AS IF THE COLD WAR HAD NOT ENDED

“The Republicans, the neo-conservatives and the mainstream media have been telling us all these years that America won the Cold War. They spoke too soon. From the residue of the old Soviet Union, a new nationalist, nuclear-armed, resource-rich Russia has risen to challenge Western claims of triumphalism. The new Cold War is upon us, and the American elites have no suggestions except to fight it again.”

These are the views about the way the powers in his country are reacting to the current situation in Ukraine that the well-informed American political commentator, Tom Hayden, presented in an article, posted on March 3, in his digital site "The Peace & Justice Resource Center".

“In South Carolina, the home state of slavery and militarism in the US, Senator Lindsey Graham, running against a Tea Party challenger, was quick to advocate that they ‘create a democratic noose around Putin's Russia’." 

“His apparent point is that the Cold War won't have finished until they take Ukraine and choke all of Russia with armed neo-liberal allies of the West.” 

“Proponents of NATO and corporate neo-liberalism simply are unable to stop pushing against Russia's borders and probing its most cherished regions. They already have incorporated Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic, most of what they call ‘post-Soviet space’."

“They were repelled militarily when they sought to grab Georgia. That should have satisfied their thirst for full dominance. But they went too far, supporting protests in western Ukraine that toppled the elected government and now are pushing an International Monetary Fund agenda, which will deepen an economic crisis. Even before the current mess, the Kiev government flirted with NATO and sent troops to Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“The present conflict is very unlike the Cold War in one sense: there is no ‘communist threat.’ There are communist partisans in Ukraine of course; hot with their memories of the Nazis and fascists they fought in the Ukraine, and whose descendants now are active in the Western-supported Svoboda Party, which represents over ten percent of the national vote and up to 40 percent in the western Ukraine.” 

“What the West faces in the western Ukraine, and in Russia generally, are powerful nationalist, ethnic cultural and religious currents. Any western intervention, direct or indirect, incites that vast well of resistance. Outside pressure toughens inside resolve,” warns Hayden.

For his part, U.S. political analyst Bill Blum, looking into the situation in Ukraine, says, “the United States strives for world domination, hegemony wherever possible; it has been their main occupation for over a century; it’s what they do in Washington for a living.”


“The United States, NATO and the European Union form The Holy Triumvirate. The Holy Triumvirate has subsidiaries, chiefly The International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, International Criminal Court … all help to keep in line those governments lacking the Holy Triumvirate Seal of Approval.

“The IMF, WB, and WTO impose market fundamentalism, while foreign leaders who act too independent are threatened with being handed over to the ICC for heavy punishment, as the United States imposes sanctions on governments and their leaders as only the King of Sanctions can, lacking any sense of hypocrisy or irony.”

“And who threatens United States domination? Who can challenge The Holy Triumvirate’s hegemony?  Only Russia and China, if they were as imperialistic as the Western powers.”

“The Holy Triumvirate would love to rip Ukraine from the Moscow bosom, evict the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and establish a US military and/or NATO presence on Russia’s border.”

“Kiev’s membership in the EU would then not be far off; after which the country could embrace the joys of neo-conservatism, receiving the benefits of the standard privatization-deregulation-austerity package and join Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain as an impoverished orphan of the family.”

“But no price is too great to pay to for being part of glorious Europe and the West!” Blum concludes ironically.

“Los republicanos, los neoconservadores y los medios de comunicación nos han estado contando todos estos años que ya Estados Unidos ganó la guerra fría. Hablaron demasiado pronto. Desde los residuos de la antigua Unión Soviética, una nueva Rusia, con un nacionalismo nuevo, con armas nucleares y rica en recursos naturales, se ha alzado en desafío de los reclamos triunfalistas occidentales. Se nos plantea una nueva guerra fría y las élites estadounidenses no tienen otra sugerencia que hacernos que la de ponernos a guerrear otra vez”. Es así como el tres de marzo último describió el documentado comentarista político estadounidense Tom Hayden, en su sitio digital “The Peace & Justice Resource Center”, la forma en que los poderes fácticos de su país están reaccionando ante la situación actual en Ucrania.

En Carolina del sur, el estado donde se originaron la esclavitud y el militarismo en los Estados Unidos, el senador Lindsey Graham, respondiendo un ataque de un aspirante del Tea Party a su cargo, propuso "crear un cerco democrático en torno a la Rusia de Putin”. Aparentemente, según su criterio, la guerra fría no habrá terminado hasta que Estados Unidos ocupe Ucrania y Rusia quede totalmente rodeada de bien armados países neoliberales aliados de occidente.

Los dirigentes de la OTAN y el neoliberalismo corporativo simplemente son incapaces de detener su arremetida contra las fronteras de Rusia y sus regiones más apreciados luego de apropiarse de Croacia, Estonia, Letonia, Lituania, Hungría, Eslovenia, Polonia y República Checa, además de Albania, Bulgaria, Eslovaquia, Serbia y Rumanía, casi todo lo que ellos llaman el "espacio post-soviético".

Fueron repelidos militarmente cuando intentaron hacerse de Georgia. Eso debería haber satisfecho su sed de dominación. Pero han ido demasiado lejos, apoyando las protestas en la Ucrania occidental que provocaron el derrocamiento de su gobierno electo y ahora impulsan una agenda del Fondo Monetario Internacional que profundizará la crisis económica. Incluso antes de que se produjera el desorden actual, el gobierno de Kiev coqueteó con la OTAN y envió tropas a Irak y Afganistán.

El conflicto actual es muy distinto de la guerra fría en el sentido de que no hay ninguna "amenaza comunista". Por supuesto, hay partidarios comunistas en Ucrania estimulados por sus recuerdos de los nazis y fascistas que agredieron a su país cuyos descendientes están ahora activos en el partido Svoboda, apoyado por los países occidentales, que representa más del diez por ciento de la votación nacional y hasta 40 por ciento en la zona occidental de Ucrania.

Lo que se observa en el oeste de Ucrania, y en general en Rusia, son poderosas corrientes nacionalistas, étnico-culturales y religiosas en las que cualquier intervención occidental, directa o indirecta, incita la resistencia y toda presión exterior endurece su determinación, advierte Hayden.

Por su parte, el politólogo norteamericano Bill Blum al abordar la situación en Ucrania observa que “Estados Unidos se esfuerza por dominar al mundo y lograr la hegemonía siempre que sea posible… esta ha sido su ocupación principal por más de un siglo… es lo que hacen en Washington para ganarse la vida”.

Los Estados Unidos, la OTAN y la Unión Europea forman el Santo triunvirato cuyas principales filiales son el Fondo Monetario Internacional, el Banco Mundial, la Organización Mundial de Comercio y la Corte Penal Internacional... todos ayudan a mantener a raya los gobiernos que carecen del sello de aprobación del Santo triunvirato.

El FMI, el BM y la OMC imponen el fundamentalismo del mercado, en tanto que los líderes extranjeros que actúan en forma demasiado independiente son amenazados de ser entregados a la CPI para recibir duro castigo, en tanto Estados Unidos impone sanciones a gobiernos y líderes con la hipocresía y la ironía que los reyes estilan para imponer su voluntad a sus súbditos.

¿Y que amenaza la soberanía de los Estados Unidos? ¿Quién puede desafiar la hegemonía del Santo triunvirato? Sólo Rusia y China, si fueran tan imperialistas como las potencias occidentales. Al Santo triunvirato le encantaría extraer a Ucrania del seno de Moscú, desalojar a la flota rusa del mar negro y establecer un ejército estadounidense o la presencia de la OTAN en la frontera de Rusia.

“La membrecía de Kiev en la UE no estaría lejos; después, el país abrazará las alegrías del neoconservadurismo, recibirá los beneficios de la privatización-desregulación-austeridad y el paquete estandarizador y se unirá a Portugal, Irlanda, Grecia y España como pobres huérfanos de la familia.

“Pero ningún precio será demasiado alto si sirve para ser parte de la gloriosa Europa y del triunfante Occidente” ironiza Blum.
