Some bishops were complicit with the dictatorship, but Bergoglio was not one of them.

The ex Brazilian priest Leonardo Boff, one of the most outstanding representatives of the Theology of Liberation, believes Pope Francis will surprise many by giving The Church a radical turn.

“He is now Pope and can do what he wishes. Many will be surprised with the things he will do. To do them he needs to break up with traditions and leave behind the Vatican’s corrupt curia in order to open the way for a universal Church,” said Boff in an interview published by German magazine Der Spiegel in its coming week’s issue.

The Brazilian theologian says he is very satisfied that the new Pope, Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has taken the name Francis for his office as Pope.

“The name is programmatic: Francis of Assisi represents a Church of the poor and the oppressed, and of responsibility for the environment and rejection of luxury and ostentation,” he added.

Boff also says that although in many aspects –as those related to counterceptives, celibacy and homosexuality- Bergoglio as Cardinal followed a conservative trend, this was due only to Vatican’s pressure; he holds there are indications that the new Pope is much more liberal.

 “A few months ago –for example- he explicitly approved that a gay couple adopt a child. He keeps in touch with priests repudiated by the Church because they got married. And, most importantly, he has not been led away from his conviction that we must be on the side of the poor,” said ex priest Boff.

Boff also rejects recent accusations against Bergoglio according to which he did not provide sufficient support to two Jesuits who were in prison during the Argentinean military dictatorship.

 “I know of the accusations and believe as Nobel Prize for Peace Adolfo Perez Esquivel who as an opponent to the military regime was incarcerated and tortured: There were Bishops who were complicit with the dictatorship, but Bergoglio was not one of them,” he declared.

“So far there are no clear indications of an objectionable behavior. On the contrary, he hid and saved many persecuted priests. I met Orlando Yorio, one of the Jesuits presumably betrayed by Bergoglio, and he never formulated such accusations in my presence,” added Boff. (RD/Agencies)

El exsacerdote brasileño Leonardo Boff, uno de los más destacados representantes de la llamada Teología de la Liberación, cree que el papa Francisco sorprenderá a muchos dando un vuelco radical a la iglesia.

"Ahora es papa y puede hacer lo que quiera. Muchos se sorprenderán con lo que va a hacer Francisco. Para ello necesitará una ruptura con las tradiciones, dejar atrás la curia corrupta del Vaticano para abrirle paso a una iglesia universal", dijo Boff en una entrevista que publica la revista aleman "Der Spiegel" en su edición de la próxima semana.

El teólogo brasileño se declara muy satisfecho de que el nuevo papa, el cardenal argentino Jorge Mario Bergoglio, haya asumido el nombre de Francisco para su pontificado.

"Este nombre es programático: Francisco de Asís representa una iglesia de los pobres y los oprimidos, responsabilidad ante el medioambiente y rechazo al lujo y la ostentación", agrega.

Boff dice además que aunque en muchos aspectos -como lo referente a los anticonceptivos, el celibato y la homosexualidad- Bergoglio como cardenal siguió una línea conservadora, eso se debió tan sólo a la presión del Vaticano y sostiene que hay elementos que indican que el nuevo papa es mucho más liberal.

"Hace un par de meses por ejemplo aprobó expresamente que una pareja de homosexuales adoptara un niño. Tiene contacto con sacerdotes que han sido repudiados por la iglesia oficial por haberse casado. Y, lo más importante, es que no se ha dejado apartar de su convicción de que tenemos que estar del lado de los pobres", señala el exsacerdote.

Boff rechaza también las acusaciones que han surgido contra Bergoglio según las cuales no dio suficiente apoyo en su momento a dos jesuitas que estuvieron presos durante la dictadura militar argentina.

"Conozco las acusaciones y creo lo que dice el Premio Nobel de la Paz Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, que como opositor al régimen militar estuvo preso y fue torturado. Hubo obispos que fueron cómplices de la dictadura pero Bergoglio no estaba entre ellos", indica.

"Hasta ahora, no hay indicios claros de un comportamiento censurable. Por el contrario, él escondió y salvó a muchos sacerdotes perseguidos. Conocí a Orlando Yorio, uno de los jesuitas que se supone que fueron traicionados por Bergoglio y nunca formuló ante mí tales acusaciones", agrega Boff. (RD/Agencias)
