British actor Bob Hoskins, famous for his role as detective Eddie Vailant in the film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” died of pneumonia at age 71, his family said Wednesday.

"He died peacefully in the hospital surrounded by his family," reported a statement signed by his widow and four children, and released by his agent Clair Dobbs.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob," his family said in a statement signed by his wife Linda, and their children Alex, Sarah, Rose and Jack, who said the actor died "peacefully and surrounded by his family."

Hoskins said he became an actor "by accident" and throughout his career was the antithesis of the classic leading man. Born in 1942, in Suffolk County, he began his career in the theater in the late 60s, before starting to act in films and television.

With a filmography of nearly 70 titles, Hoskins worked under directors such as Steven Spielberg and bid farewll as one of the seven dwarfs in "Snow White and the Huntsman" (2012).

The star was nominated for an Oscar for best actor in 1987 for the film "Mona Lisa" in which he starred with Michael Caine and Robbie Coltrane.

The London actor suffered from Parkinson's since 2012, when he announced his retirement after a prolific career that began with his gangster characters in British films of the 1980s.

International success came with the film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” directed by Robert Zemeckis, where he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his unforgettable detective Eddie Valiant.
