"Los años no pasan en vano para
nadie, (y Castro) era un hombre grandote cuando yo lo conocí de
joven, medio gigantesco, parecía una pared", evocó "Pepe" Mujica, un
exguerrillero de 79 años que defendió en la década del 60 y 70 la
lucha armada.
"Ahora es un viejito al que se le cayeron los años encima. Sigue
estando brillante de acá", dice, señalando su cabeza.
"No es un anciano lelo (tonto), de ninguna manera. Tiene la
ancianidad en el cuerpo pero tiene eso que no es general entre los
hombres y que han tenido algunos viejos en la historia humana. No
conocí a Churchill pero me imagino que a los 90 años sería un viejo
que estaría decrépito y todo pero por lo que he podido leer estaba
brillante. Otros no tienen la suerte de tener eso", comentó.
Como presidente, Mujica visitó a Castro en Cuba en julio de 2013 y
en enero de 2014, en encuentros que calificó entonces de "emotivos".
Fidel "está actualizado del mundo entero, le leen de mañana y de
noche un boletín de las noticias fundamentales de lo que pasa en el
mundo, tiene un conocimiento y percepción global del mundo que
asusta", aseguró.
Mujica señaló este miércoles que durante su encuentro en mayo de
este año con el mandatario estadounidense Barack Obama, éste le
planteó "el deseo manifiesto de tratar de mejorar la relación con
Cuba".
"Me transmitió la preocupación por alguien que está preso en Cuba,
de origen norteamericano", dijo además Mujica, en referencia al
estadounidense Alan Gross, condenado por espionaje en La Habana.

Mujica: Fidel Castro is an “dear old man”
who continues to be “brilliant”
The
Cuban leader Fidel Castro is “a dear old man that the years suddenly
seem to have caught up with” but still has a “brilliant” mind, Uruguayan
president José Mujica said Wednesday in an interview with AFP.

time fly! When I was young I met [Castro] and he was a big, almost huge,
man who looked like a wall”, former guerrilla and armed struggle

“Now he’s a
dear old man that the years suddenly seem to have caught up with. But
he’s still brilliant up here”, he says, tapping his head.
“He’s not a goofy old man, not at all. His body has got old age, but
he’s got something that is uncommon among men and exclusive to very few
old folks in human history. I never met Churchill, and I would have
thought that at 90 he would have been a decrepit old man, but according
to what I have read about him he was brilliant. Others are not that
lucky”, he added.
As President, Mujica visited Cuba in July 2013 and January 2014 and had
meetings with Castro that he then described as “emotional”.
Fidel “keeps up with world events; every morning and evening they read
to him a bulletin of the main news about what's going on everywhere. He
has an amazing knowledge and global perception of the world”, he
assured.
Mujica remarked that when he met with President Barack Obama in May this
year, the U.S. leader stated “his clear wish to try and improve
relations with Cuba”.
“He expressed his concerns about someone of American origin who is
serving prison time in Cuba”, Mujica pointed out, in reference to Alan
Gross, an American convicted of espionage in Havana.
