Math exam for Havana university entrance to be repeated

Information received from different sources confirmed that its contents was leaked to and known by several senior high school students in Havana.

May 20, 2014

On May 6, the first exam for admission to Higher Education –in this case Mathematics– was held nationwide for all kinds of available courses and degrees.

Shortly afterwards it was learned through various channels that its contents had been leaked to, and the questions were known by, several senior high school students in the Cuban capital city.

An investigation was launched that same day in the afternoon with the purpose of finding evidence of such allegations and taking action in keeping with the ethical and legal standards and principles governing Higher Education enrolment in Cuba.

In light of the facts, the History and Spanish tests to be applied in Havana, distributed as planned just a few hours before they were to be taken, were also modified.

Several days later it was established that unscrupulous people had stolen the exam despite the measures taken and that, in the case of Havana, the Math test had been passed around a group of students, who had gotten hold of it in different ways, including payment. So far, three pre-university school professors are involved in the theft.

Given the relevance of this process, its characteristic transparency and the fair consideration of the qualities and preparation of all University applicants, the Education authorities have decided to overturn the initial results and repeat the Math test for all candidates to Higher Education institutions in the province of Havana on Monday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m. on the same premises where they took the first exam.

The investigation continues with a view to taking the relevant legal measures with those involved in such a reprehensible act.

Activities of this nature, so detrimental to the prestige of the Cuban education system that is defended with full integrity by the vast majority of our teachers, professors, students and citizens, will not go unpunished.
