MACABRE CIRCUS IN THE GAZA STRIP

When the New York Times published documented information with photos that in  Sderot --an Israeli town strongly affected by the bombing of the Zionist government targeting the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip-- the Israeli inhabitants of the town were invited to watch the spectacle of the bombings which are causing hundreds of civilian deaths and thousands of wounded, the event caused shock.

The information and photos supplied by Danish reporter Allan Sorensen on his Twitter account, show how, as if it were a theater or a circus, the spectators --sitting comfortably in chairs and sofas dragged to hilltops near the border-- with binoculars, and eating popcorn-- talk cheerfully as they watch the horror. They celebrate and encourage their country'a air force while it bombs Gaza. When a bomb reaches its goal, the spectators burst into cheers and applause.

"The hill has been transformed into something that resembles the first row of a theater of war. It offers a direct view of a densely-populated area in the Gaza Strip," says Sorensen.

Sorensen’s Tweet "Sderot Cinema " caused enormous indignation throughout the social networks, where it was shared by more than 10,000 users in a few hours.

The New York Times reported that the images were taken almost simultaneously with the Israeli attack that killed at least eight Palestinians when they were watching  the match between Argentina and Holland in the Football World Cup, Brazil 2014 on television.

According to the newspaper, Sorensen believes that the image does not show "anything new" since similar scenes of Israeli citizens watching the destruction in Gaza had been seen during a previous offensive in 2009.

The veteran Danish journalist tried to soften the impact of his story by telling the NYT that he had once before witnessed celebrations by Palestinians on news of bombings where Israelis had died. Sorensen attributed the phenomenon to the fact that, in a war, the civilians and military of both sides suffer from a process of dehumanization regarding the adversary.

But, just as an unfair war as this which the Israeli government unleashed against the legitimate Palestinian aspiration to be a free and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital awakens solidarity with those unjustly attacked, it must be noted how important segments of the best among the noble Jewish people also rise up against the crime.

The government of Israel today faces a growing campaign lead by the most notable Jewish artists, scientists and intellectuals living abroad, brought together into the organization Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). This organization, which already has about 100, online responses to its calls for action. JVP supports nonviolent initiatives and calls for the suspension of U.S. military assistance until Israel ends its occupation of Palestine.

The Advisory Board of JVP includes some outstanding Jewish personalities residing in the United States and other countries. They are proud of their national origin, but are strongly critical of Israel’s foreign policy and the support it receives from the U.S. Among the members of the Advisory Board are laureate intellectual Noam Chomsky, playwrights Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize) and Eve Ensler, journalist and author Naomi Klein, actor Wallace Shawn, the President of the Center for Constitutional Rights Michael Ratner, and several rabbis as well as the great historian Howard Zinn until his death in 2010.

The Israeli government claims that the slaughter being carried out in Gaza against the Palestinian people is directed only against the Hamas Movement. They make Hamas responsible for the tenacity of the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank against the Zionist aggression war that has the United States oligarchy as its main ally and supporter.

But it is well-known that over 80% of the casualties are civilians, including children. There has been extensive damage to the civilian homes and institutions of a population of 1.8 million crammed in 360 square kilometers. This is a population with its most elementary rights restricted.

In the first two weeks of Israeli aggression, their military's air force launched more than 2000 tons of explosives in as many raids. The Palestinian death toll was over 600 and the hospitals admitted more than 1500 injured, many in critical condition. They registered 100,000 displaced persons and caused extensive damage to houses, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers for patients, schools and public service buildings.

All a macabre spectacle of genocidal war!

CIRCO MACABRO EN LA FRANJA DE GAZA

Cuando el periódico New York Times publicó la información documentada con fotografías de que, en Sderot, localidad israelí fuertemente afectada por los bombardeos del gobierno sionista contra la población palestina en la Franja de Gaza, los habitantes israelíes de la localidad eran convocados a observar el espectáculo de unos bombardeos que están causando centenares de muertes de civiles y miles de heridos, el hecho causó consternación.

La información y las fotos, suministradas por el reportero danés Allan Sorensen en su cuenta de Twitter, muestran como, cual si fuera en una sala de cine, o en un circo, los espectadores, sentados cómodamente en sillas de teatro o asientos de camping y sofás arrastrados hasta la cima de las colinas cercanas a la frontera, con binoculares y saboreando rositas de maíz, conversan alegremente mientras observan aquel horror. Celebran y animan a la fuerza aérea de su país mientras ésta bombardea Gaza. Cuando una bomba llega a su objetivo, los espectadores estallan en gritos de alegría y aplausos.

“La colina se ha transformado en algo que se asemeja a la primera fila de un teatro de la guerra. Ofrece una vista directa a un área densamente poblada de la Franja de Gaza”, cuenta Sorensen.

El tuit “Cine Sderot” de Sorensen causó enorme indignación en las redes sociales, en las que fue compartido por más de 10.000 usuarios en pocas horas.

El New York Times informó que las imágenes fueron tomadas casi simultáneamente con el ataque israelí que mató al menos ocho palestinos cuando veían en televisión el partido entre Argentina y Holanda del Mundial de balompié de Brasil 2014.

Según el diario, Sorensen considera que la imagen no muestra “nada nuevo” puesto que escenas similares de ciudadanos israelíes observando la destrucción en Gaza ya se habían visto en una anterior ofensiva en 2009.

El veterano periodista danés intentó suavizar el impacto de su relato al referir al NYT que él en una ocasión anterior fue testigo de festejos por parte de palestinos ante noticias de bombardeos en los que fallecieron israelíes. Sorensen atribuyó el fenómeno a que, en una guerra, civiles y militares de ambos bandos sufren un fenómeno de deshumanización respecto al adversario.

Pero así como una guerra injusta como la que el gobierno de Israel libra contra la legítima aspiración palestina de ser un Estado libre y soberano con Jerusalén Oriental como su capital despierta la solidaridad con los injustamente agredidos, es preciso notar cómo importantes segmentos de lo mejor del noble pueblo judío también se levantan contra el crimen.

El gobierno de Israel enfrenta hoy una creciente campaña que encabezan los más notables artistas, científicos e intelectuales judíos radicados en el exterior, integrados en la organización Voces Judías por la Paz (VJP), que ya cuenta con unos 100 mil miembros, que apoya iniciativas no violentas y propugna la suspensión de la asistencia militar estadunidense hasta que Israel anule su ocupación de Palestina.

En la Junta de Asesores de VJP figuran algunas destacadas personalidades judías residentes en Estados Unidos y otros países que, orgullos de su origen nacional, son al mismo tiempo críticos prominentes de la política exterior de Israel y del apoyo que recibe de Estados Unidos. Ente ellos se cuentan el laureado intelectual Noam Chomsky, los dramaturgos Tony Kushner (premio Pulitzer) y Eve Ensler, la periodista y escritora Noami Klein, el actor Wallace Shawn, el presidente del Centro de Derechos Constitucionales Michael Ratner, y varios rabinos entre los cuales destacó hasta su fallecimiento en 2010 el genial historiador Howard Zinn.

El gobierno israelí alega que la masacre que está llevando a cabo en la Franja de Gaza contra el pueblo palestino está dirigida sólo contra el Movimiento Hamas, al que el responsabiliza por la tenacidad de la resistencia palestina en la Franja de Gaza y Cisjordania frente a la guerra de agresión sionista, que cuenta con la oligarquía de Estados Unidos como su principal aliado y sostén.

Pero se conoce que más del 80% de los muertos y heridos son civiles, incluidos niños, y cuantiosos los daños a viviendas e instituciones civiles de una población de un millón ochocientos mil habitantes aglomerados en 360 kilómetros cuadrados, con sus derechos más elementales restringidos.
