The documentary that Saul Landau didn’t get to finish, or, When modesty visited my home.
When news about Saul Landau´s death came out on Tuesday, I was in the middle of a working trip in Villa Clara, and so I could not write my little tribute to this intellectual and artist whom I had the great privilege of meeting in December 2012, when he interviewed me and my family at home.
I
must confess, however, that I did not know the full scope and value of
his life and work as a journalist and film director until a few weeks
ago when I read the message about his very serious illness written by
Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cubans jailed in the United States for the
past 15 years for infiltrating organizations in Miami that carried out
terrorist actions against Cuba.
Saul,
who used to delve into social and political issues that were
uncomfortable for his government or that were generally concealed by the
ideological propaganda disseminated almost always by the hegemonic media
at the service of big money, was making a documentary about the way
Cuban society today views homophobia and discrimination against lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender persons, and particularly about the
educational work regarding sexual rights performed by the National
Centre for Sex Education (Cenesex).
In
the company of fellow Cuban filmmaker Roberto Chile, who was the
cameraman, Saul filmed meetings of LGBT and H activist groups – which
include heterosexuals- of the social networks grouped under CENESEX; he
talked to experts, visited places, participated in activities and
cultural or recreational projects for our community, and delved into
several real-life stories that caught his attention. 
I
shall never forget the
humbleness and respect that Saul showed when he contacted me, his
interest in getting to know and understand our experiences, and the
gentleness and persuasive skill he displayed that morning in our home in
Cojimar, to such a point that -as I recall- he managed to get my mother
to speak on camera, and my partner and I to pose together like two
ridiculous lovebirds in a soap opera.
As
testimony of that day when modesty in person visited my house, we are
fortunate to have these images mostly taken by my son Javier while
Landau worked, and others that we took as keepsakes in my apartment’s
living room.Regarding the unfinished documentary, precisely this Thursday I met Roberto Chile himself and after embracing and immediately remembering Saul he told me that the project will be carried on by Jon Alpert, another outstanding American journalist and filmmaker.
That
could be, without a doubt, a beautiful tribute to his memory.A CubaNews translation.

mi casa
Al conocer el martes
la noticia de la muerte de Saúl Landau, yo estaba en medio de un
viaje de trabajo por Villa Clara, y por eso no pude escribir hasta ahora
mi pequeño homenaje a este intelectual y artista estadounidense a quien
tuve el enorme privilegio de conocer en diciembre del 2012, cuando nos
entrevistó a mí y a mi familia en mi propia casa.
Tengo
que confesarles, sin embargo, que no supe la total dimensión y valor de
su vida y obra como periodista y director cinematográfico hasta que leí
hace solo unas semanas atrás
el mensaje que a propósito de su extrema gravedad le envió Gerardo
Hernández Nordelo, uno de los cubanos presos en los Estados
Unidos desde hace ya 15 años por infiltrarse en organizaciones que desde
Miami han realizado acciones terroristas contra Cuba.
Saúl,
quien solía hurgar en temas sociales y políticos incómodos para su
gobierno o generalmente ocultados por la propaganda ideológica que casi
siempre difunden los medios de comunicación hegemónicos al servicio del
capital, estaba haciendo un documental sobre cómo la sociedad cubana
enfrenta en la actualidad la homofobia y la discriminación contra
lesbianas, gay, bisexuales y personas trans, y en particular acerca de
la labor educativa y a favor los derechos sexuales que realiza el Centro
Nacional de Educación Sexual (Cenesex).
En
compañía del también realizador cubano Roberto Chile, quien le auxiliaba
como camarógrafo, Saúl filmó encuentros de los grupos de activistas LGBT
y H —incluyen a personas heterosexuales— de las redes sociales que
agrupa el Cenesex, conversó con especialistas, visitó sitios,
actividades y proyectos culturales o recreativos para nuestra comunidad,
y ahondó en varias historias de vida que le parecieron interesantes.
No
olvidaré la humildad y respeto con que Saúl me contactó, su interés por
conocer y entender nuestras experiencias, y la gentileza y habilidad
persuasiva que desplegó aquella mañana en nuestro hogar en Cojímar,
hasta el punto de que logró —si mal no recuerdo— hacer hablar a mi madre
ante la cámara, y que mi pareja y yo posáramos juntos cual dos ridículos
tórtolos de telenovela.
Como
testimonio de ese día en que la modestia visitó mi casa en su persona,
nos quedaron por suerte estas imágenes que en su gran mayoría tomó mi
hijo Javier mientras Landau trabajaba, y otras que nos hicimos a modo de
recuerdo en la sala comedor del apartamento donde vivo.
En cuanto al documental inconcluso, precisamente este jueves me encontré
con el propio Roberto Chile y luego de abrazarnos y recordar enseguida a
Saúl, me contó que ese proyecto lo continuará
Jon Alpert, otro importante periodista y director
norteamericano.
Ese
podría ser, sin dudas, un hermoso tributo a su memoria.
