Our
compañero
and
friend Francisco González Aruca dies of a heart attack
Pedro Rodríguez Medina / Combate News
A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.
Who was Aruca? It’s very simple to know who he was… I will use his own
views to introduce him to you:
“… In general, the Miami media
treats these terrorists as if they were patriots...”
“I’ve said hotter things in other interviews…”
“We’ve got a pretty large audience; now that’s what worries them…”
“I will continue to be a serious and profound critic till the last day
of my life”, journalist and director of the Miami-based station Radio
Progreso Alternativa said last Thursday March 2 in reply to critical
comments leveled at him the day before in Miami TV Channel 41’s program
“A mano limpia”, hosted by journalist Oscar Haza.
Radio Progreso Alternativa broadcasts “Ayer en Miami”, one of only two
alternative programs in Miami, home to most Cuban-American right-wing
groups…
Progreso Weekly reproduces herein, word for word, everything that
our colleague Francisco Aruca said:
In short, I have no intention of devoting too much time to
worthless things, but yesterday a TV program spent a certain number of
minutes speaking about Francisco González Aruca. I don’t care; it
doesn’t bother me at all. Several people had been calling me for more
than 24 hours before the broadcast, which had been announced the
previous day. The night before last they had said, ‘Tomorrow we are
going to cover that topic, addressed by the Cuban program Mesa Redonda,
in which Aruca made some statements’.
Needless to say, several people called me, including journalists for
whom I have the highest regard, to ask me if I knew, and sure enough, I
had heard by then. So I told them what I’m going to tell you now in a
nutshell. Well, I guess the main topic of the program will be different,
for what I said on the Mesa Redonda was nothing to out of this world,
just things I have said in my program and in the same way I have.
Indeed, I got a call from the program Mesa Redonda in Cuba with only one
general question: ‘Do you think there is a link between the Miami media
and the terrorists?’, and my answer was the same you have heard from me
here in the past: of course there’s a link, I said, in the sense that in
general the Miami media treat and defend those terrorists as if they
were patriots. And by so doing, they certainly contribute to this
abnormal atmosphere of fear of violence that pervades this city.
I said more, I said more, and part of it made it to that quotation that
was aired by the TV program. I said that not only terrorists but many
other people here are treated as patriots, as prominent and important
figures who spend most of the time implementing narrow-minded agendas
and denying other people their right to express their opinions, and all
of that contributes to fuel the atmosphere we have in Miami today.
That’s basically what I said. I’ve said hotter things in other
interviews. What’s more, I’ve said it just the way I’ve said it here.
Those who watched the program probably noticed that they can’t say I
mentioned any names, for I didn’t. As you know, I try very hard to not
mention any names. I’ve always said that what really matters is not the
saint, but the miracle and what is going on, and I do it mostly because
I would find it very upsetting if I ended up doing the same mediocrities
and barbarities we see in this town, and I will continue to be a serious
and profound critic of the mediocrities that we see in this town till
the last day of my life. But the best way to criticize is to avoid
copying what others do, so I act very much according to the way I think.
Therefore, I said it the same way I say it almost every time in this
program, without mentioning any names or anything, so...
And it’s true, they only gave me a couple of minutes. Let’s be
honest, they didn’t have a lot to do. The terms they used to refer to me
were: “He thinks he’s Cato, a censor of the Miami media”. Well, don’t
give me any nicknames, ‘cause they will stick to me, and I’ve had a few.
I’m no censor of the Miami media, but an alternative means. Obviously,
what happens is that we’ve got a pretty large audience. Now that’s what
worries them. And that audience even includes people who don’t agree
with our opinions, a sign that even if our listeners disagree with us
they know we give them very good information that they don’t find
anywhere else, because we don’t use wrong or bad means or methods but
reliable sources… Sometimes we find information in little-known media
that we consider as valid, but we choose much more well-known media to
spread it and inspire even greater confidence in those who listen to and
count on our program to keep up with events. And they know that we have
a large audience, and above all else an audience that may disagree with
us but have enough respect for our program to pay attention to it.
What’s more, I told those friends who called me 24 hours before to ask
me if I knew what was coming that I did, and asked them if they knew why
the program was being announced.
Why? Because they need publicity and they know what to say in their
program: “Tomorrow we will let you know what Francisco Aruca said”.
Since I’m not there in person –and I have made it quite clear to them
that I won’t until things change around here, because I don’t like
half-measures– they know the stir that saying, “Tomorrow you will hear
Aruca” will cause out there. That’s why they made that announcement. I
told them they had nothing, since I know what I had said, and it was one
of the most boring interviews I’ve ever had, for reasons that I’ll tell
to whoever wants to know: they woke me up in the middle of my nap, for
that specific day I had gotten up very early to prepare my program.
So I’m not a censor, but an alternative media. But they’re the ones who
speak best of the Miami press, radio and TV and their mediocrity. If it
weren’t for that, our audience would be a lot smaller, including people
who I’m sure would rather I didn’t exist, and yet they listen to us.
Why? Simply because these people’s mediocrity is plain to see! Think
about it: where’s a columnist who writes for the Herald in Spanish or
English that states differing opinions about certain topics –Cuba, the
power of the right-wing Cuban-Americans, and lately Venezuela? There’s
none. It’s as simple as that.
Where’s a radio or TV program that does so, barring alternative ones
like this one? There’s none. Therefore, gentlemen, make no mistake.
People know that there’s neither enough diversity and professionalism
nor respect for the variety of opinions that a market economy and a
representative democracy are supposed to have based on the rights
guaranteed by this Constitution. And one of the guests went even so far
as to say that Aruca’s work is evidence of tolerance.
Aruca’s work, much like that of other alternative programs,
proves that the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution are still in
place, and yet we are still being funded by just one sector of the
industry that offers trips to Cuba. Why? Because the others are scared!
That’s something any sensible person can understand. I don’t want to say
anything else; I just wanted a few minutes to reply.
Every time I’m interviewed, whether on the Mesa Redonda or any other
program –and I frequently am, here and in other countries– I say the
same things I’ve said in this program. And if there’s a hope I still
hold out is that one day people, and particularly the most disadvantaged
sectors of the Cuban community, will realize that the worst thing in
their lives here is that there are not enough serious, alternative
media, something essential in this kind of society and that all our
mainstream media do –be they, as I said, press, radio or TV– is
immortalize the mediocrity that prevails in Southern Florida and becomes
manifest in the multiple scandals that come to light now and then. It’s
impossible to defend people’s interests when the media fail to do their
job. This society is designed to be like that, and when the existing
powerful media fail to do so, other media must take over. I wish people
would realize that what we do is useful for them even if they disagree
with us. That’s how this society in which I live has been conceived, and
any journalist who knows his trade and had a vocation for journalism
knows that when all is said and done the role of a journalist is very
clear: tell the powers that be the truth.
What is dangerous to any society is not the poor devils with no means of
support but power, which can be used to do good or evil. One of the
media’s roles is to tell the powers that be the truth and say, “You’re
wrong about this or that”. That’s exactly what they don’t do in Miami.
Here they spend all day telling the “truth”, between quotation marks in
this case, because what they say is not the truth but their views, and
to what powers that be? To those in Cuba! But hey, Fidel Castro is not
in power in Miami.
The power in Miami is in the hands of the media I’m talking about and
represented by politicians who are being elected without having any
contenders and by the leaders, elected and otherwise, that keep taking
control of the local governments and give rise to no end of scandals.
Those are the powers that be here, and the media’s role is to be on
their case at all times. But mind you, what happens here is exactly the
opposite: they leave the powers that be alone, both at national, local
and federal level –they’re all close allies– to say nothing of all the
millions they send down here. And in the meantime, it’s the people who
pay the piper.

“He tenido entrevistas donde he dicho cosas más calientes…”
Francisco Aruca.
Aruca. No me preocupa, no me molesta nada.
Aruca salió a hacer declaraciones”.
He tenido
No tenían
mucho qué hacer, vamos a hablar claro.
“Mañana vamos a tener a Aruca”.
No existe.
No
existen.
opiniones ¿a qué poder?
