Holocaust Victims Remembered in Poland
A
CubaNews translation by Sean Joseph Clancy. Edited by Walter
Lippmann.
Varsovia , January 27—This Sunday politicians, religious leaders
and survivors of Nazi extermination commemorated International
Holocaust Remembrance Day with solemn prayers and renewed
warnings that such horrors must never again be allowed to occur.
OVER
THE DOOR OF THE AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP WHERE MORE THAN A
MILLION PERISHED, THE SIGN READS "WORK WILL SET YOU FREE".
AP reports that ceremonies were held at various locations
including the German Auschwitz – Birkenau extermination camp in
southern Poland where at least 1.1 million people were killed by
fascists.
Speaking from a window overlooking St. Peters Square in the
Vatican, Pope Benedict XV1 warned that humanity must always be
watchful to ensure that racist-related tragedies are never
repeated.
A wave of indignation followed former Italian Prime Minister
Silvio Berlusconi’s remarks praising fascist dictator Benito
Mussolini who said “despite the fact that he passed racist laws
that principally persecuted Jews, he also did some good things”
During a ceremony to mark the date in Milan, Berlusconi also
defended Mussolini’s alliance with Hitler saying that “he
perhaps thought it would be best to be with side who would win
the war”.
In 2005 The United Nations decreed that January 27th of every
year would be the day that Holocaust victims were to be
remembered because on that date in 1945, Soviet troops liberated
Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi extermination camp.
