Blessed Mother

May brings back the desire to remember the greatest feats of mothers: their premature luck as fortunetellers guessing whether you were a boy or a girl; their incredible ability to say how pretty you were at birth, while the nurse cleaned the amniotic fluid and said in amazement: "Mom, cute?" ... Or that time when' with a hurricane's force' she turned pharmacies inside out in search of that medicine to bring down that unbearable fever.

Mom takes your arm and teaches you that you cannot allow yourself to get anywhere if not by your own triumphs. She delicately shows you that you can achieve anything if you put in the right effort.

For her the word "never" does not exist in dictionaries. You are forgiven if you cover the windows of the house and the calendar with her name and the drawings of the class; if one day you and your friends decide to play house and put on her clothes and high heels; if you spend two hours at the phone while she awaits that important call.

Mom teaches you not to be tolerant of injustice; to lift up your head when you fall. She shows you where the true friends are without trying to pick them out for you. She knows how it is possible to do double shifts, how to love Dad beyond their differences; how to withstand years of separation when he is away on a mission outside the country.

She can make you blush in front of a perfect stranger if she starts commenting on your successes, and making you listen to the end, even if you're pinching her back, when you've told her a hundred times how it affects your mood.

She is able to face the recklessness of a driver to teach you "what to do the day she's not around, in order to change society." She calmly explains why those kids break the phones, damage the city, and shout on the bus; and what you should do when you have your own kids for them to try to staighten up the world.

Needless to mention' her qualifications as economist, philosopher and linguist. I've never figured out how Mom manages to get her accounting right. She tells you that running a country means to allocate and give everyone their little bit. In her realm, that is an incorruptible law, although most of the time she camouflages your bit so it doesn´t look bigger than anybody else's.

The healing powers of a mother always arrive at the right time with the right word, ideal to weather the storm. That is why her voice on the phone makes all problems fade away.

Mother tells you that you need not raise your voice or hold grudges. She stresses the importance of understanding friends; the importance of teachers ... For her, there is only one good son or daughter, and that son or daughter is you.

She excels in the art of handling questions about "her" or "him", whatever the case, leaving no space for you to think that she is being nosy. Mom lets you decide, lets you think, lets you make mistakes ...

And she does so because Grandma once taught her; she does so because her mother did it three times better, although by that time you´ll think it is incredible. She tries so hard and gives so much that she hardly leaves any room for herself, and hides to cry when life shows her that she was wrong. She cries if she overdoes it with the scolding, if you did something wrong and she feels it was her fault.

There is a mystery in celebrating Mother's Day every second Sunday in May. A mystery wrapped in gift paper that reaches them all plus aunts and grandmothers ... That day, the tables are covered with flowers and the atmosphere dresses up to the occasion to allow the children, and the children's children, to have a really happy time.

But those twenty-four hours are not –nor are all hours of every Sunday of the year– enough to praise the qualities of a mother, the warm feeling that invades you each morning with your cup of coffee and on the star-studded nights when her silent kiss on the forehead closes your day.

Madre
