Elections
in Cuba: Brief conversation with a very unique candidate

“My despised
audience: Stop throwing pennies, nickels and quarters at me! You are
going to hit me in the eye. Throw instead harmless pieces of paper with
colors and faces, or big numbers; and if they are green, much better!”
(Havana transvestite Lola Montes in a Saturday show at Ramon
Silveiro’s El Mejunje in Villa Clara.)
A CubaNews translation.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.
It is Sunday, October 21st, 2012 (for those who follow the Kabala and
the inverse order of numbers, 21-10-12 is a great combination of astral
digits) and there is a first round of elections in the process of
selection of delegates for the Poder Popular in Cuba [Municipal
Governments]. Every two years, before the renewal of Parliament Members
regulated by Law, Regional Governments are renewed. This time there is
something unusual in the normally peaceful Electoral Office No. 1 of
Circunscripción 5 [Registration District 5] in Caibarién, Villa
Clara province. A confessed homosexual, notorious transvestite,
plenipotentiary transgender; very well known in the municipality for his
human merit, his personal charm and orthodox disdain, as well as the
unprejudiced openness of his preference (displayed as a banner during
all his life) plus a long history in his 48 years of adversities, poor
adaptation, prevalence and discreet triumphs in his homeland, has made
it to the final test that will decide who will represent successfully
his neighborhood during the coming ordinary period of magistracy
selection. The local assembly will attempt again to decide what will
happen on behalf of the Cubans who reside within the regional
perimeters, and form its government with those elected in the zones of
the town.
I write this brief interview a few hours before the results of the
voting are known. Whichever these may be, I think that what happened
with my interviewed so far shows the irreversible nature of the
significant changes taking place in the Island, despite the criteria of
the relentless reformists, the (in)active detractors and other promoters
of the slow or fast development of the transition and insular thinking
as a whole. For the record, I wish to stress my gratitude to this person
who received me in his home, despite all the problems without solution
that hunt him, with the modesty he is popularly admired for and his
personal humbleness. No matter what happens today in the evening, she or
he are already an indisputable victory of the unstoppable
transformations taking place in the essence of the nation, and those
that will certainly follow. Have no doubt about it.
P: Let us begin with the essential: Name, Family name, Place of
birth, Occupation, etc. (For politeness we do not ask the age of a
candidate, but I have inadvertently revealed it before. Besides, it is
in your bio data posted at the Electoral Office. There you impress the
voters with your simple life trajectory).
R:
My name is José Agustín Hernández
González. I’m a nurse specialized in electrocardiograms at the Hospital
Gral. María Escobar
Laredo in Caibarién. I’ve been
working there for 14 years. I started as a cleaning person, later as a
nursing assistant, then as a nurse and now as a trained technician in
this thing I do with other people’s hearts: trying to diagnose failures
before their motor stops. I was born in the former Adela Sugar Factory
(today Heriberto Duquesne), but as a young child when I finished grade
school, I moved with my mother to Sagua La Grande, because my father did
not want to have anything to do with me due to my effeminate manners. My
mother had to steal money from him to feed me and give me something
extra to take for my fortnight at the boarding school. I never wanted to
go home and see him suffer wanting to crush me. He was a man of strong
character. He was tolerant with the other “queers” in the town, but me,
he hated fiercely. Then I went to boarding school in a IPUEC(1)
in San Juan de Los Remedios. I was more grown up and wanted to put some
distance between that unbearable Sugar Factory that gave me no paternity
and me. One day I went in search of the best life experiences I could
find along the way. I always say my father has been my worst enemy… and
I don’t believe this judgment makes me a lower creature. You be the
judge of that in your own way when you meet someone like him.
P: You said the worst… or perhaps he did the best he could in
his time. Who could judge? In matters of the nature of evil you don’t
know how to win or lose when giving scores. One needs to consider the
period when behaviors are judged. But let’s forget about your father who
obviously did not contribute anything to your personal kindness. You
arrived in Caibarién a few years ago. I remember having seen you in the
80’s, confronting the local machos with your stance, and your proud and
irreverent manners; with very high heels, provocative hair styles, and
an affected female-in-heat stride, almost like a mambisa on
horseback. You were something never seen before in a town that prided
itself of having a reduced number of ‘different’ people (or
invertidos [inverted] as they were called at the time) and always
prude in their inter generation relations. How was your arrival in this
port of rough males, mostly seamen or tannery workers, weather beaten by
the sun or alcohol, mostly heterosexual and ignorant of the lexical
existence of words such as “acceptance”, “sexual diversity”, or
“tolerance”? What was their reaction to you? Tell me about it.
R: I had to leave Sagua La Grande really soon -for the reasons
you know- and find residence far from the place of my birth and teenage
years. This was planning for the moment when my mother -and only
provider in the family- was no longer with me (which unfortunately
happened very soon and made stronger my decision to get away from the
cursed places). I had been here before in the late 70’s with my only
aunt -there is always a savior aunt in our lives- one beach afternoon in
a sort of exploration. I was still very young and had no experience. The
local authority immediately picked me up, evicted me almost by force
from the beach area, and prohibited my return. They made me sign an
eviction acceptance document at the desk of the local Policía
Nacional Revolucionaria (PNR). It seems I had made too much fuzz
with my walking and talking manners. But I had not offended or insulted
anyone on purpose. It was not intentional. I was a tall and lean boy,
not the fat person I am now, and I was beautiful, really beautiful. Long
black hair with shiny curls! I wore it loose… It gives me nostalgia just
to think about it. I was so fragile you could think I could break, as
every non- lasting thing of beauty is. Despite of the brevity of my
visit I fell in love with the sea breeze and the smell of the sea, so I
returned -full of determination- on July 12, 1984. I’ll never forget the
date. I returned to live anywhere but near these beautiful shores. (At
the time I thought they were the most beautiful thing in the world). For
28 years I have lived in the outskirts of Caibarién, first at the end of
the pier in Calle 10 (Padre Varela), near the dockyard of the
late Ñico el Puto [Nico the Whore) the funny nickname they gave the nice
drunkard who lived in a shack very similar to this one. If you look at
it is made up of borrowed boards and roof in a miraculous balance. I
have lived in the exact middle of all the poor, unhealthy neighborhoods
of the region. They get flooded with sewage waters when it rains and
there are myriads of ants and roaches. You share your space unwillingly
with hundreds of crabs and mosquitoes, surrounded by dangerous marginal
people and also by humble people, honest despite their poverty. Quite
often you find yourself cooperating, almost inadvertently, with the
homeless that put together their improvised shelter as best they can
with whatever they can find. They are hurting in their habitation
orphanage and try to escape temporarily from an unforeseen displacement
that sometimes lasts too long. Ordinary people in the town have given
vengeful names to these make do settlements. I have named my
neighborhood “Venecia” because of the stinking canals. This latest place
I moved in is known as “Las Aguas Indias” [Indian Waters] which
is a phonetic distortion of the old Yankee West Indians
Company that had its properties right here in Caibarién before 1959.
Today this abandoned square that shelters the landless, depending on the
rise of the tide or the blowing wind, offers refuge to every spontaneous
builder in this sort of “favela”, similar to those in South
America, and makes up a commonwealth of the dispossessed. As to the
local macho men you asked me about, to all those bullies and lava
throwers, I dealt with them with discipline and respect. And despite of
my external “softness” when a punch was necessary to put some bully in
its place there was my fist before my kiss. I was a Physical Education
trainer at school and my built is solid, strong and flexible; lucky me,
because otherwise I might have been lynched. And there would not be
interview for you today or a candidate for my supporters.
P:
Now that you are telling me about your
experiences of rejection and the acceptance of diversity –partial by
most and total by your friends and neighbors- Have you seriously
considered transgender procedures? It is now possible to do so and it
seems that in a foreseeable future it will be fully acceptable. Ah! And
if at some point the law approving same-sex marriage is passed by
Parliament, would you marry your present lover? What do you think about
HSH [men who have sex with other men] associations and their struggle
for social recognition?
R: All my life I have been a woman in thought and action, cruelly
trapped in this male body I did not ask for. With that little thing
there that means nothing to me and I’ve never used for what it was
designed. I use it only to pee. I have never thought of the so called
“opposite sex” in terms of rivalry, or as a yearning. I’ve been a friend
and comrade of great women, and good enemy as well of others that I need
not mention now; it’s not worth it. Both in the hood, and the work
places I’ve been, or in the jolly dressing rooms with my peers, I have
learned to coexist with certain men I respect and respect me by nature
and openness. It’s just reciprocal admiration, nothing else. I’ve done
much better with “homophobes extraordinaire” in recent times. They have
had to lower their heads or abdicate; but there have always been
exceptions: healthy and nice people everywhere. However, the reactionary
majority still follows the tradition of being hostile or pretend to do
so, because of the ingrained upbringing from their rude and illiterate
ancestors. I believe that if my case were processed by those who need
to do so, and at this point of almost half a century of shared life, I
would welcome the surgery that would make me get rid of what is a
nuisance and feel very happy becoming the real Mrs. Adela (that’s what
everybody calls me) finally married to the man I love. I have never felt
like a macho, not even when in my puberty my father made me promise him
I would have a wedding like a normal man and have children in a normal
way in the future. I will only give birth, I told him, when I am a total
woman. That statement cost me a sentence of 4 years in prison between
1980 and 1984, but I only served 2 years and was set free in 1982. Only
for bragging about what I was not. Just for being me. And because of the
nefarious volunteering of information he provided to the PNR to intern
me in a penal facility. In those difficult and unforgettable years, the
organization was hunting for sexual deviates and all kinds of deviates
to put them behind bars. I told the guard that walked me to my cell: if
getting out of here means fulfilling the promise I did not make to that
Neanderthal who is waiting outside for me to repent from being the queen
I am, I’m ready to do life! About men
who have sex with other men, I’m very glad it is so, and that there
are always a few vacant for me. Today I’m crazy about a 21 year
old young man who loves me back and is happy to have me as his partner.
Some stupid and envious persons accuse me of corruption of minors
(legally impossible because he is an adult of 21), but I prefer to serve
baby food than anti-inflammatory drugs or massage.
P: That is, you were in prison for being homosexual? Did they
apply to you the infamous article 72 –still in place (2) - of
the Penal Code about potential danger?
R: Right then and there. And you have no idea how much I had to
struggle inside that cage to maintain my physical integrity and avoid
futile fights that would have increased my prison term. On one occasion
at the Pretensado de Santa Clara, an inmate hit me hard in the face
because I did not want to wash his underwear. But later, with cold
premeditation, I retaliated and hit him in the nose (with a copper pipe
I had borrowed from the prison pluming) so hard that I left him numb
when he attempted to bully me. This served the purpose of getting us
separated. Prison stories are always negative. There they told me that
black people’s noses (fatally, this guy was black) are broken like those
of dogs: with a strong blow and the immediate sight of blood brings them
down, no matter how much of a tough guy they might seem. It worked that
time. I got rid of him and never again I’ve had had a quarrel of that
magnitude. Inside or outside. And let me tell you that I’m famous for my
tongue as a whip.
P: Then, do you know of the book “Hombres sin Mujer”
[Men without Women] by Carlos Montenegro? It is an inventory of those
“racial niceties” in the mid 20th Century in the Cuban
penitentiary wards… which unfortunately are repeated nowadays, as if
time had stopped forever in those dark institutions…
R: I don’t read much, but I would like to read it. I don’t have
much spare time for culture in this difficult present. I admit the inner
landscape must be improved and before old age comes I’ll have to find
the right way to do it. One never really learns what to do to improve
one’s culture. And it is not right to learn from other people’s
experience
P: Without becoming aware you have changed gender in the
interview. I began talking to José Agustín, and it is now Adela who
speaks. How shall I address you from now on?
R: Whichever you like. I have no preference in everyday interaction,
so I will not have it with you, but if you really want to know, call me
Adela, because it is more familiar. Today, every person who came to vote
passed by my little home and asked my real name. They only know me as
ADELA, LA ENFERMERA [Adela, the Nurse], and since in the promotional
photograph I am wearing a black T-shirt, very masculine, without make up
or shine, because I was not allowed cross dressing or ostentation, some
people do not recognize me. I think what you are seeing is what I am,
not that other cross-dressed who posed for the photo. And we are 3
candidates. The other 2 are Party members. The only candidate who, first
of all, aspires to be a female is me. The thing is that I’ve been 28
years leading this unruly CDR as its President and that brands you
whether you like it or not. It makes one famous for endurance. Many find
it difficult to understand my perseverance in the task; so many years
defending what other consider not defendable. My obstinacy is bomb
proof. With a long list of to do’s and frustrations I move from home to
work and vice versa. My mission is to listen to the neighbors. It
doesn’t matter what they say, or what their quarrels are. Trying to
understand their neighborly disputes can sometimes be gratifying. I live
immersed in their constant dissatisfactions and complaints. I also
learned to mobilize them with urgency when it is necessary to assist
other people in distress or involved in the brawls that are quite
frequent. I warned those who proposed me at the candidate nomination
meeting. I told them I was not going to give false expectations if I
made it to represent them at the local government; I would not carry
trivial responses to appease my voters; I would bring here those implied
so they themselves give answers (satisfactory or not) to the electors
and explain their share of impotence in whatever it is they need to
solve concerning the growing demands of this community. And if this is
not possible I will immediately resign, if they don’t resign. I’m tired
of seeing how we are given the run around when they don’t have solutions
to offer. It’s been too much time invested, and too much time wasted.
There is no way back. And hope has its limits.
P:
Adela, when I first met you, you were
driving a tractor at the Combinado textil Desembarco del Granma,
in Santa Clara. In those years the factory was in accelerated
construction stage. And you were hauling a wagon with an army of loud
masons, plumbers, carpenters, etc. How was it that having trained as a
nurse you had to work as a driver in one of the toughest places around?
R: Well, I went to school in Sagua, the Lidia Doce School,
but first I had completed junior high school in Remedios. My nursing
training took 3 years before graduation. Those years I spent miserably,
being relegated because of my notoriety, and almost died of boredom. It
was my destiny. When I came out of prison, my options had changed. I
could not practice what I liked and for what I had been trained. I had
to accept what was available for an ex convict like me. Driving a heavy
machine or a tram was not too bad, and did not make a big difference.
Posing for my workmates with a plastic bow in my hair in the morning was
not a problem either, provided it was all kept within the boundaries of
camaraderie. I saw no reason to avoid healthy entertainment. We all
laughed and were happy. They yelled their obscenities in the wagon and I
dragged them along. They didn´t dare talk about it in their homes; about
the good times we had at work. But they were usually very happy. And
when we met again on Mondays to talk about what each one had done on the
week end, I would tell them about my gay life as a night transvestite
and they -in confidence- would tell me about their problems. Sometimes I
even gave them advice when they were about to lose a year long
relationship for misunderstandings or cheating. I was like a young
mother and a sister to all of them…Some even helped me understand them
better. You don’t have the faintest idea of how much one learns living
among ordinary and troubled people. We built the Pig Farm in Charco
Hondo. Boyfriends? Of course I had. And they were many. I did not waste
my time. But I had to be very
discreet in these occasional flings, because the bosses kept an eye on
me. They had their instructions to smash me publicly for immorality.
There was the obvious risk of expulsion, but I felt accomplished.
Emotionally I enjoyed times of intense love and hatred; those that most
mortals have only lived in their dreams… Others may call these
nightmares. I prefer to call them simply “my life experience”.
P: You told me you could not devote fully to cross dressing in the
90’s. And that after three years of work at the old hospital in Santa
Clara as an assistant you discovered that alternative show business was
more lucrative for survival than healing patients. Did that view change
when you gave it up later?
R:
Yes. Dealing with patients is not the
same as dealing with people who are having fun with a cabaret show.
These are two different concepts of usefulness. The money I got from one
and the other was far different and did not really satisfy me. I made
more money cross-dressing, and the visitors -national or foreign- gave
me tips and promises. In the hospital environment, one gets used to the
grateful smile of a patient and its relatives. And that is all, because
we are not allowed to accept presents or bribes for an unintentional
“better” service. We all know the salaries in the country are symbolic;
they are not enough to improve this shack where I live. A couple of
times it has collapsed, destroyed by the rain and winds from cold fronts
and hurricanes. Salaries are barely enough to eat poorly. By the way,
now that I’m complaining to you about my present and past misadventures,
I discover that I do not know what the hell they did in the end at the
Dirección Municipal de la Vivienda, with the file of the
construction they approved for me after one of those terrible total
collapses. They filed it long ago and gave the land lot I had been
assigned to someone else who was seemingly more important than I. But
then again: let it be in their conscience. (If these paper pushing
officials have remorse, which I doubt)
P: You were telling me you had been 28 years presiding your CDR.
We could read that in your bio data at the Voting Center. The CDR is the
oldest grassroots organization in the country. There you set an example
with 118 voluntary blood donations for people you don’t even know, whose
lives were saved because of your noble gesture. Is it true you were
forbidden to continue donating blood at the Blood Banks? Was this to
preserve your health?
R: Not to protect my health. Believe it as they told you. The
Director of the Blood Bank in the hospital where I work, a Dr. Pedro
Julio Idontknowwhat, a famous and well read epidemiologist, adamantly
informed me a few years ago, when I was ready to make my donation 119
–hoping to reach 120 (because that, in terms of years of life, was the
aspiration of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz; and with that
attainable number my workmate Tony and I wanted to salute his
anniversary), of a mysterious Resolution of the Ministry that from that
moment on would not accept anonymous donations if the volunteers were in
fact, or were believed to be, homosexual. I asked what resolution it was
and what were its contents to exclude us from entering the premises, but
got no answer. The uncertainty was not supposed to exclude lesbians that
I believe are homo just as we are. We got silence for all reply. I don’t
understand and never will why my blood today is more dangerous, more
volatile and cheaper than that of the rest of the humans around me and
among which I coexist healthily. That is (was) a colossal display of
homophobia with no solid foundation. It was an unexplained and horrible
action. Not all of us are promiscuous and potential HIV carriers
(4). This is easily detected with the relevant tests. I thought
that the Public Health sector being as it is the most sensitive, healing
and vulnerable to those ancient backward absurd prejudices would have
escaped; but as you can see, it was not as I expected; at least not yet.
There is still a lot of throwaway baggage in the sector where I work, as
in the rest of society. We would really like to take off once and for
all. This makes me sad…and flattens me. Makes doubt the premises.
P: Did any official from the Administration or the Party listen
to your concerns after this unfair decision that excluded only
homosexuals from donating their blood to others who needed it, or would
need it in a near future? Was the issue non appealable?
R:
The day after the sad incident, a meeting of the Municipal Council was
in session and I waited to meet Víctor Ramos who at the time was the
Secretary of the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) in the city. He
told me in front of all the Council members he would look into the
matter, and said they didn’t understand what had happened. He also said
he would consult the then PCC Provincial Secretary in Villa Clara Miguel
Díaz Canel. He never did; or if he did and they discussed the issue, I
was never given an explanation. I still ignore the secret reasons for
that unfair decision, and for the permanent avoidance of my person – and
of Tony who was equally offended- that resulted as a consequence. When I
was certain that silence would prevail, I asked the Secretary to use his
absolute power to place a ship at the pier to embark all the known
homosexuals that could not find peace or understanding in their own
country. That we would all go to Miami to air our anger with the enemies
–also homophobes- that despise us just like the ones in our Island, but
that at least had hard currency in their hands and would make it easy
for us to grab it. Then we would live better our marked destiny. Let me
add a detail: after that, I have never tried to donate anything. I’m not
interested anymore. They killed my desire and broke my determination
with that stupid norm.
P: That injustice, born out of despise, made you feel like a
second class citizen?
R: What do you think? I felt like a fifth class person in a fifth
class world! A second class would have been a luxury. As simple as that.
P: However, on May 1st., 1997, in a display of
patriotism you and another famous transvestite known as La Loba (5)
(who today runs the Sectorial de Cultura as deputy
director) paraded – side by side with sweaty workers and peasants of the
locality- and passed by the Municipal Box with a colorful poster that
read, to everybody’s surprise: “We are happy here!!” Do you remember
your cross- dressing days as “Lucero” your stage name?
R: Of course I remember. And the way people looked at us because
of our daring. Look at this photo where we are together. I’m going to
let you copy it, despite of the fact that it is not in good condition,
because it is a memento of our time with the company of cross-dressers
run by Carmen Moreno, the radio director. In the photo with me is
Leonardito; that is his real name. Those were really memorable times.
People packed the theatres to see us perform. There is nothing left of
that. There are no more spaces; only old memories. Not even the famous
Teatro Cervantes with its four stories, or the Cine Cinema of 2 remain.
The jungle swallowed them, as in La Voragine (6).
P: You have talked before about pain and the need to move on. How
have you fared through the bitter experience left by the generational
intolerance we know about?
R:
What can I say? With all the people
that still believe such things and feel superior just because their
sexual preferences are “normal”; and look at you as if you were an alien
that disturbs their purity, and laugh at our different stance and
determination. I have been surprised to see, months later, some of these
very same people in deep sorrow in front of me at the Hospital, lying in
a stretcher that barely holds them, pale with death fluttering around
them, worried, and maybe ashamed of their former behavior; but just
inside because they express nothing, no visible change when they had to
come to me so I can warn them about a possible infarct. They have cried
in silence, not looking at me; I don’t mind if they were repentant or
not while they are no longer immune to fragility, or while I commend
them in my prayers to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, and
Oshún so they work together and perform the miracle of saving them
from impending death and make them recover soon. It has been my
satisfaction to try to help them; to give them a hug without touching
them. They will never know of my silent prayers, and this will always be
my greatest sorrow. These are little things that remain unsaid because
of human incomprehension. Sometimes they fill me with satisfaction for
having done my duty, mainly because it is the right thing to do. Some
other times, they make me angry and bring out the bad feelings I have
inside.
P: Considering your long history of participation in grassroots
organizations and your relevant role for almost three decades in the
CDR’s (3) and as area coordinator of voluntary blood donors,
Have you been nominated to join the Federación de Mujeres Cubanas?
Do you know all that CENESEX has done in terms of advancement of
these issues with girls like you who have joined the organization
founded by Vilma Espín?
R: I have heard about these girls, former boys whose sex was
changed; but living and struggling in a zone like this where I reside,
where sewer water floods the shacks and everything you own goes to hell
when the surrounding swamps overflow; we don’t have bathrooms or toilets
in our shacks; we do our things in buckets and throw them to a common
ditch; we shower as we can inside our homes and live in this
asphyxiating dampness, with the risk of diseases, together with the
destructive rain, the semi clandestine power lines you have to check
permanently because they are in poor condition and because you need to
protect yourself from power stealing and unexpected excessive payment at
the end of the month; drinking water that sometimes does not reach the
only tap in the community when there is a shortage –think of the queuing
to get drinking water. Think of the promiscuity, the loud music, the
intimate noises unwillingly shared by all in a colossal, burning,
never-ending holler. This is soon forgotten when it is time to party,
and with any excuse we come out to dance as if nothing happened. Even if
the night before we had thrown things and insults at each other and
threatened to kill each other with no further consequence. It is the
lack of privacy here that is the root of all evil; but fortunately we
still have not had dangerous infections –as they had in other circuits-
like cholera or hemorrhagic dengue. And there are many children in
neighboring houses that walk barefoot. I personally do not have the
resources to go to Havana and experience the transgender process. My
place is here; to defend these people who have nothing and will never
have anything just like me from all the inclemency from heaven and
earth. My task is to run around the neighborhood when something bad
happens –quite frequently by the way- at whatever time it happens and
try to solve it anyway possible; even to face the frequent police
incursions chasing delinquents on the run that hide in the surrounding
bushes and the marginality where we live. And continue leading my
neighbors so that the inevitable passing is ameliorated, or less tense;
brief and less heavy. It all depends on who takes responsibility for the
solutions. It is a dream in grand scale…to leave this hell hole some
day. As to become a member of the FMC, well, perfect, I’ll just need
another identity and another membership fee.
P: To conclude, how do you see this adventure in social leadership
that puts you in the tight rope again?
R: It is a great challenge to be able to comply with the demands.
My two opponents in the election are Party members –as I told you- they
have an impressive curriculum. One of them has been in the Poder Popular
for a long time in charge of Sports, Culture and Recreation. He knows
his job, they say. The other comrade has been in charge of gastronomy,
transportation and bread production in the municipality. They are both
university graduates, with great prestige and they work together, they
help each other to solve their problems. As you can see I have no other
backing except from the common people, my healed or grateful patients,
my unconditional friends (sometimes dangerous) and my poor voters who
adore me as I love them. Love them enough to fight with all I’ve got for
their future welfare and inclusive reciprocity with no exceptions. The
ballots will say the word after 6 pm. Let’s leave the results till the
morning and we’ll see what happens.
***********************************************************************
Postcript:
Today, Monday, October 22, early in the morning we learned nobody got
the 50% plus one required to be elected. It comes to mind that each of
the other two candidates hold a vice-presidency in the municipal
government and only one of them barely reached 150 votes in the
election. It is interesting to find out that the two officials relegated
by our heroine don’t need to be re-elected to keep their postings. No
vice-presidency requires it. These are non-elected postings. This
District is the only one that has to go to a second electoral round on
the 29th. However, José Agustín got the most votes (240 of a
total of 657 registered voters for a 36%). We will now have to wait
until next Sunday to define who will become the new candidate.
***********************************************************************
Last Postcript:
We had to wait two Sundays instead of only one. Hurricane Sandy put the
area on alert and delayed everything in Cuba. Finnally today, November 4th,
2012, the aspiration of the majority in the two Voting Offices in
Caibarién’s District 5 has become fact: ADELA was elected CANDIDATE. She
defeated her opponent by a margin of almost 100 votes (270 vs. 180). The
street conga that was ready in her “Venecia” jumped at the surprise and
started playing.

trayectoria).
R: Me llamo José Agustín Hernández González. Soy enfermero
prohibió volver a pisarla.
He vivido en
improvisados asentamientos. He llamado yo a mi vecindario “Venecia”.
contrario, me habrían linchado.
No he considerado al supuesto
He sido amiga y
iguales.
O a administrar antiinflamatorios.
R: Como quieras. No
trabajo y viceversa. Mi misión es escuchar al vecindario. No importa lo
que digan, ni porqué se fajen. Tratar de entenderlo en sus porfías y
trifulcas vecinales suele resultar a menudo enaltecedor.
ayudaron a comprenderlos mejor.
Yo he preferido designarles, simplemente, como “mi experiencia vital”.
Julio nosequé, epidemiólogo él famoso e instruído, me informó rampante,
y no obtuve respuesta.
entristece…y me achanta.
R: ¿Qué me dices?
Me he
Y a seguir liderando a mis vecinos
enfermos sanados o agradecidos, mis amistades incondicionales (muchas

tocar.
