Puerto Rico chooses statehood

San Juan, November 7.– Most Puerto Ricans leaned toward a change of their status as a Free Associated State (FAS) to become the 51st state of the Union, according to the results of a referendum held this Tuesday in parallel to the national election.
The State Elections Commission (SEC) announced Wednesday that 53.99% of the citizens opted to end the present political condition, while statehood (annexation to the U.S.) earned 61.15% of the votes, EFE reported.
In a nonbinding referendum, Puerto Ricans answered two questions: first, whether or not they wanted to continue with the present form of status, something never before asked in such terms; and second, those who answered “no” to the first one were to choose among the options of independence, annexation or Sovereign FAS, a barely clear alternative understood as the outcome of a union of equals.
For the first time in history, annexation received the highest number of votes. The FAS option had been the winner in the previous plebiscites of 1967, 1993 and 1998.
Moreover, SEC confirmed Popular Democratic Party (PDP) president Alejandro García Padilla, who is in favor of keeping the current model –unlike outgoing governor Luis Fortuño, the New Progressive Party leader who advocates statehood– as the governor-elect.
Several analysts agree that García Padilla’s election is at odds with the results of the referendum.
As they celebrated his victory, the PPD president told his followers he will see into the matter together with the U.S., without going into details about the steps to be taken in order to put it on the table.

Puerto Rico se pronuncia por la estadidad
SAN JUAN, 7 de noviembre.— La mayoría de los puertorriqueños se pronunciaron a favor de cambiar su estatus de Estado Libre Asociado (ELA) y convertirse en el estado número 51 de la Unión, según los resultados del plebiscito realizado paralelamente a las elecciones de este martes.
La Comisión Estatal de Elecciones (CEE) divulgó este miércoles que la opción de acabar con el modelo político actual alcanzó el 53,99 % del apoyo popular y la de buscar la anexión (estadidad) a Estados Unidos se hizo con el 61,15 % del voto, informa EFE.
En la consulta no vinculante, los boricuas respondieron a dos preguntas: la primera un "sí" o un "no" a mantener el estatus actual, algo que nunca antes se había planteado así. La segunda, que en caso de haber contestado "no", debían elegir entre las opciones de independencia, anexión o Estado Libre Asociado Soberano, una fórmula sin definición clara que se entiende como el resultado de una unión entre iguales.
Por primera vez en la historia, la anexión obtuvo la mayor cantidad de sufragios. En las consultas anteriores de 1967, 1993 y 1998, triunfó la opción de ELA.
Por otra parte, la CEE confirmó que Alejandro García Padilla se convertirá en el nuevo gobernador de Puerto Rico al frente del Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), que favorece la continuidad del modelo actual y no la anexión, respaldada por el gobernador saliente Luis Fortuño, del Partido Nuevo Progresista.
Varios analistas coincidieron en que la elección de García Padilla entra en cierta contradicción con los resultados del referéndum.
El líder del PPD dijo a sus seguidores durante la celebración del triunfo que habrá que atender el asunto, aunque no dio detalles concretos de los pasos que seguirá para abordar el asunto con Estados Unidos.
