Kim
Novak.
Millions of viewers around the world fell in love with Kim Novak in 1958
when Alfred Hitchcock directed her in Vertigo
The magic of a film in which, besides the beauty
of the actress, much had to do with the complexity the director gave to
her character.
Novak had already been seen in important films such as The Man
with the Golden Arm (1955, Otto Preminger) and Picnic
(1955, Joshua Logan), but the platinum blonde with translucent eyes
trying to escape from James Stewart, stopped breaths and squeezed hearts
when she made believe she had died after falling from a tower.
She was 25 years old, and Stewart fifty; and when the mature actor held
her in his arms and kissed her, he was one of the most envied men of the
time.
In the late sixties, tired of the pressures of
Hollywood, Kim Novak retired from the cinema and went to paint, raise
horses and llamas on a ranch in California.
She made sporadic appearances on screen, mainly on television; but in
the memories of her secret lovers nothing was able to remove the
seductive image printed on Vertigo.
Maybe because Kim Novak received a warm tribute in the Cannes Film
Festival last year, she was invited to deliver an award at the latest
Academy Oscars.
At 81 years of age, she tried to look her best at
a gala ceremony in which hiding wrinkles and showing youthful vigor is a
requirement.
The next day, the United States media echoed not only the criticism
suffered by Kim Novak because of her physical appearance, but also the
mockery they made of her to.
Billionaire Donald Trump wrote in his Twitter account that the actress
"should sue her plastic surgeon" and several cosmetology specialists
were quick to offer their opinions.
Plastic
surgeon William Bruno, who in Beverly Hills provides services to the
"crème de la crème", said in a survey by HollywoodLife that the former
star "had gone too far with cosmetic surgery." And he elaborated, "What
is most striking is her chin. It does not look as a delicate and
feminine chin, but rather like a masculine chin.”
Overwhelmed by the opinions of a world that is
increasingly becoming an unstoppable show, the legendary Kim Novak ran
for cover among her horses and llamas.
For weeks
she was ruminating about the public affront, until a few days ago she
decided to respond in a letter posted on Facebook. She explains that if
she was awkward and stiff at the Oscars it was because she had taken
medication to calm her nerves. But the mockery –she said– had been too
humiliating for her to leave home.
"However,
I will no longer restrain myself from speaking out against those who
teased me," and referred to a past about which there are still
questions: "Years ago I walked away from Hollywood, partly because I did
not want to face the stalkers". And she made clear that if she had left
the “film Mecca” it was because she had "yielded to the pressure,
instead of fighting for what she felt was right."
In her letter, Novak contrasted the cruel reaction of the American
public with the tribute she had received in Cannes, and made clear that
for her, "a person has the right to look as good as possible, and I feel
better when I look better
".
As for her past
glories and her ageing film lovers, not a single reference was made;
perhaps because she knows she will always be the platinum blonde created
by Hitchcock, the first among them all.

Magia
A
No parece
