Chibás’ wake-up call

On Sunday, August 5, 1951, while speaking on the microphones of radio station CMQ and forcefully attacking the corruption in the government of Carlos Prío, political leader Eduardo Chibás said: “People of Cuba, stand up and move! People of Cuba, wake up! This is my last wake-up call! Right then, he shot himself. He died, as a consequence of this wound, on August 16, shortly before his 44th birthday.

Born in Santiago de Cuba, Chibás was a student at the time of [Julio Antonio] Mella and a fighter against the tyranny of [Gerardo] Machado. His idea was to to a political movement whose aim was to clean up the public life of the nation, to eradicate corruption in state administration and to create a space for citizen participation in government affairs. Thus, on May 15, 1947, he founded the Partido del Pueblo Cubano (Ortodoxo) and ran as a candidate for the presidency in the 1948 elections. He lost the election but was positioned as the most respected and charismatic leader of the opposition.

In 1950 allowed the conjecture that he could win the next presidential election. With his great aptitude as a communicator and the slogan Vergüenza contra dinero [A sense of shame versus money] he rallied masses around the increasingly popular Partido Ortodoxo. Next to the leader were the actions of the Juventud Ortodoxa with a much more radical approach.

In an assessment of the impact of Chibás’ leadership, scholar Fernando Martínez Heredia wrote: “Chibás mobilized a huge popular mass towards the exercise of citizens' rights and the understanding that it was possible to put an end to the status quo, to gain independence and justice, and to push the destiny of Cuba forward. He denounced imperialism and stressed the need to break free from its neocolonial bondage. (…) Death interrupted his deeds and leadership, but he remained a herald of popular sovereignty and citizen action, and a moral figure who advocated rescuing the country from the swamp. He certainly did not foresee it, but he was the first recruiter for the troops that conducted the insurrection which unchained a revolutionary process that went far beyond what Chibás ever set himself to do.”

In the ranks of Ortodoxia there was a young lawyer –already outstanding for his rebellious imprint during his university years: Fidel Castro Ruz.

On January 16, 1959, a few days after the victorious arrival of the triumphant Revolution in Havana, Fidel spoke at the grave of Eduardo Chibás and said: “And this day is like a summary of all history, the history of the Revolution; the history of the 26 de Julio that is so closely linked to the history of this grave, to the memory of the man who rests in this grave, to his ideology, his feelings and his preaching; because I must say that without the preaching of Chibás, without what Chibás did, without the civic awareness and rebelliousness he inspired in the Cuban youth, the 26 de Julio would not have been possible."
