The dark side of the coin

It has been calculated that drug dependence during the current millennium will affect about a billion persons in the world, and all of us are in the fight to halt the damages of this scourge to the family and society itself.

“I still clearly remember the day I decided to ask for help at the clinic. My sister Evelyn was with me. Shamefully, I told the doctor about my interest in quitting drugs. I didn’t know how to explain myself and the words just came tumbling out. She patiently nodded approval with her head and only interrupted to ask:

“―Are you ready to start today with the group?

“―How ashamed I feel! I don’t know. – I answered

“I can still hear her answer:

“-Ashamed? It is a shame to roam the street without help. You don’t have to feel that way with us.

“I entered the little hall where other patients were sitting around. A flood of looks studying me, looking me up and down. I blanched and, again, the damned shame ...

“I am really very timid; I talk very little but when I take drugs, I don’t know ... I change completely. Under normal conditions I don’t know how I should or how to do things. That is why I always ask my sister, Evelyn, for advice. She is the one who knows everything. I am rather foolish. My 23 years of age are useless. I started going out when I was 20. Before that my mother didn’t even let me stand on the porch. She said the street was very bad and I was too young. I couldn’t go out until I started to work. For her, there were no parties or discos. What my mother wanted was to have me studying, begin working, find someone and marry.

“And that was what I tried to do. I learned to play the piano. Took a technicians course in mechanical drawing. Since I don’t like that career, I took a course in Emergent Nursing. I graduated with high marks and began to work in the intensive care unit. Later, I began studying by distance for my BS in nursing. However, I couldn’t fulfill all my mother’s dictates. With work I got to know the street and a group of boys and girls with whom I had a lot of fun.

“At first I just smoked and drank liquor. Later that same group encouraged me to take drugs. At first I refused. Later I was tempted to try. I thought I had found freedom and was not aware that each time I was more imprisoned.

“Every day, on returning from the hospital I would go out with my friends and would get back at dawn. Often shortly before having to leave for work.

“My mother scolded me but, now, I was independent. My father? He never cared. At the age of 8 he separated from my mother. He always lived nearby but, however, he could have lived far away, very far away.

“And so two years went by. Even once I was picked up for 47 days. They were terrible times. The earth joined the sky. I was nothing. But I was there. I thought, I thought very much and realized how low I was.

"When I left the street clean – I mean that I had nothing to do with trafficking – I went to work and they didn’t look at me very well. I feel that there are people who reject me. My sister is the one who has given me support.

“I plan to continue working as a nurse, although when I am ready. I don’t feel like that now. I am afraid of applying a wrong treatment for a patient. I am unsure of myself.

“I have gone four months without using although, at times, I am crazy to do so. I am terribly afraid of going back to drugs. That if I go about with that same group I’ll get hooked again. And if I am picked up again? I am worried about my family. I don’t want them to suffer more for anything that isn’t worth it. The only thing it gives is loss, material and spiritual loss.. of the love of persons who are there by you and who care about you.

Reality could have been different.

The feelings of frustration and failure attempting to reach an unattainable behavior in a broken home without a father figure and a bossy mother led the timid and insecure Neleny to find solace in drugs and the wrong solution to her conflicts.

The scarce development of assertiveness due to a rigid upbringing, without contact with the outside world, and lack of communication between parents and children can are, among other reasons, unleashing and aggravation of drug addiction in youths.

“Assertiveness is a social habit acquired throughout life” – explains Cristina Tamayo, psychology specialist. “It depends on the education in which self-esteem is developed, allowing the young person to develop a capacity to defend their rights, considering the rights of the others, and without needing to adopt hostile behavior. On this basis, it is possible to say no to drug addiction”. And the expert adds: “There are persons who develop this quality spontaneously, others need to learn them conscientiously.”

A stable family framework where harmony and respect are strong, where each member understands the value of love in the couple, for studies, for work, and healthy recreation, can be an antidote to keep the individual away from drugs.

Not giving it a chance…

Often when we hear talk about drugs, we think of it in terms of illegal substances and ignore others understood as legal. Some of these are coffee, tobacco and alcohol; the latter affects conduct and consciousness, and is considered the primary portal towards the consumption of other toxic substances.

Drinkers run the risk of losing moral values to such an extent that they are marginalized and, in the worst case, begin relations with drug addicts such as what happened to Hansel who, out of curiosity, decided to try it one day:

“I smoked and drank; at that time I was working for myself (cuentapropista*) and earned a lot of money. I thought that I had everything. I had women, friends(?). I don’t know… Of course I had a lot of people around me and they were not always the best.

“Good people began rejecting me. My family couldn’t stand me; they could not stand the constant scenes and drunken brawls. In the neighborhood almost no one trusted me. I was considered the black sheep. I lost my job and, nevertheless, I continued without caring for anyone; just drugs.

“One day I decided to quit on my own but didn’t last very long. I got hooked again and this time it was worse. I needed to look for specialized help.

“It’s been two and a half years since I have used anything, not even alcohol. It has cost me a great effort. I gave up the groups of persons I had moved around with and my partner. I no longer work on my own and lead an austere life. I understood that money is not an end goal, just a means of survival and nothing more. Under these conditions I feel more assured. Everyone trusts me more. I am enjoying my freedom.

Better safe than sorry

Addiction to psychotropic drugs is enslaving. Their influence disturbs consciousness and personality, deteriorating human qualities developed during life.

Addiction to psychotropic substances is enslaving. Their influence disturbs the conscience and personality, deteriorating human qualities developed during life. Their continued use produces an anti-motivational syndrome in the addict where the most important thing for the person is obtaining the drug.

Each distortion in perceiving reality that follows periods of drug-induced alienation – including visual and auditory hallucinations, terrible scenes and persecution and an incorrect appreciation of distances – produce serious damage in the central nervous system and are, sometimes, the cause of death by suicide.

In his book Against Addictions (“Contra las adicciones”) Doctor Ricardo González points out that a prolonged use of drugs leads to disturbances in the metabolism of fats that determines their deposits in the walls of arteries and that, in time, become blocked. This mechanism is responsible for sexual dysfunction and the occurrence of heart attacks, thrombosis and embolisms.

Damages to sexuality, this specialist emphasizes, appear equally in men and women. Premature or retarded ejaculation can appear in men even a total absence. Less frequently are painful and maintained erections that require an urgent surgical procedure. Similar disturbances occur in women, specially regarding orgasms.

The negative effect of drugs not only affects life, but also damages the psychological and social environment of the person. The stories of Nelehy and Hansel could have been different. Perhaps tragic and irredeemable. They tried to go up such a seductive as well as a slippery slope. In their insistence they fell into an abyss of confusion. Today they try to rise up. Their success depends on their determination.

Me acompañaba mi hermana Evelya.

No sé― contesté

“Su respuesta aún resuena en mis oídos:

“-¿Pena?

Me presentaron.

Si eres tú mismo o tú misma, no necesitas ninguna sustancia que te ayude.“Al principio solo fumaba y tomaba alcohol. Después el mismo grupo me instó a consumir drogas. En un inicio me negaba. Luego me tentó a probarlas.

Yo no había hecho nada.

No me siento capaz.

Me preocupa mi familia.

 No darles cabida…

No sé…

Mi familia no me soportaba, no aguantaba mis constantes escándalos y borracheras.

Hoy intentan levantarse. De su empeño dependerá el éxito.
