Wide-Spread Panic
Musings of a
Self-Hating Jew

63 years ago most Jews rejoiced over the birth of Israel. Some thought
it would become the place where a new vision of socialism with justice
and equality would arise. Clearly, not all Jews believed that – or in
those values.
Six plus decades later, the idea that Palestinians also deserve their
own nation with UN recognized boundaries has caused a panic reaction
from the Israeli government and its supporters throughout the world –
including the President of the United States as he opposed the idea at
the UN last month.
Why the panic? Look at comparative maps of Palestinian territory as
outlined by the UN in 1948, with what’s left of that land today. The
maps show Israel has stolen most of it — to build settlements for Jews
only.
Jews like me and my friends throughout the western world do not want to
migrate to the Promised Land (Zion now equals much of Palestinian
territory). We don’t want to live amidst Israeli settlers, many of them
self-righteous and very superior (chosen by God?) and oblivious to or
even proud of what they’ve done to Palestinians.
Decades of Israeli sponsored ethnic cleansing – forcing Palestinians
from their homes, villages and land — opened the way to the vast
Jewish-only housing developments on Palestinian land. Those who denounce
those illegal land grabs get denounced as “anti-Semites.”
Israel, once a land of egalitarian Kibbutzes has turned into an
aggressive and right wing nation run by religious Orthodoxy and desires
for ever more territory. Look at the map.
Friends abroad wonder how a right wing Israeli government and its US fan
club (the Israeli lobby, American Israel Political Action Committee and
its offshoots) has converted the US Congress into blind supporters and
the President into an obedient servant.
President Obama disgraced himself and his office when he bowed to the
patrons of Israel by threatening a veto of Palestinian statehood in the
UN Security Council. His world status shrank. The Arab world especially
witnessed the once all-powerful United States following Israeli demands
– a far cry from impartial leadership in a no-fabled peace process.
How can Obama expect anyone to believe he will promote a peace plan?
Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu continues to use those words as he
expands settlements into Palestinian territory. Obama’s plan seem akin
to continuing his obedience to the demands of a widely condemned (by the
UN) nation.
Indeed, in September Washington sent bunker-busting bombs to Israel.
Washington continues to insist on curbing Iran’s non-existent nuclear
threat while while ignoring Israel’s real potential to do immeasurable
damage to the region and the world.
After decades of Palestinian struggle, Obama has implied those people
are not yet ready for or do not merit their own state. Is he implying
they are inferior to Jews? Does it mean Washington recognizes the stolen
(occupied) territory as officially Israeli property? Does he justify the
second-class status of Palestinian citizens of Israel and the colonial
condition of those in the occupied territories? The implication is
clearly yes.
Thanks to his servility to Israel combined with events in the Arab world
Obama has presided over the end of US dominance of that region. The
kiss-ass Arabs (Mubarak and Ali of Tunisia) have gone into the garbage
pile of history. The King of Jordan and the oily Saudis and Kuwaitis can
no longer obey Washington’s dictates and hope to retain the tiniest
modicum of respect from their people.
Phrases etched into journalese like “peace process,” “Camp David” and
“Oslo Accords” will become forgotten or turned into sick jokes.
What Israel and apparently Washington fear is a state that looks like
Swiss cheese, pieces of land cut off by large Israeli settlements,
patrolled by Israeli soldiers and without independent access to its own
water, military establishment or even airports.
Does Israel have a right to exist? It exists. It has 200 nuclear
weapons. The question is: can the majority of people and nations force
Israel (and the US) to allow for the existence of Palestine.
To such a question the Israeli government and its fan club scream “anti
Semitism” a response to all criticism of Israel. This has earned me, and
thousands of others, the title of
“self hating Jew.” On the list
you’ll fnd Noam Chomsky and Woody Allen.
David Horowitz now makes lots of money with Freedom Center and
DISCOVERTHENETWORK.ORG, “dedicated to exposing the interconnected web of
left-wing activists, organizations, journalists, and financiers that
wage political warfare against the United States and her founding
ideals.” In 1970, Horowitz, then a super leftist in love with Huey
Newton of the Black Panthers and far more revolutionary than thou,
approached me at a benefit screening for the Black Panther legal defense
fund where I showed my FIDEL film.
“Is this all you’re going to do for the Panthers?” he asked, implying
that my limited commitment meant low moral status.
He has turned from ultra-leftism in the 1960s and early 1970s into an
ultra-rightist and zealous Zionist. Horowitz once scorned less than
ardent revolutionaries and non-vegetarians. He now excels at changing
left passion for right passion, but not for a sense of humor.
One trait that helped survive so many centuries of persecution was their
ability to laugh at themselves. Israeli expansionists of course can
still make sick jokes about occupying Palestinian territories, which
give Jews everywhere a bad name.

Reflexiones de un judío que se odia a sí mismo

Hace sesenta y tres años, la mayoría de los judíos se regocijaba por el
nacimiento de Israel. Algunos pensaban que se convertiría en el lugar
donde surgiría una nueva visión de socialismo con justicia e igualdad.
Claramente, no todos los judíos creían eso –o en esos valores.
Más de seis décadas después, la idea de que los palestinos también
merecen su propia nación con fronteras reconocidas por la ONU ha
provocado una reacción de pánico del gobierno israelí y de sus
patrocinadores en todo el mundo –incluyendo al presidente de Estados
Unidos que se opuso a la idea en la ONU el mes pasado.
¿Por qué el pánico? Vean los mapas del territorio palestino tal como fue
trazado por la ONU en 1948 y compárenlo con lo que queda actualmente de
la tierra. Los mapas muestran que Israel se ha robado la mayor parte –para
construir asentamientos solo para judíos.
Los judíos como mis amigos y yo en todo el mundo, no queremos emigrar a
la Tierra Prometida (Sión ahora es igual a gran parte del territorio
palestino). No queremos vivir entre colonos israelíes, muchos de ellos
farisaicos y muy superiores (¿escogidos por Dios?) y ajenos o incluso
orgullosos de lo que han hecho a los palestinos.
Décadas de limpieza étnica promovida por Israel –expulsando a los
palestinos de sus hogares, aldeas y tierras– abrieron el camino a las
grandes urbanizaciones solo para judíos en tierras palestinas. Los que
denuncian esos robos ilegales de tierra son tildados de “antisemitas”.
Israel, en otros tiempos una tierra de kibbutzes igualitarios, se ha
convertido en una nación agresiva y derechista dirigida por la ortodoxia
religiosa y deseosa de más territorios. Vean el mapa.
Los amigos en el extranjero se preguntan cómo un gobierno derechista
israelí y su club de admiradores en EE.UU. (el cabildo israelí, Comité
de Acción Política Israel Norteamericano y sus derivados) han convertido
al Congreso de EE.UU. en ciegos seguidores y al presidente en un
sirviente sumiso.
El presidente Obama se desacreditó y desacreditó su cargo cuando cedió
ante los patronos de Israel al amenazar con vetar en el Consejo de
Seguridad de la ONU el reconocimiento de Palestina como estado. Su
status global disminuyó. El mundo árabe en especial fue testigo de cómo
el otrora todopoderoso Estados Unidos cumplió las demandas de Israel –muy
lejos de la pretensión de liderazgo imparcial en un proceso de paz
verdadero.
¿Cómo puede esperar Obama que alguien crea que él promoverá un plan de
paz? El primer ministro israelí Netanyahu continua usando esas palabras
mientras expande los asentamientos en territorio palestino. El plan de
Obama parece equivaler a continuar su obediencia a las demandas de una
nación ampliamente condenada por la ONU.
Es más, en septiembre Washington envió a Israel bombas destructoras de
bunkers. Washington continúa insistiendo en detener la inexistente
amenaza nuclear de Irán mientras ignora el verdadero potencial de Israel
para hacer un daño inconmensurable a la región y al mundo.
Después de décadas de lucha palestina, Obama ha implicado que ese pueblo
no está listo para tener su propio estado o no lo merece. ¿Está
implicando él que es inferior a los judíos? ¿Significa que Washington
reconocerá el territorio robado (ocupado) como propiedad oficial israelí?
¿Justifica el status de segunda clase de los palestinos ciudadanos de
Israel y la condición colonial de los que se encuentran en territorios
ocupados? La implicación claramente es que sí.
Gracias a su servilismo ante Israel, combinado con sucesos en el mundo
árabe. Obama ha presidido el fin de la dominación de EE.UU. en la región.
Los árabes lameculos (Mubarak de Egipto y Alí de Túnez) han pasado al
basurero de la historia. El rey de Jordania y los aceitosos saudíes y
kuwaitíes ya no pueden obedecer los dictados de Washington y tienen la
esperanza de retener un mínimo de respeto de parte de sus propios
pueblos.
Frases de la retórica periodística como “proceso de paz”, “Camp David” y
“Acuerdos de Oslo” se olvidarán o se convertirán en chistes de mal
gusto.
Lo que Israel y aparentemente Washington temen es un estado que parece
un queso suizo, porciones de tierra cortadas por grandes asentamientos
israelíes patrullados por soldados israelíes y sin acceso independiente
a su propia agua, ejército o tan siquiera aeropuertos.
¿Tiene Israel el derecho a existir? Existe. Tiene 200 armas nucleares.
La pregunta es: ¿puede la mayoría de las naciones y de los pueblos
obligar a Israel (y a EE.UU.) a permitir la existencia de Palestina?
Ante tal pregunta, el gobierno israelí y su club de admiradores chillan
“antisemitismo”, una respuesta a toda crítica a Israel. Esto me ha
ganado a mí y a miles más el título de “judíos que se odian a sí mismos”.
En esa lista ustedes encontrarán a Noam Chomsky y a Woody Allen.

U n rasgo que ayudó a los judíos a sobrevivir a tantos siglos de
persecución fue su capacidad de reírse de sí mismos. Los expansionistas
de Israel, por supuesto, pueden seguir haciendo chistes de mal gusto
acerca de la ocupación de los territorios palestinos.
