Alarcón ejerció su derecho al voto. Alarcón recordó que aquellos luchadores independentistas elegían a sus líderes en plena guerra, sin que mediaran el dinero, los partidos y las grandes campañas políticas. A una pregunta de Granma sobre los retos de la nueva Legislatura, el parlamentario respondió que el próximo quinquenio va a ser clave en la adopción de normas legislativas, legales y administrativas para llevar a cabo el proceso de perfeccionamiento de nuestra sociedad. Quien ha sido presidente de la Asamblea Nacional por dos décadas, solamente tuvo un consejo para los nuevos miembros del Parlamento: tener siempre presente el carácter genuinamente popular del sistema democrático cubano y no perder la vinculación con las personas que representan. Por eso —dijo— son tan importantes estas fiestas electorales y que los candidatos sean arropados con el respaldo de la gente, cuya participación real va desde la inscripción de los electores hasta el conteo de los votos. Alarcón resaltó que la actual candidatura refleja la diversidad de la sociedad cubana y añadió que los jóvenes, que a lo largo de estos años se han incorporado a la Asamblea, demuestran la necesidad de la renovación y, al mismo tiempo, de la continuidad. Precisó que jamás se ha aprobado una sola ley sin que hayan opinado antes miles de ciudadanos en reuniones abiertas. Se refirió a los procesos de debate y consultas populares que anteceden a cada medida, y citó al respecto las palabras de José Martí sobre discutir sin tapujos y sin temor, pero con un solo pecho, un solo corazón. Ahora se aproxima un gran debate nacional para que los ciudadanos opinen libremente sobre el nuevo Código de Trabajo.
