Moringa Oleífera: The Tree of Life?
In the most recent Reflexiones by Comrade Fidel we learned
that everything is ready for the country to start mass producing Moringa
Oleífera and Morera which are inexhaustible sources of meat, eggs and
milk.
ARNALDO MIRABAL HERNÁNDEZ
A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.
Omar
Rodríguez Santamaría never imagined that his studies on Moringa Oleífera
would become so interesting or that the farm where he was born would be
visited by so many people from so many places.
He lives in the center of Varadero, but many people say he is a typical
farmer: he demands respect for the women in his family –he has three
daughters- and does not like people taking fruit from his trees without
his permission.
He spends most of his time in his farm -named Placido after is father-
in Cantel, a small town in Cardenas. A beautiful cherry tree in full
blossom welcomes visitors to his property.
Next to his many mango trees, ornamental plants, pigs, and bulls there
is a wide and ventilated country house where he receives visitors with a
glass of freshly squeezed juice. There we talk about the new attraction,
the project that has captivated so many people who ask him to talk about
the subject time and again. Despite the many times he has explained it,
he is passionate when discussing Moringa Oleifera.
Considered the tree of life or miracle tree, it has many properties,
among these increasing the density of bones, fighting nervous
breakdowns, reducing fatigue and heart diseases, and improving the
erectile function.
“In Cuba it was known as Tilo americano. I had the possibility of
visiting Venezuela and in a research institute there they asked me if I
knew about the plant. I explained I didn’t. Back on the Island I started
investigating. Here it is also known as Paraíso Francés, Palo Blanco
or Palo Jeringa.”
“I studied its real potential and did bibliographic research. In Cuba,
its flowers were used to control nervousness; that was all. I had also
heard that when children became restless and mischievous they were
bathed with Moringa water to calm them down.”
“I started to work on my own farm testing its properties. After a year I
presented a paper in Porcicultura Tropical 2010, later at a
Conference in the Instituto de Ciencia Animal and also at a Congress of
Tropical Cattle Raisers.”
“One day, Concepción Campa phoned me and told me the Commander-in-Chief
was interested in my work. After that I had the opportunity to talk
directly to him and share all my information.”
Is this plant really useful for animal feeding?
We can use it on the farm as part of the different systems. We must
keep in mind that these must be multi-functional. When we talk about
animal nutrition we must include energy and protein. In fact part of the
protein is imported, and thus we must try to obtain it in our fields.
From a sustainability perspective we need to obtain it from our own
farms.”
“Sometimes we talk about feeding bulls, but this means a considerable
investment. By using leaves as a component in the system we can minimize
costs and integrate trees into cattle production.”
“I’m totally for the transformation of the system of animal feeding. We
must strive to produce food in the country.”
“There is no other plant that could produce as many tons of fresh
biomass as Moringa. It can produce between 400 and 600 tons per
hectare.”
Don’t you think Moringa may have the same luck as Noni of which so
much was said at the beginning and which is now forgotten?
“Noni was a kind of madness then. Everybody planted it, but nobody
had really tested its effectiveness. First of all, the juice of its seed
has a very bad taste. It is true that is contains many anti-oxidants,
but there was no systematic follow-up.”
“The difference I see with Moringa is that this has been studied in many
parts of the world. There are impressive results in humans, and every
little thing I have discovered has been through practice.”
“The tests I have carried out on my animals show that Moringa is a
viable alternative, in keeping with climate change, very resistant to
drought, typical of countries with very difficult climate conditions.”
“Our visitors are amazed at the properties of Moringa Oleífera, a plant
rich in protein, minerals, vitamins and carbohydrates; very complete. So
far it is the most nutritious vegetable known with more than 90
compounds, including 46 anti oxidant and 36 anti-inflammatory.”
“It contains all the macro minerals: calcium, magnesium, potassium,
phosphorus and sulfur. The seed has great amounts of iron, vitamin B1,
essential oils Omega 3, 6 and 9. It controls high blood pressure, heals
ulcers, relax the nervous system and favors concentration and sleep.”
“Many tests were made on the seed and its capacity to purify water. In
different countries there have been concrete results.”
Omar has a certain resemblance to writer Ernest Hemingway. As the author
he likes to write and talk about what he knows. He is open and shares
his experiences with every person that visits his farm disregarding
rank.
