Francis received Uruguayan President José Mujica today and held a 44-minute private conversation at the Vatican.

The Vatican’s spokesperson, Federico Lombardi, reported after the meeting that Jorge Bergoglio had said, “I’m happy to have met a wise man.”

In the view of the journalists, the meeting between the Pope and the Uruguayan head of state seemed very friendly, and the private conversation was probably the longest held so far by Francis with a president or political official.

Mujica was wearing a dark suit, a blue shirt with no tie and a green sweater. He was accompanied by an entourage of several people, but not by his wife, Lucía Topolansky, who is temporarily standing in as president.

As soon as they met, the Pope welcomed the visitor and said, “Delighted”. Both leaders embraced. “We have a common friend who is no longer with us,” said Mujica. The Pope agreed, “He helped us think.” They were referring to Alberto Methol Ferré, the Uruguayan theologian and thinker who died in 2009.

After the private meeting there was an exchange of gifts and a photo opportunity.

Mujica donated a set of three statuettes of “gauchos” and the book "La América latina en el siglo XXI" [The Latin America of the 21st Century] by Alberto Methol Ferré. The Pope gave him a lithograph of the Fontana di Santa Marta. The president thanked him and said “I must have a new house to hang this in” to which the Pope responded, “Your Excellency will find the way.”

Saying farewell, the Pope told Mujica, “Thank you so much for your visit,” and they embraced again.

After the meeting, the president said that the Pope had also “thanked” him for “not forming a government that would seek the polarization” of Uruguay and offered to “assist his country in everything possible”. The President added that he will also contribute to any “human task” the Holy See requests of him.

Asked on whether he had requested anything in particular for Uruguay, Mujica responded he “passed the hat around everywhere” and on the subject of poverty he said that when you reach the bottom-line this is no longer merely an economic problem and something else needs to be done.

“It needs militant action and commitment. I ask this church and all others to lend a militant hand, not only economic resources. Other resources are needed as well,” said the Uruguayan President.

“For those of us who come from Rio de La Plata, Francis is a singular Pope. It is like talking to a friend from the neighborhood. I think that if they let him, he will start a revolution of humbleness within the Church,” concluded Mujica.

The Vatican described the meeting as “cordial” with an exchange of “information and ideas on the socio-political situation of the country and the role of religion.”

They discussed “topics of common interest such as the integral development of persons, respect for human rights, justice and social peace.”

The Vatican added that they stressed “the relevant contribution of the Catholic Church to public discussion on such issues, as well as to international peace; and its service to society mainly in the fields of assistance and education.”
