She became famous at supersonic speed, not so much for having run on the Republican ticket in 2008 as the vice presidential candidate alongside John McCain –whom she made look almost like a liberal– but because her statements would go so often from supine ignorance to hard-core rightism that the old proverb “Knaves and fools divide the world” would suit her just fine...
And since former Alaska governor Mrs. Sarah Palin has remained at the head of her country’s most reactionary and belligerent currents, now and then she goes back to her old ways, especially when she gives speeches to the National Rifle Association (NRA), as in the case we are dealing with here.
Speaking last weekend at the NRA’s annual convention at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Palin openly told to the thousands of fans attending the rally, called Stand and Fight: “Waterboarding is how we’d baptize terrorists if I were in charge”.
A literal translation or interpretation of her words: if she were the US president, she would brutally torture her enemies.
Her explicit intention was to lash out at the Obama Administration for being soft and failing to “put the fear of God in our enemies”.
She made no bones about her ultra-conservative views when she warned the pro-gun lobby against the “intolerant, anti-freedom leftist liberal” democrats, putting it as follows: “If you control oil, you control an economy. If you control money, you control commerce. But if you control arms, you control the people, and that is what they’re trying to do”. And then she put the finishing touch calling gun-free school zones “stupid on steroids”.
To cap it all off, she defended her insane spiel in her Facebook page so that her words would not be gone with the wind, but a through-and-through declaration of faith, duly signed, sealed and delivered.
What’s scary is that Sarah Palin still has followers, perhaps less so than when she was trying to become the White House’s second-in-command, because both she and what she represents are a clear and present danger in the increasingly violent society of a nation convinced that it’s the chosen one to rebuild the world in its own image…
Could this be such an image? On the last day of April, a four-year-old boy shot and killed his one-year-old brother in Kansas. It was an “accident”, journalist Abby Zimet said on Common Dreams, quoting the police, and went on to say: “There are about 20,000 such ‘accidents’ a year in this country; the blog Kid Shootings tracks them all”.
KWCH 12 in Wichita, the city of Kansas where the tragedy took place, reported that the boys where playing in the bedroom with their three-year-old sister when the eldest open the drawer of a bedside table… “There was a loaded gun in that drawer," said police lieutenant Todd Odile.
An accident? That every year Keystone Sporting Arms sells an estimated 80,000 pink and blue Crickett and Chipmunk rifles, “the first ones that shoot small real bullets that can kill small real children”?...
An accident? That Sarah Palin defends the “right” to be armed? That the “leaders” promote warfare and the violent seizure of other people’s wealth, territories and sovereignty?...
An accident? That photographer An-Sofie Kesteleyn, who travelled across the United States searching for images, published in the British daily The Guardian a gallery of pictures that speak for themselves and give an accusing look to those responsible for the American tragedy in which parents, society and the system pass their fear, paranoia and habits on to a small armed force?...
Premeditation is all too obvious in a society that can easily rate as seriously ill.

Para darle susto al miedo

Se hizo famosa a velocidad supersónica. No tanto porque fuera aspirante
a la vicepresidencia de Estados Unidos por el Partido Republicano,
acompañando a John McCain en 2008 —y lo hizo aparecer casi como un
liberal—, sino porque sus declaraciones eran de tal talante desde la
ignorancia supina y el pensamiento más de ultraderecha, que podría
aplicársele ese proverbio de «a tontos y a locos no les tengan en pocos…».
Y como la señora Sarah Palin, que fue también gobernadora de Alaska, se
ha mantenido como una de las figuras líderes del pensamiento más
retrógrado y belicoso de Estados Unidos, a cada rato vuelve a las
andadas, sobre todo en sus discursos ante la Asociación Nacional del
Rifle (NRA), como en esta ocasión que nos ocupa.
El pasado fin de semana, en la convención anual de la NRA en
Indianápolis, la Palin fue una de las oradoras principales y ante miles
de fanáticos de los reunidos en un mitin en el Lucas Oil Stadium que
llamaron «Levántate y lucha», dijo sin tapujos: «Si yo estuviera a cargo
(nuestros enemigos) sabrían que el waterboarding es como
bautizaríamos a los terroristas».
Traducción o interpretación exacta de estas palabras: si fuera la
Presidenta torturaría brutalmente a los enemigos.
Su intención explícita fue criticar por blando al ejecutivo de Barack
Obama, porque ha fallado en poner «el miedo a Dios en nuestros enemigos».
El desbarre fue total para imponer sus criterios ultraconservadores
cuando advirtió al lobby a favor de las armas contra los demócratas «intolerantes
y antilibertarios liberales de izquierda». Y lo expresó así: «Si usted
controla el petróleo, usted controla la economía. Si usted controla el
dinero, usted controla el comercio»… «Pero si usted controla las armas,
usted controla a la gente, y esto es lo que ellos están tratando de
hacer». Y el punto final lo puso cuando llamó a las zonas escolares
libres de armas como «estupidez en esteroides».
Para colmo, ese discurso insano lo defendió en su página en Facebook
para que no fueran palabras al viento, sino una declaración de fe a
ultranza, firmada y confirmada.
Lo que asusta es que Sarah Palin sigue teniendo seguidores, quizás menos
que cuando aspiró a ser la segunda de la Casa Blanca, pero ella y lo que
representa son un peligro latente en la sociedad cada vez más violenta
en una nación convencida de que es la escogida para hacer el mundo a su
imagen y semejanza…
¿Y será esta la imagen y la semejanza? El último día de abril, un niño
de cuatro años mató a su hermanito de un año en Kansas. Fue un «accidente»,
decía más como lamento que con sorna el periodista Abby Zimet en Common
Dreams, citando a la policía, y agregaba: «Hay unos 20 000 de estos
“accidentes” al año en este país; el blog Kid Shootings los rastrea».

reportó que los niños y una hermanita de tres años jugaban en el
dormitorio, el de cuatro años abrió la gaveta de una mesita de noche…
«En esa gaveta estaba un revólver cargado», aseguró el teniente de
policía Todd Odile.
¿Accidente?, cuando Keystone Sporting Arms vende cada año un estimado de
80 000 rifles rosados y azules (Crickett y Chipmunk, son sus marcas),
los «primeros fusiles que disparan pequeñas balas de verdad que matan a
pequeños niños de verdad»…
¿Accidente?, cuando Sarah Palin defiende el «derecho» a estar armados.
Cuando los «líderes» promueven las guerras, la toma violenta de riquezas,
territorios y soberanías de otros…
¿Accidente?, cuando la fotógrafa An-Sofie Kesteleyn, que viajó por
Estados Unidos en busca de imágenes, publicó en el diario británico The
Guardian una galería de retratos que hablan y marcan responsabilidades
en esa tragedia americana, en la que los padres, la sociedad y el
sistema transmiten a un pequeño ejército armado sus miedos, paranoias y
hábitos…
La premeditación es obvia en una sociedad que puede calificarse de
gravemente enferma.
