THE FIVE CUBAN PEACE-FIGHTERS MUST BE RELEASED

Of the quality and purity of human feelings, capable of promoting incredible individual and collective sacrifices in order to achieve higher goals for mankind, speak the virtues and amazing attitudes generated by the struggle of peoples for peace.

One of the highest examples has been that of the five Cuban young men who have devoted their lives to the cause of saving their countrymen, and all humankind, from the terrible scourge of terrorism. They infiltrated gangs sponsored by extremist sectors of the power elites that rule the destiny of the United States and in southern Florida have a true headquarters for their criminal operations.

They took the risk and --totally unarmed-- penetrated the terrorist ranks in Miami. They managed to obtain the necessary evidence to alert the law enforcement authorities of the United States. The latter had been justifying their inaction claiming a lack of evidence to act against those criminal operations that Cuba had been denouncing and from which it had been painfully suffering.

A Cuban civilian airliner blown up in flight with over 70 civilian passengers on board, all dead. Bombs were set off in tourist hotels in Cuba causing fatalities. A Cuban diplomat accredited to the UN was murdered. And there were numerous terrorist acts against hospitals, schools and factories on the island. The US authorities claimed these were not enough evidence for the American authorities to act against the culprits. This demonstrated an obvious complicity with tthem, preventing justice, and impeding peaceful coexistence between the two shores of the Florida straights.

But these five brave defenders of peace did not hesitate to fulfill their mission and - with grave danger to themselves and their families - penetrated the terrorist ranks. Then they managed to give the government of Cuba abundant and reliable evidence of the terrorist preparations. Through official channels, these were placed in the hands of the U.S. government at its highest levels.

This was done, but the criminal control of the police and political environment prevailing in the state of Florida determined that, instead of arresting the terrorists, the courageous whistleblowers were themselves arrested 15 years ago.

Then followed a devious manipulation of the legal processes which led to absurd sentences of up to three life terms, even when, in the legal process there was no evidence of a single dead, injured or any act of violence attributable to the defendants.

The government of the United States refused to release evidence that contradiced the most serious charges against the five accused Cubans. The request that the trial be held in a place other than Miami --where they did not have the slightest opportunity for a fair trial-- was ignored. An intense media campaign to whip up an atmosphere of hatred against the defendants during the trial was financed with illicit payments to the media and numerous corrupt journalists.

The crime of espionage could not be proved against any one of them, because there was no evidence that they had sought or obtained information that would jeopardize the security of the United States. The defendants only sought information related to the terrorist preparations of the gangs of extremist Cuban émigrés.

Since they could not be accused of something serious enough to meet the political objectives pursued by the prosecution, the more important charges against them were limited to the allegation of "conspiracy to commit crime" which did not require any specific since none existed.

And, to avoid the reaction of the U.S. population against such a scandalous legal fraud , the "mainstream media" carried out a rigid censorship policy to prevent the disclosure of the judicial proceedings and the requested and imposed sentences.

These brave peace fighters have been exemplary in fulfilling - with their heads held high- their infamous sentences in prisons scattered throughout the vast territory of the United States.

One of them completed the time of his unfair sentence and, after an additional period of supervised parole in U.S. territory, was able to return to his homeland and his family.  Nevertheless, all five remain committed to solidarity until they all enjoy freedom and can celebrate together the fulfillment of their patriotic duty.

Gerardo Hernández, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, and René González are paradigms of revolutionary pacifism. They are apostles of the struggle for peace whose unfair stay in U.S. prisons is an indelible disgrace to the history of the legal system in the United States.  Their strength and patriotic loyalty has confirmed the capacity of human will to overcome warmongering violence with acts of reason and sacrifice that no empire can prevent.

    LOS 5 PACIFISTAS CUBANOS DEBEN SER LIBERADOS

De la calidad y pureza de los sentimientos humanos, capaces de promover increíbles sacrificios individuales o colectivos en aras de objetivos superiores para la especie humana, hablan las virtudes y actitudes asombrosas que genera la lucha de los pueblos por la Paz. Uno de los más elevados ejemplos de ello ha sido el de los cinco jóvenes cubanos que entregaron sus vidas al propósito de salvar a sus compatriotas, y a la humanidad toda, del flagelo terrible del terrorismo que, infiltrándose en las bandas auspiciadas por sectores extremistas de las élites del poder que rigen los destinos de Estados Unidos tienen en el sur del estado de la Florida un verdadero cuartel general de operaciones criminales.

Ellos asumieron el riesgo y, totalmente desarmados, penetraron las filas terroristas en Miami y lograron obtener las evidencias que eran necesarias para alertar a las autoridades policiales de Estados Unidos, que alegaban para su desidia, una supuesta falta de pruebas para actuar contra los preparativos criminales que Cuba venía denunciando y sufriendo dolorosamente.

Un avión civil cubano dinamitado en pleno vuelo con más de 70 pasajeros civiles a bordo, todos muertos; bombas en hoteles de turismo en Cuba con victimas mortales; asesinato en Nueva York de un diplomático cubano acreditado en la ONU, y múltiples acciones terroristas contra centros hospitalarios, escuelas y fábricas en la isla, no eran evidencia suficiente para que las autoridades estadounidenses se dispusieran a actuar contra los culpables, en evidente contubernio con éstos que frenaba a la justicia e impedía la convivencia pacífica entre ambas costas del Estrecho de la Florida.

Pero estos cinco valientes defensores de la Paz no vacilaron ante las circunstancias y en cumplimiento de su misión - con grave peligro para ellos y sus familias- penetraron las filas terroristas. Lograron tras ello hacer llegar al gobierno de Cuba abundantes pruebas fehacientes de los preparativos terroristas para que, por canales oficiales, se pusieran éstas en manos del gobierno estadounidense en su más alto nivel.

Así se hizo, pero el control criminal del ambiente policial y político en el estado de la Florida determinó que, hace por estos días 15 años, en vez de ser arrestados los terroristas, fueran apresados los valientes denunciantes, Luego vendría una tortuosa manipulación de los procedimientos judiciales que condujo a abultadas penas de hasta tres cadenas perpetuas sin que se hubiera probado un solo muerto, herido o hecho de violencia imputable a los inculpados.

Se escondieron pruebas que obraban en poder del gobierno de Estados Unidos que desmentían las más graves acusaciones contra los cinco cubanos acusados; se ignoró la demanda de que el juicio tuviera lugar en un lugar distinto a Miami, donde no habían las mínimas condiciones para tener un proceso justo, y se financió, con pagos ilícitos a los medios y a numerosos periodistas corruptos, una intensa campaña de prensa para asegurar un ambiente de odio contra los acusados durante el juicio. A ninguno se le pudo probar siquiera el delito de espionaje por cuanto se evidenció claramente que ellos no habían buscado ni obtenido información alguna que pusiera en peligro la seguridad de Estados Unidos sino solo aquella relacionada con los preparativos terroristas de las bandas de emigrados extremistas cubanos.

Como no podían ser acusados de algo suficientemente grave para cumplir los objetivos políticos que se proponía la fiscalía, los cargos más importantes formulados contra ellos se limitaron a la acusación de “conspiración para cometer delito” que no exigía evidencias concretas que jamás existieron.

Y, para evitar la reacción de la población estadounidense contra tan escandaloso fraude legal, en la llamada “gran prensa” - que en Estados Unidos se conoce como “mainstream media”- se aplicó una política de rígida censura a la divulgación de las actuaciones judiciales y sobre las condenas solicitadas e impuestas.

Estos bravos luchadores por la paz han estado cumpliendo de manera ejemplar, y con sus frentes en alto, sus infames condenas en prisiones dispersas por el amplio territorio estadounidense. A uno de ellos se le reconoció el cumplimiento total de su injusta sentencia y, tras una complementaria reclusión domiciliaria en territorio de Estados Unidos, pudo regresar a su patria y su familia, no obstante lo cual los cinco se mantienen articulados solidariamente hasta que todos juntos puedan disfrutar de libertad y celebrar el cumplimiento del deber patrio.

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González son paradigmas del pacifismo revolucionario, apóstoles de la lucha por la Paz cuya injusta permanencia en cárceles estadounidenses constituye un baldón imborrable para la historia del sistema de justicia en Estados Unidos.

Su resistencia y lealtad patriótica ha confirmado la capacidad de la voluntad humana de vencer a la violencia guerrerista con actos de razón y sacrificio que ningún imperio puede impedir.
