Suspicions of Assassination Point North

A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

A few hours after the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, civil rights activist groups in the United States and other countries pointed to the CIA, the State Department and the US Defense Intelligence Agency as presumably involved in the event, and formulated requests to federal agencies to obtain information about plans to poison or murder the Venezuelan leader by other means.

To this end, and based on the Freedom of Information ACT, the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, the coalition Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER), and French Journal Libération, filed a lawsuit in US Courts.

The suit requested a search of all files and documents, including e-mails, letters, dispatches and other messages, memoranda, notes, minutes, photographs, audio recordings, intelligence reports and other data and information related to plans to poison or murder by other means the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez who had just died.

The demanding parties declared they were moved by the US Government’s notorious history of covert assassination attempts against foreign leaders. They also acted in the light of the recent exhumation of the body of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to determine whether his death was caused by poisoning, and related press releases of the findings by the Radio Physics Institute, which processed the data and confirmed the presence of abnormal levels of Polonium-210 in his personal effects.

The demanding parties argued that the public had the urgent need to have information related to any effort to murder the Venezuelan president, including any knowledge the US government has or had related to such macabre purposes, in particular, any involvement they had in these.

For its part, according to numerous media sources, the Venezuelan Government is carrying out a deep investigation of the circumstances of the disease that caused the death of President Hugo Chavez, in particular to find out whether he was poisoned or deliberately exposed to cancer-causing elements.

The practice of murdering adversaries has become a frequent practice of the US Government. So much so that it seems they have the purpose of making public opinion insensitive to assassination as a crime of less humanity through repeatedly manipulating news at their convenience in the corporate media under their control or influence.

It is known that extraterritorial executions without trial carried out by the US government have taken place in developed countries. However, most of them are carried out in Third World nations, usually with the approval and complicity of servile governments; others by paying for the services of criminal bands.

When dealing with powerful adversaries that were once their accomplices in very serious affairs, but are no longer useful, they generally act directly using their huge resources to avoid embarrassing testimony. They start by demonizing the target in the local, regional and global press –linking the target to notorious past crimes they had so far ignored – and can end in complex operations like the assassination of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic or of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

When the adversary is an inconvenient head of state that they are not able to remove through regular practices, such as a coup d’état or the provision of enough economic support to the opposition because the target enjoys a clear popular legitimacy in his country, they may resort to extreme mechanisms such as irregular wars. Examples of these are the ones they have maintained against Cuba for almost 55 years and the one they are carrying out to break the independent will of the Venezuelan people against which they have tried all kinds of strategies and tactics, but to no avail.

This is the simple reason why so many people in the world suspect the death of President Hugo Chavez could have been induced by the US intelligence services, or by the services of another nation on appointment.

In any case, the Venezuelans seem ready to respond to the aggressions against their revolutionary process in the elections that will be held on the coming 14th of April, to choose the one who will continue the Bolivarian Revolution or the one who will liquidate its achievements and its independent and socialist future.
