No one who saw her acting will ever forget her golden curls, charming smile and amazing flair for singing and dancing… No one could be immune to Shirley Temple, American cinema’s most famous child prodigy.

Born in 1928, the actress of films like The Little Colonel, Curly Top, Heidi, Bright Eyes, Stand Up and a great many others in the 1930s and 40s died February 10 at the age of 85.

In 1934, Temple landed a seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox and ranked among the biggest box-office draws up to 1938, the reason that many scholars of the seventh art hold that she saved the company from bankruptcy. She retired from cinema at 21: after a meteoric rise to stardom that started when she was only 5 years old, her performance on the big screen as a teenager was a long way short of what it had been in her early years.

She still holds the record of being American cinema’s youngest star to have won an Academy Award –a Juvenile Oscar in 1935– and left her foot- and handprints at the forecourt at Grauman’s Chinese Theater.
