Across the Mirror

While society discusses whether the family is ready to reconsider prejudice related to sexual preferences, artists make theirs the conflicts derived from free orientation and provide a different perspective.

Grant your spirit the practice of doubt and your heart that of tolerance.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Literature always talks of the infrequent. Almost no writer risks telling an ordinary everyday story where what he tells does not go beyond a common dimension.

This is the idea championed by Cuban novelist and essayist Alberto Garrandés, responsible for the anthology of homoerotic short stories Instrucciones para cruzar el espejo [
Instructions to Go Across the Mirror] (Letras Cubanas, 2011) when interviewed by Sexo Sentido about the relationship between the stories in the book and its homosexual characters.

One of the main challenges when putting together the book was to find a chorus voice that would include all the possible subjects in real life; a voice that came from the main characters as well as from the narrators and authors of the stories in the selection.

The 35 stories tell of characters that cannot be given traditional labels. They make up a queer group and often live in a social and family environment full of anguish, contemplating “with fear the days and years to come”, as says one of the protagonists who very well summarizes it all.

For Garrandés, an approach to the concept of homosexuality in literature seems almost impossible. “In the past they said: ‘We are dealing with a pathological problem’. This was the norm and the style until a few years ago, and I believe we are still carrying those conceptions. You still see people who consider it pathological, even when they can watch a TV novella where there are queer characters,” he told us.

Therefore, this anthology also includes the circumstantial expressions of sexuality, when individuals undertake their erotic practices far from any historical and cultural label. “I believe that if an individual, man or woman, is in a circumstantial homoerotic situation, it is society that brands it as gay, and this is wrong, because he or she shouldn’t be branded.”

But while society discusses whether the family is ready to reconsider prejudice related to sexual preferences; in literature, the theatre and the cinema artists take the conflicts derived from free orientation and provide a different perspective.

The author of stories such as Cibersade, Fake and  Salmos paganos (among many others) considers the terms acceptance and tolerance hypocritical because they are evidence of a non-genuine recognition of the phenomenon.

“Within families, for example, the understanding of homosexuality is not a question of culture, or whether you are, or not, a university parent: it is rather a question of human sensitivity.”

“It is neither an issue that the institutions can resolve; it is resolved by a type of education with emphasis on the ethics of the humane, which goes far beyond the ethics of society, family or ideology. If persons do not behave as such, they cannot accept a fact as homosexuality; they cannot assess it or even hold a dialogue with a queer subject,” he explained.

In his view there are details that show how the family is modifying its points of view, but still Art cannot defeat the old mentality: “The role of literature on this is, first, to expose the presence of prejudice and, second, to mobilize people’s awareness: that is why it is written.

“But not all literary dramas sow the same values, or the positive seeds represent a mobilizing factor…In fact, the writer does not necessarily set itself the task of mobilizing human awareness, but the ultimate goal of a literary text should be to make our lives a little bit better.”

PREGUNTA SIN PENA

L.O.: I have a boy friend and we have been together for almost two years. At the beginning we argued a lot, but lately our relation has weakened and I would like to rescue it. I am annoyed at almost any foolish thing and argue a lot. I’ve never reached an orgasm. Could you explain to me what it is? I’m 22 and he is 27.

In your letter I could read the arguing and lack of orgasmic pleasure are constant situations. These are there despite of the moment or the quality of the relation. Perhaps rivalry is hindering the erotic pleasure as well as the quality of the relation you wish to recover.

However, it seems to me you cannot help it and this is how you link yourself to him. The confrontation with this man is taking away some of your satisfaction, not only orgasmic.

Perhaps you still need to discover what makes you vibrate, as much as you need to consider these arguments that are not really about nonsense and are linked to your fantasies, your self-image, your ways of finding gratification and the marks you have from your personal history. All of this is triggered in a conflicting way with the partner you have chosen.

There is not a universal reason that explains the lack or orgasm. This is very specific for each individual and is related to the unique way each of us has to find pleasure in the widest sense, in relation to others and our own body.

Obviously you will have to make certain changes to prevent the definitive collapse of this relationship, if in fact you want to rescue it. But if you cannot help feeling angry and argueing, you may want to consider finding psychological counseling to discover what the essence of your problem is.

Nunca he llegado a un orgasmo.
