Eduardo R. Chibás: Last Speech
August 5th, 1951

A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

Five centuries ago, the Inquisition yelled at Galileo: Liar! Deceiver! Show evidence that the Earth moves around the Sun! Galileo could not produce physical proof of the obvious fact and was condemned, but continued repeating with strong moral conviction: E pur si muove! But it moves!

Five years ago, I accused the Minister of Education, José Manuel Alemán, of stealing funds that should have gone to school books and breakfasts, and of creating a real estate empire in Miami. Minister Alemán and his buddies yelled: Liar! Slanderer! Present the proof! I could not present physical evidence that they were stealing money from the National Treasury, but kept repeating with strong moral conviction: They are stealing it! They are stealing it!

Now I accuse the Government of Carlos Prío [Socarrás] of being the most corrupt the Republic has seen so far, and its Minister of Education, [Aureliano] Sánchez Arango, who replaced BAGA with ASA- of stealing the money for school books and breakfasts, and of making huge investments in Guatemala and other Central American Republics because the government in Washington would not let him enter the United States on account of his communist background.

Last Sunday, from this same tribune for information and combat, I presented to the people irrefutable proof of the immense corruption within Prío's regime: photographs of schools and hospitals in extreme poverty in contrast with the ostentatious country villas and palaces of government members who not long ago lived in poverty. However, despite the continuous depredations during the administrations of Machado, Batista, Grau San Martin and Carlos Prío, they did not succeed numbing the moral sensitivity of the Cuban people. This speaks highly of the strength of its virtue. My words last Sunday did not have the resonance the very serious situation demanded. Cuba needs to wake up. But my wakeup call perhaps was not strong enough. We will continue appealing to the conscience of the Cuban people.

For its geographical location, the richness of its soil and the natural intelligence of its inhabitants, Cuba has a great destiny reserved in history. Other peoples, in other islands that do not enjoy such a privileged situation as our homeland does, have played a unique, preeminent role in History. Cuba however has seen its historical destiny frustrated so far because of the corruption and shortsightedness of its rulers whose thinking with few exceptions- has never flown high.

The happy coincidence of natural factors so favorable for a great destiny, together with the high quality of our people, awaits only the honest and capable endeavor of a team of government ready to perform its historical task. Such team is not the present administration, corrupted to the core and disguised with new ways to cover up its stealing, smuggling and shamelessness. Neither the false opposition of Batista who encourages the return of the colonels, the castor oil, the rubber beatings and the escape plan with the cunning assistance of international communism; nor the scornful group of followers of President Grau. The only group of government capable of saving Cuba is the Partido del Pueblo Cubano (Ortodoxos) with their anti-pact platform of political independence that accepts no transactions or settlements.

Come on compañeros in Ortodoxia! For economic independence, political freedom and social justice! Let's get rid of the thieves in the government! A sense of shame against money!

People of Cuba, stand up and march! People of Cuba, wake up!

This is the final wakeup call!

¡Pueblo cubano, despierta!

¡Este es el último aldabonazo!
