publicación así, el talento revolucionario y creador de Nuez se sintiera “como pez en el agua”. Como los dibujos de Nuez desempeñaron un sobresaliente papel en apoyo a la lucha del pueblo cubano contra la tiranía de Fulgencio Batista, cuyo derrocamiento abrió paso a la llegada al poder de la revolución en su patria, su identificación con los propósitos sociales de POR ESTO! le resultaron siempre afines. Nuez fue creador de personajes gráficos a través de los cuales expresaba sus mensajes educativos, literarios y políticos. De varios de ellos se han apoderado los lectores y los mantendrán vigentes más allá de la desaparición física del autor. El Loquito, Don Cizaño y Barbudo, quedarán por siempre en el imaginario popular. El artista trabajó activamente en publicaciones periódicas como el semanario humorístico Zig-Zag y el diario oficial Granma. Cuenta, además con una vasta producción editorial que incluye libros con colecciones de sus caricaturas que siempre han disfrutado de gran avidez por los aficionados al humor gráfico político y costumbrista, así como entre los lectores en general. De la Nuez, recibió en 2006 el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas en Cuba, en reconocimiento por sus más de 50 años de quehacer creativo y a la trascendencia, tanto artística como social, de una obra que ocupa un lugar privilegiado en el humorismo gráfico contemporáneo. Por su obra gráfica, obtuvo el premio Hernández Cárdenas en costumbrismo en 1966 y fue seleccionado entre los 100 mejores caricaturistas del mundo, según encuesta promovida por la Casa del Humor y la Sátira de Gabrovo, Bulgaria, en 1976. También, recibió la estatuilla que otorgaba el semanario Eulenspiegel, de la antigua República Democrática Alemana, por la obra La Gallina de los huevos de oro, en 1983, y en ese mismo año el galardón Jean Effel por Vencerá la vida. Entre las numerosas distinciones que recibió sobresalen el Premio Nacional Juan Gualberto Gómez 1960, Orden Lázaro Peña de Primer Grado y la Distinción por la Cultura Cubana, 1980. Asimismo, fue laureado con la Distinción Raúl Gómez García, 1982, Medalla Alejo Carpentier, 1988, y la Medalla de Oro de la Bienal de Humor Gráfico en Castilla, España, 2007, ente otros. El artista realizó numerosas exposiciones personales y participó en muestras colectivas en Cuba y en diferentes países. Al publicar en la mañana de hoy la triste noticia, el periódico cubano GRANMA, del cual René de la Nuez fue fundador y durante varios años caricaturista editorial, que a éste le gustaba recordar que él nació con un bichito de hacer caricaturas y llegó a ser considerado uno de los cien caricaturistas más importantes del mundo.
