Over a Million Pakistanis Attended by Cuban Doctors
Cuban surgeons have performed 10,920 operations, 39.9 percent of which were major surgeries

The army of white gowns that
make up the International Henry Reeve Contingent, whose front line arrived in
Pakistan on October 14, 2005 to offer humanitarian aid to earthquake victims,
have already attended to 1,043,125 patients. Of this total, 439,894 were seen
during home visits in mountainous communities of northern Pakistan.

These latest figures were revealed at the command post of the Cuban medical contingent based in Abbottabad and were the result of a survey concluded on February 23. Of the total number attended, female patients accounted for 503,881 or 48.3 percent.
In the surgical tents located at the Cuban medical camps set up in the provinces of North-West Frontier Province and Pakistani-Kashmir, the areas most affected by the earthquake, Cuban surgeons have performed 10,920 operations, 39.9 percent of which were major surgeries.
Cuban tent hospitals, set up in 32 different areas throughout the disaster zone, have taken in some 6,000 new patients over the last few days.
In the tent hospital located in Data, in the Mansehra district, Omer and Nasir, 14 and 13 years old, can be seen moving daily between the hospital ward tent and the tent set up for rehabilitation therapy and physiotherapy. They are from Balakot and, as a result of the earthquake, both lost a limb. Omer Zeb suffered the unimaginable tragedy of realizing that his little sister, squeezed against his chest under the collapsed roof of their house, had died. Nasir Crujjar lost his entire family to the earthquake.
Both children are receiving daily specialized treatment to help cure the wounds left as a result of the amputation, including rehabilitation exercises aimed at strengthening the base of the affected limb and increasing mobility in order to receive a prosthesis that will allow then to reinsert themselves into society.
Omer and Nasir are just two examples of the 76,183 patients that have received specialized physiotherapy in the Cuban tent hospital facilities. Specialists have performed 432,118 rehabilitation treatments using the benefits of modern technology such as laser therapy.

El ejército de batas blancas que integra el Contingente Internacional Henry Reeve, cuya vanguardia llegó a Paquistán el pasado 14 de octubre del 2005 para prestar su ayuda humanitaria a las víctimas del devastador terremoto sufrido seis días antes, ha atendido 1 043 125 pacientes, de los cuales 439 894 son en trabajo de terreno en las comunidades de las montañas del norte de este país.

Lo anterior se conoció en el puesto de mando del contingente ubicado en Abbottabad, al cierre de la información estadística del pasado 23 de febrero. Asimismo se dijo que del total de pacientes, 503 881 son mujeres, lo que representa el 48.3 %.
En los salones quirúrgicos de campaña ubicados en los distintas instalaciones médicas cubanas en las provincias de NWFP y Cachemira paquistaní, las más afectadas por el sismo, los ortopédicos y cirujanos han realizado 10 920 operaciones de importancia, muchas de ellas de gran complejidad.
Además, las salas de ingreso de los hospitales de campaña cubanos, ubicados en 32 posiciones de la región del desastre, han dado ingreso por varios días a cerca de 6 000 pacientes para garantizarles una adecuada asistencia médica.
En el hospital de Data, en el distrito de Mansehra, ya es cotidiano ver a dos adolescentes de 14 y 13 años, transitar diariamente de la tienda de campaña de la sala de ingreso a la que ocupan los rehabilitadores y fisioterapeutas. Ambos son de Balakot y tienen un miembro amputado. Son víctimas del terremoto. Omer Zeb recuerda con mucha tristeza cómo debajo del techo de su casa y con su hermanita más chiquita apretujada a su pecho, se percató de que a ella se le fue la vida. Nasir Crujjar se quedó sin familia.
Ahora diariamente se le dan curas especializadas en las heridas de los miembros amputados y reciben sesiones de ejercicios para que el muñón se fortalezca y aumente su ángulo de movimiento, con el objetivo de recibir una prótesis que les permita reinsertarse en la sociedad y concluir después el tratamiento postprotésico.
Los niños Omer y Nasir son solo dos ejemplos de los 76 183 pacientes que han recibido un tratamiento fisioterapéutico en las instalaciones de campaña del contingente cubano, a quienes se les han aplicado 432 118 técnicas de rehabilitación y terapia física, utilizando entre otros los beneficios de equipos sofisticados como los de rayo láser.
