Jose Martí’s Free and Prosperous Homeland
Since its origins Socialism had the ethical premise of fighting against
human poverty, both material and spiritual, as well as against unfairly
distributed or illegitimately acquired wealth, but not against wealth
itself.

“Before abandoning the
endeavor of making the homeland free and prosperous, the sea to the
South will meet the sea to the North and a serpent shall emerge from an
eagle’s egg”
Jose Martí, lecture at Steck Hall, New York, January 24, 1880.
I was born in the fields surrounding a small batey [small
village around a sugar mill] in the northern boundary between Camagüey
and Oriente provinces, in October 1971, when the Cuban Revolution was
already 12 years old. It was a tough year, as were most of the years in
a revolution that refused to surrender when the hopes that it could be
“just another upheaval” collapsed and the enemies of the country
believed it was time to suffocate it. The social tasks undertaken by the
new process in the area of free public health for all managed to
miraculously save the life of a weak and premature baby. I had to
remain in an incubator receiving the intensive care of attentive doctors
and nurses for a long period until I survived.
My young mother -17 years of age- was a rural school teacher. My father
was an agricultural worker. My house was always full of books and needs.
What I am, and will be, I owe to the deeply humane work of the
Revolution and its men and women. The Revolution is not an abstraction:
it has faces and voices, it has names that will always have a place at
our table and loving altars in our hearts as Jose Martí pledged for the
founding fathers of the nation.
Fifty years in history are but a sigh in the vastness of centuries for a
country that has been in the last 500 years –since the arrival of the
Spanish conquistadores to the present- 400 years as a colony of Spain
and another 60 a Yankee neo-colony. It has not been for long that we
have been ruling ourselves: only since the Revolution triumphed in
January 1959. This is why Fidel has rightly named “learning mistakes”
those errors made in the mare magnum of pressures the
Revolutionary government has found itself immersed in after inheriting
four and a half centuries of foreign exploitation and the external
pressures coming from those who exploited us in the past and wish to
suffocate us in the present. Some of these mistakes, of course, are made
by the men who carry out the tasks; they are more than the men who
foresee and lead.
On the other hand, fifty years in a human life are more than half
a lifetime and this must be taken into account by those who represent
with their names and actions in any place or time this Revolution
inspired by the highest ethical and humane principles known by human
society in our times. Rightly so, Fidel said as well, “we have created a
Revolution larger than life, larger than ourselves.” Nobody, young or
old, has the right to feel above “the Revolution of the humble, for the
humble and by the humble” for which thousands of men –mostly young-
marched ready to die in the sands of Playa Girón, in April 1961. There,
many gave their precious lives fighting the haters of this world.
A prosperous homeland of prosperous and generous citizens
All these years, we Cubans have done many things in order to create and
maintain an independent homeland free from foreign intervention, both in
the physical space that supports the country as in the cultural space
that makes it up, from the political to the spiritual. And Cuba is once
and for ever free, independent and sovereign. However, and despite all
our efforts –many of which were poorly organized and others even more
poorly implemented- and with the impact of all the permanent obstacles
and ambushes of the powerful external forces that do not wish us to move
forward, we have not yet managed to build the prosperous homeland the
Apostle dreamed of.
We are responsible for our national and individual destinies. Just as
the national dignity is but the sum of the personal dignities of each
member of society, there would not be a homeland without the patriots
that feel, suffer and honor it with their actions and lives; and there
would not be a prosperous homeland without prosperous citizens. We must
abide by the principle “with all, for the good of all” expressed by
Martí. This only excludes those who –in his view- wish to see or accept
Cuba submitted to a foreign power.
Sometimes it seems as if we
individually feel a natural rejection toward riches and that having
properties is equal to selfishness and evil. In reality the biological
instincts of survival are more evident in destitute persons with little
opportunity to satisfy basic natural needs like eating, dressing and
finding a shelter. This was established by Karl Marx –the Prometheus of
Treveris, as Engels called him. Likewise, it would seem that being
poor is equal to being humble and therefore poverty, not humbleness
would be equivalent to virtue. Poverty is neither virtue nor vice, but
merely a misfortune and it should be a human commitment to strive for
extracting oneself from it and help others to do the same. Humbleness is
an attitude towards life and not a result of the size of the purse;
consequently it can be found in certain persons regardless of the
prosperity they enjoy or the precariousness they suffer from.
Since its origins, socialism has upheld the ethical principle of
fighting against human material and spiritual poverty and also against
material wealth that is unfairly distributed or illicitly acquired, but
not against wealth itself. We will always have to fight against unjustly
acquired riches as against egalitarianism, also unjust, which protects
the lazy and discourages the industrious.
“To have is no sign of evil, while to have not is no token of virtue”
said the Troubadour wisely. We can find sublime examples of prosperous
and generous men and women in our own history, perhaps as many as there
are of poor and mean-spirited individuals who, overwhelmed by their
appetites and devoid of culture and learning to restrain them, driven
only by their instincts, have succumbed to the lowest human passions and
committed the most horrendous crimes against the Homeland and its
children.
That is why I jumped for joy when at the closing session of the last
National Assembly, presided over by the same banners of Yara and
Guaimaro, I heard Raul saying
“We
consider that
the updating of the Cuban
economic model, after
the initial steps of
removing bans and other
obstacles to
the development of productive
forces, marches steadily
and begins to delve into
broader, deeper and more complex issues, based
on the premise that
everything we do is aimed at
the preservation and
development of a socialist,
sustainable and prosperous
Cuba, the only guarantee of the independence
and national sovereignty
won by generations of
our countrymen in
more than 144 years of
struggle.”
All those who obstruct the new economic policy that updates and defends
socialism and the Cuban nation must be clearly identified and watched
closely in order to save whoever wishes to be saved with the homeland,
and lay aside – without lessening their dignity- those who perhaps with
a misconceived “good faith” wish to save themselves at the expense of
the nation or would prefer to go down with her.
It is suicidal to be afraid of the liberation of productive forces in a
revolution that has been keen on developing and strengthening them from
the outset. To be wary of the accumulation of legally acquired wealth by
those who work with their hands or with their intellect under the
assumption that prosperity generates selfishness is to ignore Marti’s
assertion that “being good is the only way of being happy. To be
cultured is the only way to be free. But generally, human nature
requires being prosperous to be good.”
Let each of us take up our
corresponding portion of duty for the Homeland and the family -our small
homeland-, and make the best use of the enormous wealth of knowledge,
kindness and ingeniousness that we have accumulated through all these
years thanks to the Revolution we Cubans made for ourselves and have
defended for more than half a century against all perils. It would be
one of the best ways to honor – in the 160th anniversary of
his birth- the memory of that far sighted man who taught us that
“patriotism is a holy duty when you struggle to make the Homeland a
place where men may live more happily”.

a algún poder extranjero.
hombres».
