SEPTEMBER 11th AND
THE FORGOTTEN TORTURES

Nearly
thirteen years after the
heinous events
of September 11, 2001,
U.S. President Barack
Obama officially
acknowledged that "some
were tortured" after those
terrorist attacks on New
York and
Washington DC.
Of course, this was known by
many millions of people
worldwide, including
Obama himself who, while
reviewing the report of the
Senate about the practice
of torture of suspected
terrorists by the CIA,
admitted to reporters on
Friday, August 1st, 2014,
that "even before taking
office, I knew well
that after September
11 we did some foolish
things."
He
euphemistically claimed
that "we crossed the line;
did wrong things that go against
our values ..
but we must understand these
actions in the context
of the attacks ...
The intelligence people
acted under extreme pressure
in 2001 and
later. Let us not be
too moralistic
at retrospectively
judging the hard work
of these people ...
who are true patriots."
The scandal
which forced the President of
the United States to
give these explanations
arose when, apparently by
mistake, a White House
official leaked a
document which revealed the
scale of torture by
the CIA
since the terrorist attacks
of September 11, 2001.
It is known that
the State Department prepared
a four-page summary with the
conclusions drawn from a
secret report of the Senate
on the practices followed by
the CIA in its
interrogations. The summary reached a
journalist of American news
agency AP to whom it
was mistakenly
sent by a White House
official.
Because they are
allegations of serious crimes
committed by the government
and ignored in the
corporate media, it would seem
that what could
be behind the naiveté of the
person who committed the mistake of
allowing the State Department’s secret report be known
is the fact that it explains how the information --in particular that
referring to the cruelty of tortures and
the existence of secret
prisons-- was expressly hidden from some members of
congress and the US covernment.
Such concealment could have
meant a violation
of the "gentlemen's agreement"
governing the bipartisan
dictatorship which has ruled the
US for a long time.
As
has transpired, the preamble
of the summary that is
in the center of the scandal
expresses: "This report
tells a story that
no American will be proud of.”
The report
shows that after
the September 11
attacks, the CIA's
interrogation practices on suspected members of
Al Qaeda
were even more atrocious than
thought and, despite this,
the CIA
failed to obtain crucial data
which could have saved lives.
According to what
has been learned by the
media from the State Department's
report, among these
techniques were slapping,
humiliation, exposure to cold,
sleep deprivation and “waterboarding”.
The report "leaves no
doubt that the methods used
to get information from
suspected terrorists caused
deep pain" and that the damage
caused "exceeded any
potential benefit."
Manipulated through the media
control exerted by the same
powers that are responsible for
US wars, a
relatively large number of
Americans consider that the
Abu Ghraib
torturers and the punishers
of half a thousand prisoners
in the illegal American
military base at Guantanamo,
Cuba, were rogue elements in
an army in which
these evils are
exceptional.
Unfortunately,
nothing is further from the
truth. And it is
shockingly clear that,
in the United States,
just as the events of September 11, 2001
are still to be investigated,
many gruesome aspects of the
"war on terror" --which
the US declared against its own people
and the world after
that monstrous crime-- remain
in the dark.
13
years after that tragic event, it is
regrettable to watch those in the United
States who pursue their search for truth
risk being charged,
under the "patriotic laws,"
of participating in
conspiracies or treason. At least that is what they fear.
The statement
by the President of the
United States that he was not unaware of
the horrors that followed
the events of September
11, 2011 (he called
them “mistakes”) without even
condemning them for 13 years, would
seem to justify their fears.

EL
11 DE SEPTIEMBRE Y LAS TORTURAS OLVIDADAS

Casi trece años después de ocurridos los aborrecibles hechos del 11 de
septiembre de 2001, el Presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama,
reconoció que oficiales estadounidenses “torturaron a alguna gente”
luego de esos atentados terroristas en Nueva York y Washington D.C.
Claro que esto lo sabían muchos millones de personas en todo el mundo,
incluyendo el propio Obama quien admitió a la prensa el viernes primero
de agosto de 2014, al opinar sobre el informe del Senado acerca de la
práctica de torturas a presuntos terroristas por parte de la CIA, que
“incluso antes de asumir la presidencia, sabía perfectamente que después
del once de septiembre hicimos cosas desatinadas”.
Alegó eufemísticamente que “cruzamos la línea, hicimos cosas erradas que
van contra nuestros valores…, pero comprendamos estas acciones en el
contexto de los atentados…, la gente de la inteligencia actuó bajo una
extrema presión en el 2001 y también posteriormente. No seamos demasiado
moralizadores al juzgar retrospectivamente el duro trabajo que estas
personas… que son verdaderos patriotas”.
El escándalo que obligó al Presidente de los Estados Unidos a dar estas
explicaciones surgió cuando, aparentemente por error, un funcionario de
la Casa Blanca, filtró un documento que revela la escala de las torturas
practicadas por la CIA desde los atentados terroristas del 11 de
septiembre de 2001.
Se conoce que el Departamento de Estado preparó un sumario de cuatro
páginas con las conclusiones que sacó de un informe secreto del Senado
sobre las prácticas aplicadas por la CIA en sus interrogatorios, y que
éste llegó a un periodista de la agencia de noticias estadounidense AP a
quien le fue equivocadamente enviado por un funcionario de la Casa
Blanca.
Diríase que, más que por tratarse de denuncias de graves delitos
cometidos por el gobierno e ignorados en los medios corporativos de
prensa, lo que pudiera estar detrás de la ingenuidad de quien cometió el
error de permitir que se conociera el informe secreto del Departamento
de Estado es que en él se explica cómo se ocultó intencionalmente la
información, en especial la referida a la crueldad de las torturas y a
la existencia de cárceles secretas, a algunos miembros del Congreso y
del Gobierno de EEUU.
Y este ocultamiento, pudiera haber significado una violación del “pacto
de caballeros” que rige la dictadura bipartidista que gobierna Estados
Unidos hace mucho tiempo.
Según ha trascendido, el preámbulo del sumario que está en el centro de
este escándalo expresa: “Este informe cuenta una historia de la que
ningún estadounidense se siente orgulloso”.
Del informe se desprende que después de los ataques del 9/11 las
prácticas de interrogatorios de la CIA a los presuntos miembros de Al
Qaeda eran incluso más atroces de lo que se pensaba y, a pesar de ello,
por medio de estas torturas la CIA no logró obtener datos cruciales que
sirvieran para salvar vidas.
Según lo que se ha conocido por la prensa del reporte que elaboró el
Departamento de Estado, entre esas técnicas figuraban bofetadas,
humillaciones, exposición al frío, privación del sueño y ahogamiento en
agua. El reporte “no deja lugar a dudas de que los métodos usados para
sacar la información de algunos supuestos terroristas causaron profundo
dolor” y que el daño causado “superó cualquier beneficio potencial”.
Manipulado por el control de los medios de información que ejercen las
mismas fuerzas que son responsables de las guerras estadounidenses, un
número relativamente alto de norteamericanos considera que los
torturadores de Abu Graib y los verdugos de medio millar de prisioneros
en la ilegal base militar de Estados Unidos en Guantánamo, Cuba, son
ovejas negras en un ejército en el que esos males son excepcionales.
Desgraciadamente, nada está más lejos de la verdad que esto. Y es que es
escandalosamente evidente que, así como los propios acontecimientos del
11 de septiembre de 2001 en Estados Unidos están aún por investigar,
siguen envueltas en nebulosas muchos aspectos horripilantes de la
“guerra contra el terrorismo” que Estados Unidos declaró contra su
propio pueblo y el mundo tras aquel monstruoso crimen.
A 13 años del trágico acontecimiento, es lamentable observar que quienes
en Estados Unidos insisten en buscar verdades corren el riesgo de ser
acusados, a tenor de las “leyes patrióticas”, de participar en teorías
conspirativas o de traidores, o al menos eso temen. La afirmación por el
propio presidente de Estados Unidos de que no ignoraba los horrores que
siguieron a los hechos del 11 de septiembre de 2011(que calificó de
equivocaciones) sin siquiera censurarlos durante 13 años, parece
justificar esos temores.
