THE CUBAN EXPERIENCE COULD HELP THE UNITED STATES

It is a paradox, but the considerable survival experience Cubans have gained from the blockade imposed on them by the US government for more than half a century with the worst genocidal intentions, could help Americans deal with the total economic collapse forecast for the superpower.

Increasing anxiety has been preying on U.S. citizens since the 2008 crisis. The phenomenon has not been widely reflected in the mainstream media, but alternative independent media have discussed it with strength.

It has even reached Hollywood with the film Hunger Games, a horrifying echo of the fear that extends along the vast geography of the US empire as hints of the predicted debacle become a reality.

Designed for young audiences, this super production presents what could happen in the country after decades of lost wars abroad and internal crises. Extreme poverty makes Americans rebel against the central powers which cruelly repress them. The totalitarian power which emerges from this “victory” is strongly supported by the media which develops new and unimaginable technologies to manipulate the citizens. As a lesson, it  orders each of the 12 districts that make up the nation to chose each year a couple of teenagers between 12 and 18 who must fight each other until all contenders die but one who as the winner will survive. This bloody and diabolical lesson terrifies the citizens who are compelled to watch the battle until its macabre end.

The success of this film has been such that a sequel is already been made of what is believed to become a saga rivaling Harry Potter’s popularity.

The readings are many. Some think the producers are criticizing the totalitarianism of the American powers that be and the role of the media as the second power. Alternative media are already using Hunger Games as a symbol of the decadence at the gates of the present.

From another perspective it is seen as a warning to present day young people not to rebel against the powers that be, because the outcomes would be those described in the film. There are already many video-games in the US urging young people to annihilate others in the most horrible ways.

Today on the World Wide Web there are abundant examples of the fear the US population feels of the total collapse which might come. Some of these come with proposals and ideas about how to be prepared for the dreadful phenomenon that would shake the world, not only the US.

Constant and diverse are the recommendations for communities to get organized so they can deal with the impact of the collapse predicted by the experts. Among the proposed formulas are, for example, those calling Americans to form tribes that would allow them to face the disaster through voluntary cooperation among neighbors; identify and explore alternative water sources; form local cooperatives for food sharing; design barter and exchange systems with the eventual inclusion of a local currency for such operations; put in place local alternative energy systems; organize communal night vigilance bodies; study the organization of communication within the community and with other tribes; create a communal food bank; and organize a local system of medical aid that would support a healthy community.

After the overthrow of Batista’s dictatorship in 1959 and until the present, the Cuban people have had to face deprivations generated by the hostility of the US towards the Revolution; deprivations which have a lot in common with those now threatening the country to the north. These have forced Cubans to develop communal and socialist initiatives that today are part of their solid and stable political system always in a process of renovation and correction.  

The ruthless war with which the US government has punished the disobedience of the Cubans in a hemisphere that was –but no longer is- the US' backyard, provided the island with a lot of experience in affairs related to the struggle for survival. This would perhaps be of use today for their threatened brothers to the North so they can withstand the impact of the economic collapse; a tragedy caused by the same 1% of the US nation that has never wanted to accept Cuba’s real independence.

    EXPERIENCIA CUBANA PODRIA SERVIR A EEUU

Paradójicamente, la considerable experiencia de supervivencia que los cubanos han extraído del bloqueo que les ha sido impuesto por el gobierno de Estados Unidos durante más de medio siglo con la peor intención genocida, pudiera servir a los norteamericanos para enfrentar el colapso total de su economía que se le pronostica a la superpotencia.

Una angustia creciente se ha venido apoderando de buena parte de la ciudadanía de esa nación desde la crisis de 2008 sin ser ello reflejado con amplitud en los medios informativos dominantes, aunque sí lo ha sido, con fuerza, en los medios independientes y alterativos. Pero ya ha llegado incluso a Hollywood, con el filme “Juegos de Hambre” (“Hunger Games”) un escalofriante eco del pavor que se extiende por toda la vasta geografía del imperio estadounidense a medida que se hacen realidad los pronósticos de la debacle.

Dirigida a los auditorios más jóvenes, esta superproducción adelanta lo que podría suceder en ese país al cabo de décadas de guerras perdidas en el exterior y crisis interna. El empobrecimiento extremo lleva a los norteamericanos a rebelarse contra los poderes centrales, que los reprimen sangrientamente. El poder totalitario que surge de esta “victoria” se basa fuertemente en los medios de comunicación que despliegan nuevas e inimaginables tecnologías para manipular a los ciudadanos y ordena como lección a cada uno de los 12 distritos en que dividen a la nación que seleccionen cada año a una pareja de adolescentes entre 12 y 18 años quienes deben luchar entre sí hasta la muerte de todos los contendientes, excepto uno, que será el vencedor y sobrevivirá. Esta sangrienta y diabólica lección aterroriza a los ciudadanos, obligados a ver la batalla hasta el macabro final.

Ha sido tal el éxito de esta película que ya se filma la segunda parte de lo que se estima será una saga que rivalizará con la de Harry Potter en popularidad.

Las lecturas son variadas. Hay quienes estiman que los realizadores critican el totalitarismo de los “powers-that-be” estadounidenses y al papel del ya segundo poder que son los medios informativos. La prensa alternativa emplea “Hunger Games” ya como símbolo de decadencia a las puertas del presente.

Otras lecturas consideran que es una advertencia a los jóvenes de hoy para que no se atrevan a rebelarse contra estos poderes porque los resultados serían los que describe el filme. Proliferan ya en Estados Unidos video-juegos que instan a los jóvenes a aniquilarse entre sí de las más horribles maneras.

En la actualidad, abundan en la red de redes las muestras de pánico en la población estadounidense ante el colapso total que sobrevendría. Algunas, con propuestas e ideas acerca de cómo prepararse para el angustioso fenómeno que conmocionaría al mundo, no solo a Estados Unidos.

Son constantes y diversas las recomendaciones a organizarse comunitariamente para asimilar y sobreponerse al impacto del colapso que los expertos pronostican. Entre las fórmulas que se proponen para este fin están, por ejemplo, las que llaman a los estadounidenses a acometer la formación de tribus que les permitan enfrentar el fenómeno mediante la cooperación voluntaria de vecinos; identificar y explorar fuentes alternativas de agua; organizar jardines productivos colectivos; formar cooperativas alimentarias locales; diseñar sistemas de trueque e intercambios, eventualmente incluyendo una moneda de base local para tales operaciones; prever sistemas locales de energía alternativa; prever un sistema de vigilancia colectiva nocturna a cargo de los propios vecinos; estudiar la organización de las comunicaciones locales y con otras tribus; crear un banco de alimentos comunitario, y organizar un sistema local de asistencia médica que propicie una comunidad saludable.

Los cubanos, desde el derrocamiento de la tiranía de Batista en 1959 hasta hoy, han tenido que enfrentar privaciones inducidas por la hostilidad de Estados Unidos a su revolución que tienen mucho en común con aquellas que ahora amenazan al país norteño. Ello les ha obligado a desarrollar iniciativas comunitarias y socialistas que hoy forman parte integral de su sistema político y social sólido y estable, siempre en proceso de renovación y corrección.

La despiadada guerra con que el gobierno estadounidense ha castigado la desobediencia de los cubanos en un hemisferio que era –pero que ya no es– su traspatio, dotó a la Isla de experiencia suficiente en casi todo lo relativo a la lucha por la supervivencia, algo que pudiera servir ahora a sus amenazados hermanos del norte para resistir el impacto del colapso económico, tragedia cuyo causante es el mismo 1% de la nación estadounidense que nunca ha querido aceptar la independencia real de Cuba.
