Ángel Carromero,
the Spaniard injured in the car crash that took the lives of Oswaldo
Payá and Harold Cepero, is in good condition, albeit he was arrested
yesterday in Bayamo (Cuba) because he was the one driving the vehicle.

As he
himself declared, he missed a traffic signs telling drivers to slow
down, lost control of the car, and went off the road.
Carromero, who sustained a minor head injury, made a
statement to the police after he was discharged from the hospital. He is
in good health and “is not in pain”, Spain’s consul general in Havana
Tomás Rodríguez-Pantoja remarked.
According to Spanish diplomatic sources, Jens Aron
Modig, president of the Swedish Christian Democrat Youth League (KDU),
seems to have been released after he made his statement and returned to
Havana together with Swedish ambassador Caroline Fleetwood. The young
man was scheduled to fly home Tuesday.
Popular Party’s Nuevas Generaciones leader in Madrid
had travelled to the Island as a tourist with Modig and
seized the opportunity to get in touch with the Cuban opposition,
even if they both said at the airport that they had come on vacation to
make sure they would be allowed in Cuba, EFE reports.
Payá and Christian Liberation Movement member Harold
Cepera died in the accident after their car turned over several times.
Carromero and Modig were injured, albeit not seriously in
principle.
Citing the two survivors, Oswaldo Payá’s daughter María
said yesterday that a second car repeatedly rammed and tried to push
off the road the vehicle that the four men were riding.
However, NG has chosen to be cautious until Carromero is
back in Madrid rather than hazard a guess at the circumstances of the
accident.

Según las declaraciones de
Carromero, no llegó a
ver una señal de tráfico de reducción de velocidad.
Por este motivo perdió el control del vehículo y cayó
por un terraplén.
Carromero, que sufrió una herida en la cabeza, prestó declaración ante
la policía tras ser dado de alta en el hospital. Está bien de salud y
"no tiene dolores", según confirmó el cónsul general de España en La
Habana, Tomás Rodríguez-Pantoja.
De acuerdo con las fuentes diplomáticas españolas, al parecer
Jens Aron Modig fue dejado en
libertad tras prestar declaración. Acompañado por la embajadora de
Suecia, Caroline Fleetwood, el joven regresó a la Habana para volar hoy,
martes, a su país.
El dirigente de Nuevas Generaciones del PP en Madrid
había entrado como turista en la isla,
acompañado por el presidente de la Liga de la Juventud Demócrata
Cristiana de Suecia (KDU),
Aron Modig.
Ambos querían aprovechar este desplazamiento para
entablar contactos con la oposición cubana,
si bien en el aeropuerto sólo dijeron que viajaban por motivos de
turismo para evitar que se les denegara la entrada en Cuba, informa Efe.
Payá y el miembro del Movimiento Cristiano de Liberación Harold Cepera
fallecieron en el accidente, que provocó que el coche en el que viajaban
diera varias vueltas de campana.
Carromero y Modig resultaron heridos,
aunque su estado, en principio, no reviste gravedad.
La hija de Oswaldo Payá, María,denunció ayer que, según el testimonio de
los supervivientes, un
segundo coche embistió varias veces, intentando sacarlo de la carretera,
el vehículo en el que viajaba Payá con sus tres acompañantes.
NNGG, en cambio, prefiere mantener la prudencia hasta que Carromero
regrese a Madrid y ha evitado especular en torno a las
circunstancias en las que se produjo el accidente.
