		RACISM AGAINST BEJAY, CUBA AND THE U.S. By Manuel E. Yepe A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann. The uproar started by Republican Congress members of Cuban origin Marco Rubio and Ileana Ros-Lethinen around the recent trip to Cuba of Afro-American superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z has shed light on issues that go far beyond the hostilities between the two sides of the Florida Strait. Both Senator Rubio and Representative Ros-Lethinen are political names in the state of Florida very closely linked to the actions, and especially to the funds that for decades Washington has been allotted to fight the Cuban Revolution. They are both prominent members of what in Cuba is known as the counterrevolutionary Miami mafia, and in Florida is defined as the anti-Cuban hate industry. The very popular couple formed by rapper Shawn Carter (stage name Jay-Z) and pop singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is professionally known as “Bejay”. They have been married for five years and decided to celebrate their anniversary in Cuba taking advantage of the discreet openings in the travel ban (laws which forbid travel to Cuba) recently authorized by President Barack Obama’s administration. These allow travel for certain categories of United Staes citizens with special approval by Washington. The couple could make the trip to “the forbidden island” with their mothers and other relatives and aides. To do so they had to comply with all the restrictions Washington imposes on their citizens who travel to Cuba. The organizers of the Bejay trip had to submit to the Treasury’s Office for Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) a detailed itinerary before they were granted the license for the visit. The laws and regulations of the blockade to Cuba forbid Americans to travel to Cuba, but during the administration of Bill Clinton and for certain categories of persons some were approved: trips for religious, humanitarian and educational purposes. President Bush abolished this, but Barack Obama approved them again as part of his “people- to-people” policy whose explicit aim is that visitors promote “democracy” among Cubans (democracy understood as a synonym for capitalism by Washington). Cuba has always accepted the challenge implied in this purpose which attempts to challenge its national sovereignty. This is because, in practice, it offers Cubans the opportunity to show visitors the falsehoods of the campaign that the U.S. government and the media have waged against Cuba for more than half a century . The distance between the manipulations of the campaign and the truth is of such magnitude that –generally– on the first contact with reality, visitors open up to an understanding of the reasons that underpinned the historical popular accomplishment that is the Cuban Revolution, and the unreasonableness of the policy of hostility of their government against the island. Bejay dedicated their full time in Cuba to visiting the Instituto Superior de Arte [University of the Arts], attending the performances of a famous children theatre company, and a modern dance ensemble among other cultural and educational activities; abstaining from visiting the many beaches and recreation centers for tourism that millions of national and foreign tourists enjoy in Cuba. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Senator Marco Rubio and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen tried to provoke a scandal. They managed to get many American and world media to publish the lie that Beyoncé and Jay-Z had travelled to Cuba illegally (or without the proper license). This was an attempt to reverse Obama’s decisions which have brought a certain relaxation to the prohibition of travelling to Cuba whi affected Americans, and at the same time depicted Obama as a defender of the Cuban government; something that he certainly is not. With this they also suggested that Obama was giving privileged treatment to Afro-Americans and thus win support among non-Black Americans for their anti-Cuban crusade, accusing Bejay and their Black friends and relatives of breaking the U.S. law by travelling to Cuba. Rubio and Ros-Lethinen have never moved a finger in favor of the dark skin of the Latinos who reside in the United States, and much less for Black Americans. As adherents of capitalism, they make use of racism and sexism to keep peoples divided and unable to join together against the unfair order that oppresses them. April 2013.

Yepe La algarabía que armaron los congresistas republicanos estadounidenses de origen cubano Marco Rubio e Ileana Ros-Lethinen en torno al reciente viaje a la Isla de las superestrellas afroamericanas Beyoncé y Jay-Z, trajo luz sobre cuestiones que van más allá de las hostilidades entre ambas costas del Estrecho de la Florida. Tanto el senador Rubio como la representante Ros-Lethenien son figuras políticas del estado de la Florida estrechamente vinculados a las acciones, y muy especialmente a los fondos, que por décadas Washington ha dedicado a combatir a la revolución cubana. Ambos integran de manera prominente lo que en Cuba se conoce como la mafia contrarrevolucionaria de Miami y en la Florida se define como la industria del odio (hate industry) contra Cuba. La muy popular pareja que forman el rapero Shawn Carter (cuyo nombre artístico es Jay-Z) y la cantante pop Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, es conocida profesionalmente como los “Bejay”. Ellos son matrimonio desde hace cinco años y decidieron celebrar su aniversario en Cuba, aprovechando las discretas aperturas en el Travel Ban (ley que prohíbe los viajes a Cuba) autorizadas recientemente por el gobierno del presidente Barack Obama que permiten hacerlo a ciertas categorías de ciudadanos estadounidense expresamente aprobados por Washington. La pareja pudo hacer su viaje a la “isla prohibida” junto a las madres de ambos y algunos familiares y asistentes. Para ello debieron cumplir con todas las restricciones que Washington impone a sus ciudadanos para viajar a Cuba. El grupo que organizó el viaje de los Bejay tuvo que presentar a la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros del Tesoro (OFAC) un itinerario detallado antes de otorgarle la licencia requerida para que la visita tuviera realizarse. Las leyes y regulaciones del bloqueo a Cuba prohíben los viajes a Cuba de los estadounidenses, pero durante el gobierno de Bill Clinton se aprobaron, para ciertas categorías de personas, viajes por motivos religiosos, humanitarios y educacionales, algo que el presidente George W. Bush suprimió y Barack Obama retomó como parte de la política de intercambios “pueblo a pueblo” cuyo declarado propósito es que los visitantes promuevan entre los cubanos la “democracia” (término que para Washington es sinónimo de capitalismo). Cuba ha aceptado siempre el reto que implica este propósito atentatorio contra su soberanía nacional porque, en la práctica, ofrece a los cubanos la oportunidad de demostrar a los visitantes las falsedades de la campaña que hace más de medio siglo libran el gobierno y los medios de información estadounidenses contra Cuba. La distancia que media entre las manipulaciones de esa campaña y la verdad es de tal magnitud que, generalmente, al primer contacto con la realidad, los visitantes se abren al entendimiento de las razones que han dado lugar a la histórica hazaña popular que es la revolución cubana y la sinrazón de la política de hostilidad de su gobierno contra el país insular. Mientras los Bejay dedicaban a tiempo completo su estancia en Cuba a actividades como la visita al Instituto Superior de Arte, la apreciación de las actuaciones de un afamado grupo teatral infantil y las de un conjunto de danza moderna, entre otros eventos de carácter cultural y educacional, absteniéndose de visitar las muchas playas y centros de recreación y turismo que disfrutan en Cuba millones de turistas nacionales y extranjeros, en Estados Unidos el senador Marco Rubio y la representante Ileana Ros-Lehtinen conseguían que múltiples espacios de la prensa estadounidense y mundial se dedicaran a sugerir la mentira de que Beyoncé y Jay-Z habían viajado a Cuba ilegalmente (o sin la debida licencia) para provocar un escándalo. Intentaban con ello revertir las disposiciones de Obama que han traído cierto relajamiento de las prohibiciones de viajes a Cuba que perjudicaban tanto a los estadounidenses y, al mismo tiempo, describir a Obama como un defensor del gobierno de Cuba, que ciertamente no es. Sugerían con ello, igualmente, que Obama daba tratamiento preferencial a los afroamericanos y, de paso, pretendían ganar ascendencia entre los estadounidenses no negros para su cruzada anticubana, acusando a los Bejay y sus amigos y familiares negros de ser violadores de las leyes de su país al trasladarse a Cuba. Rubio y Ros-Lehtinen, jamás han levantado un dedo a favor de la piel oscura de los latinos residentes en los Estados Unidos y, mucho menos, de los negros estadounidenses. Como partidarios que son del capitalismo, se sirven del racismo y el sexismo para mantener a los pueblos divididos e impedidos de unirse contra el orden injusto que les oprime. Abril de 2013.
