Stalin: Reflexiones actuales a propósito de la biografía clásica de Isaac DeutscherCubarte.- These thoughts are a tribute to all the revolutionaries who -without exception- suffered the great historical drama of witnessing how the socialist ideas of October 1917 became frustrated. I do so with admiration and respect for the Russian people who knew how to carry out the first socialist revolution in history and to defeat fascism decades later under the leadership of Stalin. That same Russian people who, 130 years earlier, defeated the military offensive of Napoleon Bonaparte.

My views are based on the experience gained in nearly 50 years of struggle for socialist ideals in the beautiful trench of the Cuban Revolution, inspired by the ideas of Fidel and Marti, the first Marxist-oriented revolution that has triumphed in what has been called the West.

Indeed, in the first item of their critique of Feuerbach, Marx and Engels object that he failed to take into account the subjective factor. They say:

"The fundamental flaw of all previous materialism - Feuerbach´s included- is that it only conceives things, reality, the sensory perceptions, in the form of objects to be contemplated; but not as a human sensory activity, not as a practice, not in a subjective way."

From the early years of the revolution, Fidel and Che told us about the importance of the subjective factor. Life has shown its value for the cause of human progress and it has also proved its influence in historical stagnation and decline. A long list of facts demonstrates this in practice, both positively and negatively. Stalin is one of the leading examples of the latter, perhaps the most important one in the 20th century, of how subjectivity can adversely affect history. Please note, as here expressed, that subjectivity is revealed in culture.

The essential lesson to be learned from this story is in the human fabric, ie, where the subjective factor played a decisive influence on the tragic outcome of so-called "real socialism" which, being so simplistic, lost all reality.

A key aspect that the experience of the 20th century reveals is that in the USSR the teachings of Engels went unheeded. Engels, who with his immense talent and modesty, critically pointed out that both Marx and himself, in stressing the economic content as the determining factor, had forgotten the form and therefore the process of genesis of ideas. He literally said:

"A single point is still missing, regarding which, neither Marx nor I have sufficiently emphasized in our writings, and thus the blame belongs to both of us all alike. What we mostly insisted upon -and we could not help but doing so- was to derive political and juridical ideas and acts conditioned by these, from basic economic facts. In so doing, the content made us forget the form, that is the process of genesis of these ideas, etc. Thus, we provided our adversaries with good excuse for their errors and misrepresentations." [See K. Marx, F. Engels, Selected Works, Vol. 3 p, 523, Progress Publishers Moscow].

In the political practice that Stalin represented, essential formal aspects of ethical, legal and political nature were overlooked. The result was particularly serious because it is through these aspects that the real lives of millions and millions of people, who naturally influence the course of history, become apparent. Being underestimated, two fundamental categories at the heart of culture and the revolutionary struggles: the ethical and juridical, did not receive proper attention or were simply relegated.

In 1917, in old Petrograd and generally in Russia, the most advanced political and social thought of the European intelligentsia coexisted with the exploitation and misery of the Russian peasantry and the working class. The need to fight against foreign domination, i.e., imperialism, was coupled with the need to stand up against feudalism and the Tsarist rule. Not until February 1917 did a triumphant bourgeois revolution take place in Russia, while in Europe it had begun over two centuries earlier. Feudalism, imperialist domination and the Tsarist monarchy was the setting that nurtured the political formation of Stalin, of course, also influenced by Leninism. He absorbed these within the cultural limitations referred to above. Stalin was a revolutionary, but he was unable to attain the magnitude of a full socialist leader.

Unlike Lenin and other Bolsheviks, Stalin never lived or traveled in other countries of the old continent, nor did he absorb the revolutionary wisdom of other regions. Naturally, he was influenced by Lenin, which must not be denied  because it is part and parcel of the drama, but he assumed this influence on the basis of the old Russian culture from  which, even opposing it, he was never able to extract socialist conclusions applicable to the world of his times.

Objectively, Europe alone could not carry out the socialist revolution; the reasons would be subject to an analysis that is beyond the scope of this text. But to fully understand the culture of Marx and Engels, especially to apply it creatively, you would have to take the intellectual tradition of the old continent because the founders of socialism were its most consistent exponents in the 19th century. They were the legitimate successors to the revolutionary ideas expressed in previous centuries during the Illustration and by the encyclopaedists. From this cultural fact, Stalin did not draw the necessary conclusions, which limited his universal reach.

On the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba, in January 1998, Fidel Castro referred to the errors of the policy pursued under Stalin and stressed that:

"As a Pole, the  Pope  lived the crossing of the Soviet troops and the creation of a socialist state under the principles of Marxism-Leninism applied in a dogmatic way, without taking any account of the specific conditions of that country, and without the extraordinary political and dialectical sensitivity of Lenin, who was capable of the Brest-Litovsk peace, capable of  the NEP and before that,  was the man able to travel in a sealed train through the territory of a country that was at war with Russia. All of these acts demonstrated intelligence, capacity, courage and real political genius that never ceased to be Marxist." [See Castro, Fidel. Cuban television appearance, January 16, 1998, Granma, January 20, 1998].

Lenin was educated amidst the revolutionary struggles in the Europe of his time. A study of the life of the founder of the Soviet state shows that he enriched his mind surrounded by the vast culture and by actively participating in the scenarios of various European countries, including those that gave birth to the thoughts of Marx and Engels. That was also the case with other paradigmatic examples like Ho Chi Minh. The illustrious Vietnamese was one of the founders of the French Communist Party, he lived and worked in the United States, traveled to many parts of the world and received in his home country the influence of French culture that had come to impose colonialism and knew how to assume it from his Third World, Asian and universal authenticity.

The Leninist concepts of the Russian revolution posited the thesis that that country was the weakest link of the European imperialist chain. Hopes were that the process begun in October 1917 in Petrograd would have such an impact that it would give rise to a revolutionary outbreak in Western Europe, beginning in Germany. This did not happen; then emerged the idea of building socialism in a single country. On the other hand, Euro-Asian Russia was part of the immense Asian world. This view may have been valid for some time after the October Revolution, but no one will admit it to be a correct revolutionary strategy for a whole century.

The genius of Lenin on addressing these issues was extraordinary, but Stalin did not draw from his texts any conclusions about the possibility and necessity of articulating the interests of socialism with the situation that was emerging in the Asian countries and in what has later been called the Third World.

Let us revisit Lenin´s characterization of Stalin and we shall see that he was a true prophet. In 1922 he wrote:

"From this point of view, I believe that the key to the stability problem are such members of the CC as Stalin and Trotsky. The relations between them, in my view, contain a good half of the danger of that split which could be avoided, and for that purpose it would be convenient, among other things and in my opinion, to extend the CC to 50 or even 100 members.”

“Comrade Stalin, having become General Secretary, has concentrated in his hands an immense power, and I'm not sure that he will always know how to use it wisely. Moreover, Comrade Trotsky, as shown by his battle against the CC over the problem of the People's Commissariat of Means of Communication, does not only distinguish himself for his great capacity. Personally, he is perhaps the most capable man in the CC, but he is too arrogant and too attracted to the purely administrative side of matters.”

“These two qualities of two prominent leaders of the current CC may lead unintentionally to a split; and if our party does not take steps to prevent it, the split may come without anyone noticing it.” [See V. I. Lenin, Letter to Congress, Moscow. Foreign Language Publications, / SA /].

The policy pursued by Stalin during the gestation of the Second World War and his pact with Hitler is one of the murkiest processes of his long career. Nazism was rejected by all peoples and in particular by the progressive and socialist forces. The pact placed the latter in a very difficult position even in Germany.

Fidel himself noted in the aforementioned appearance that ... "when talking with Soviet visitors, I asked them three questions: Why the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact? That happened in 1939 when I was around 13. (. ..) Why had they invaded Poland to gain a few kilometers of land? Ground that was then disastrously lost in a matter of days (...) Why the war against Finland?, was the  third thing I asked them . (...) Well, that came at a very heavy price for the international communist movement, to Communists from all over the world, so disciplined and so loyal to the Soviet Union and the Communist International, that when it said: "You have to do this", that was that. Then every communist party in the world having to explain and justify the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact, became very isolated from the masses." [See Castro, Fidel. Appearance cited].

History later revealed- as an aggravating circumstance- that Stalin acted this way despite the intelligence reports of his country indicating that Hitler was preparing an offensive against the Soviet Union. However, it must be recognized that after the Nazi attack, Stalin successfully led the counteroffensive. The Soviet people fought heroically, the Red Army reached Berlin after a superhuman effort in which millions died. The war ended with victory over fascism but, in turn, the Yalta and Potsdam agreements were signed and the stage was set for the division of the world into two great spheres of influence. Thas was not good for socialism.

In subsequent years when the cold war was unleashed; neither Stalin nor his successors were able to understand the options and possibilities that an alliance between the Third World societies and socialism would have opened. A universal conception built on cultural foundations was required and they did not have one.

In 1959 the Cuban Revolution came to power based on its national historical tradition and with a Latin American, Caribbean and universal perspective. The Third World thesis of Fidel and Che would become a socialist attempt to change the bipolar world.

The assault on heaven meant for the true revolutionaries of the 20th century overcoming definitively the established bipolarity from the Left instead of the Right, as happened later in the 80s. Examination of some of the most important events of the 60s shows that regardless of their different political hues, they were characterized by the need to overcome the bipolar world.

These are some of them: the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the Misile Crisis of 1962, the tragic division of the international communist movement that triggered the split between China and the USSR, the emergence and development of the liberation war in Vietnam, the war of liberation of Angola, the downfall of the colonial system in Asia and Africa, the birth and rise of the Non-Aligned Movement, the growth of the liberation movements in Latin America, the Sandinista Revolutionary Movement; the progressive military movements in Latin America, particularly Peru and Panama, the French  May, the Czechoslovak crisis, and the previous situations in Hungary and Poland.

The heirs of Stalin's legacy could not live up to this challenge because they were locked in the policy derived from the agreements of Yalta and Potsdam and the idea of building socialism in a single country had spread to several nations after the Second World War. Stalin's successors could not face the dilemma because three years after his death, when Stalinism was denounced in 1956 for his crimes, a profound, radical and consistent analysis of the nature and character of his regime was never done. It could be said that it was not possible then and much less by those born out of that policy. Well, that is what happened. Today, 80 years later, it is not only possible but indispensable, because as long as this is not done, the ideas of Marx and Engels may not emerge triumphant from the chaos they were plunged into in the 20th century.

Later on those who wished to change the bipolar world from a socialist standpoint, as did Fidel and Che in Latin America, were accused of violating the laws of economics; while indeed those who did not take those laws into account were the ones who ignored that the development of the productive forces and the scientific progress tended to overcome bipolarity. The subsequent course of events dramatically underscored the fact that those who ignored the economic laws or tried to accommodate them to their conservative positions were precisely the ones who under the banners of socialism rejected the Cuban revolutionary thesis

There are three important conclusions on which to reflect since the recent beginning of this century: The first is that this change was a necessity of the growing globalization of the productive forces and, therefore, of the world´s economic and political development. The second, that since it was not done from the Left, it came from the Right.  And the third, that the change from the Left could have been possible only by promoting the struggle for national liberation in Asia, Africa and Latin America and trying to link it with the ideas of socialism. That was the challenge that socialism faced.

Isaac Deutscher in his already classic biography of Stalin, says the Soviet leader replaced Marx's idea about violence being the midwife of history, by the notion that it was the mother of history. The intellectual sophistication needed to grasp the subtlety of the definition by Marx was, in my opinion, beyond the cultural possibilities of Stalin.

Indeed, the fundamental error of revolutionary politics in the 20th century- conditioned in the last instance by Stalin-  was that it marched forward divorced and separated from culture; even in the case of the USSR, as we know, it went to the most dramatic extremes. In Cuba, as we pointed out, we had the great fortune of counting on the wisdom of the greatest revolutionary statesman and the greatest intellectual of the nineteenth century:  José Martí. The unique lesson of the Cuban revolution in these two centuries and to this day lies precisely in having asserted and enriched this relationship. That is the uniqueness of Martí and Fidel Castro.

The radicalism of the revolutionary thought of Martí was coupled with an intense and consistent humanist treatment of the peoples in the oppressive metropolis: the United States and Spain. On this basis he made a singular contribution when calling for the necessary war against Spanish rule, which was to be humane and brief, without hatred against those who opposed to this lofty purpose. This contribution deserves to be studied by those in the world who make slanderous accusations against the men and women who strive for radical transformations and also by those who intend to achieve them through extremist methods. The only way to succeed is by promoting cooperation between human beings and ensuring their full freedom and dignity. This is the way to be consistently radical.

In Cuba, the Marxist idea of violence was understood in the way that was conceived and applied by José Martí following the best revolutionary traditions of our country. These traditions taught us that along with the firmness of principles and the struggle for social and political goals, we had to win over to our pursuits the Spaniards and the Americans, or at least make them understand our aims. In Cuba the concept of divide and rule was radically surpassed and the principle of unite to win became established. That is a much more radical and consistent policy than that of the extremists.

Regarding Socialism, there are highly revealing thoughts of Martí that can point out where the weaknesses of the policy pursued by Stalin lied.

Fermín Valdés Domínguez, his close friend since childhood, wrote to him from Cuba about the work he was doing for socialism. The Apostle wrote back  to his soul brother in this way:

"(...) One thing I have to celebrate you for very much, and it is the affection with which you deal, and your manly respect for Cubans who sincerely seek - with this name or that- a little more friendly order and essential balance in managing the things of this world. An aspiration is to be judged by its nobility and not by this or that wart placed by human passion. Two dangers has the socialist idea -like so many others- that of foreign readings, confused and incomplete, and the arrogance and disguised rage of the ambitious, who wishing to get up to in the world and find shoulders on which to raise themselves, begin by pretending to be frantic defenders of the defenseless. Some go like beggars of the queen (...) Others pass from fanatics to chamberlains, like those that Chateaubriand describes in his "Memoirs." But in our people the risk is not as great as in angrier societies with less natural clarity: our job will be to explain, smoothly and deeply, as you will know how: the case is not to compromise the sublime justice by wrong or excessive ways to ask for it. And always with the justice, you and me, because the errors of form do not authorize souls of good birth to desert its defense (...) ". [See Martí, José, Collected Works, Vol. 3, p. 168].

In 1884, on the occasion of the death of Karl Marx, José Martí wrote a chronicle that can help us clarify what happened to socialism in the twentieth century. The Apostle said the following:

"See this great hall. Karl Marx has died. Since he sided with the weak, he deserves honor. But little good does he who points out the damage and burns with generous desire to remedy; better is he who teaches soft remedy to the damage. (...) "[Marti, José, C. O. t. 9, p. 388].

Later on, he wrote:

"Karl Marx studied the ways to settle the world on new foundations, and he awakened the sleeping, and taught them how to throw down the broken beams. But he walked swiftly and somewhat in the shadows, without seeing that children are not born viable, or from a people´s bosom in history, or from a woman´s breast in the home, who has not had a natural and laborious gestation. Here are good friends of Karl Marx, who was not only a titanic mover of the rages of European workers, but a deep scrutinizer of the reasons of human miseries and the destinies of men; a man devoured by the urge to do good. He saw all that which he carried within himself: rebelliousness, a road to the summit, struggle." [Ibid].

The appreciation and high esteem that Martí had for Marx's thought is apparent. On the critical reservations regarding extremism, it is necessary to note that at the time in New York, anarchist ideas were widely confused with Marxism. Engels, from Europe, stated that the ideas of Marx were not being applied in North America. It is accepted that both Marx and Engels always cautioned against extremism and the formulations of the anarchists. On the idea that they were throwing men against each other, it must be observed that on that date Martí was preparing a war that even when he envisoned it as a necessary, humane and short war, it would necessarily involve armed conflict.

In a later comment to the beautiful, humane and profound description that José Martí dedicated to Karl Marx, he stated:

"Here is a Lecovitch, a man of newspapers: see how he speaks: reflections of that tender and radiant Bakunin come to him: he begins to speak in English, he turns to others in German:  da! da! entusiastically respond his countrymen from their seats when he speaks to them in Russian.¨

“The Russians are the whip of reform: but no, these impatient and generous men, stained with anger, are still not the ones who will lay the foundations of the new world: these are the spurs and come forward as the voice of the conscience, that might fall asleep: but the steel of the spur does serve well as the founding hammer" [Ibid].

All this is what Stalin lacked. He was unable to realize that the steel of the spur is not enough to build a new society.

In his famous biography of Stalin, Deutscher points out:

"Here we suspend the history of the life and work of Stalin. I do not hold any illusions that we will be able to draw final conclusions from it nor to make, on its basis, a reliable judgment about the man, his achievements and failures. After so many climaxes and anticlimaxes, the drama of Stalin seems only now to approach completion, and we do not know what new perspective his last act could add to the previous ones. What seems definitely established is that Stalin belongs to the lineage of the great revolutionary despots, the same that produced Cromwell, Robespierre and Napoleon." [See Deutscher, Isaac. Stalin political biography, Controversy, Book Institute, Havana, 1968].

We may agree with the comparison with Cromwell, Robespierre and Napoleón, but the following reflection must be added:

Robespierre died tragically defending an ideal that proved impossible at the time; the purest ideas that shaped the French revolutionary thought of the 18th century. The rise of the bourgeoisie stopped him. Napoleon laid the legal and political foundations of the French bourgeoisie and paradoxically opened the way to the bourgeois-feudal alliance that defined capitalist politics in the 19th century. Cromwell also managed to pave a positive path for the English bourgeoisie and left open the possibilities for it to rise further.

Stalin did not achieve these objectives in relation to socialism. Neither was he able to encourage the socialist revolution in Europe and the world, nor consolidate it in the USSR. Russia returned to capitalism seven decades after the October Revolution under new and radically different conditions, and that reversal is determined, among other factors, by the grave errors of Stalin who lacked the necessary stature and historical vision.

We can conclude that the hour of Stalin is definitely over and that the prospects of a new era are just before our eyes. If Stalin belongs to the category of revolutionary despots, we must draw the lesson that it is not possible with the latter to open a lasting way toward a socialist society that needs to be built with love and culture.

Obviously, if the revolutionary despots were able to make way for capitalism, the building of socialism cannot be done under the direction of a despot. Stalin was accused of cult of personality; I think that what was missing was a socialist personality, he lacked what the Cuban revolution does have: the revolution of Martí, continued by Fidel, which is based on the best patriotic traditions of our people with a true sense of universality.

To draw a final conclusion from the above, and especially from what we stated at the beginning, experience teaches us the importance of the so-called categories of the superstructure. That is one of the essential keys to discover what happened and to find new ways toward socialism in the 21st century.

The economy operates through them and there is a dialectical relationship between them. If natural and social evolution is marked by the inseparable relationship between form and content, as Engels said, it is understood that the rigor, seriousness and passion with which the forms are examined become the center of our revolutionary duties. Morals are closely related to the social question and the legal systems. These categories: morals, social issues and legal system make up the core from which philosophical investigations can be performed to establish the valid political and legal practice to find new ways of socialism. Finally, the issue of culture and especially the role of subjective factors acquire a practical significance because it is projected on the need for ethical and legal principles and the ways of practicing politics.

For any transforming endeavor to be successful it is essential to articulate the political practice with culture. The victory and continuity of the Cuban Revolution confirm the validity of this reasoning. A profound reflection on this issue is required today.

The rupture of the ties between culture and politics was undoubtedly at the root of the serious setbacks that occurred. In Latin America, the tradition of our homelands sustained the aspiration to a culture of empowerment and multinational integration to which Simón Bolívar and José Martí referred to as the moral republic of America. The fundamental trend of that culture was anti-imperialist and its main roots sprang from the working and exploited population. What was and still is most immediately important for revolutionary politics is to encourage this trend. And this can and must be done by seeking the incorporation of the intelligentsia to the emancipating endeavor that is present in the most revolutionary traits of our spiritual evolution.

Obviously, this has to be done with culture and information about the origin and history of Latin American ideas. Wisdom and clear understanding of the role of subjective factors in the history of civilizations are needed, because that was precisely what was ignored in socialist political practice. As transpires from the historical practice after the death of Lenin, a vulgar, coarse materialism was imposed by Stalin that paralyzed the enrichment and updating of the ideas of Marx and Engels. This required, as Mariátegui, did do from his IndoAmerican view, a study of the role of culture from the historical materialist view, but whoever took this road was labeled a revisionist. So the chances of reaching a deeper level in the classical ideas were paralyzed.

Addressing a concept as the one we are raising had its own difficulties while trying to venture into complex problems, but they are infinitely smaller compared to the ones derived from ignoring the need to achieve the relationship of trust between revolutionary politics and the vast and growing body of intellectual workers.

In conclusion, if fluent relations between the revolutions and the cultural movement are not established, the processes of change will never succeed. This is not just a cultural issue, but something essential to political practice. In order to know how to conduct revolutionary politics, the mobilizing importance of art and culture must be considered, and understand that therein lie the foundations of our redeeming ideas.

Deutscher had said it very eloquently in his book and I think that is the main theoretical conclusion that we can reach with regard to Stalin:

"In this disdain for the intangible factors in major political processes lays the main weakness of his vigorous but limited realism." [See Deutscher, Isaac, op cit, p. 420]. This is an exemplary lesson for those who proclaim themselves realists.

If the intangible factors, i.e., those of a subjective nature, are disregarded we will not find the new routes because they influence history objectively and materially. Correlate these words with Engels´self-critical comment mentioned earlier. Let us never forget that man and his society are also part of the material reality of the world -to put it in the language so frequently used by Socialists – that is, of nature. Marti expressed it in verse: All is beautiful and constant/ All is music and reason/ And all, as a diamond/ is coal before it is light. [Marti, J; Complete Works. Versos Sencillos, t.16, p.65]

In 2005, any revolutionary politician has to examine the history of the 20th century starting from the vast accumulated culture without sectarianism in search of the essence of the revolutionary ideas that are to be found in the best of the age old history of man.

In the times of perestroika, someone said that Marx would remain as a cultural issue. I thought: and isn´t this enough? To find new ways the road of culture must be followed; there is no practical alternative policy, and he who does not believe in it, cannot contribute to the revolutions in the 21st century.

I wish to stress that I dedicate these words to all the communists and revolutionaries who fought for socialism, remained loyal and painfully witnessed the tragic outcome of socialism, especially those from the peoples of our America. Whoever feels in his heart the cause of human justice in a radical and universal way and possesses an inquisitive mind, cannot fail to recognize – as Martí stressed – that Marx deserves praise and honor because he took sides with the weak, and must be increasingly aware that he and his loyal companion Friedrich Engels are the highest expression of the social and philosophical thinking in 19th Century Europe. The fanatical renegades of Marxism are not postmodern, but premodern, and have failed to analyze the root causes of what happened with Stalin.

Roman wisdom, in the context of a society based on slavery, of course, noted that what a dying person left as his estate could be accepted as a balanced inventory, once the deceased´s debts had been covered. In the 21st century, men shall improve socialism in practice, and above and beyond the errors committed, they will have to use the necessary tools to transform the world but they will be unable to do so if they discard the heritage of socialism; therefore, I advice the young to conscientiously consider the socialist practice of the twentieth century as a balanced inventory. We do not reject the inheritance of Marx, Engels and Lenin and the socialist ideals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but let us make it our own after a profound evaluation of what took place. Only with the teachings of Marx, Engels and Lenin – but not exclusively theirs - can we perform this task.

In the 1920s, Julio Antonio Mella and the founders of the first Communist Party of Cuba rescued the program of Martí from the oblivion or contempt that befell on it during the early years of the neocolonial republic. Today, in 2005, with the thoughts of the Cuban Apostle and his ultra-democratic program, we Cubans can strengthen the socialist fibers in our country and help rescue them from the discredit and isolation they were subjected to by the political practice that Stalin generated.

[Véase V. I. Lenin, Carta al Congreso, Moscú.
