The anti-Cubans of Miami

Recently, in the waiting room of a Miami doctor’s clinic, a middle-aged lady was bursting out insults against Cuba, and in a rather filthy language proffered lies and stupidity against her compatriots in the Island.

The people in the waiting room were astonished as they listened to that woman.

Nobody looked at her – I guess so she would not address them directly – but even without their attention, the woman kept up her verbal anti-Cuban attack. Only one person who had already been called to see her doctor asked, “Madam, how is it possible that you hate the country where you were born in so much?”

Cases like the one described above are easy to find in this city; at a party or a restaurant, the waiting room of a lawyer’s office or a doctor’s clinic. These are Cubans who live here and are full of hatred and scorn. Many of them travel to the Island quite regularly and know that most of the things they say are lies. They know that most Cubans are workers, not thieves, drunks or bums.

If they know all that, why do they act in such a despicable way? Why are they happy when Cuban athletes don’t get the first prize in any international competition? Simple: those Cubans are sick, and instead of seeking a cure for their disease they do the opposite. They listen to the radio stations that pour hatred against Cuba and its people; they watch the local TV shows where everything said – by both hosts and guests – is spurious and slandering propaganda. They also get their information from the newspapers in Spanish that circulate in the city whose task is to misinform on Cuban reality. These are the Cubans I'm talking about; they feed their hatred on a daily basis with the poison supplied by the Miami publicity media.

Although they are verbal terrorists operating in the streets and offices of the city, when they lived in Cuba or when they visit it now, they keep very quiet. Here they are extremists, radical anti-communists and totally anti-Cuban.

They are the ones below, the ones who get nothing for their lip service against their former homeland. But the most harmful are the other anti- Cubans: the ones who hold a microphone, write a newspaper column, or the politicians who hold positions in the different US administrations. These are the worst: the ones who have made it as Representatives or Senators to Congress. These are really damaging. They are well-informed about everything and have the power to push legislation in the Capitol to hurt Cuba and its people. They have been the promoters of all those criminal laws against the Cuban nation such as Helms-Burton, Torricelli, etc. The US government has supplied the sauce, but these individuals have provided the spice.

These characters are elected and re-elected with the votes of the masses of haters I mentioned before. They have them bewitched with their lies and anti-Cuban rhetoric, and –since they have the publicity media at their service and the money of the Cuban American extreme right to spend-- they have no problem being elected time and again. Such is the case of the “showy” Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who has grown old in Washington’s Capitol and there is no way she’ll let go.

Once they are in, they don’t want to go; except if they are found at fault as seems to be the cases of hysterical Lincoln Díaz-Balart or dumb Mel Martínez who resigned for undisclosed reasons.

And thus in South Florida there is a vicious circle that moves from the anti-Cubans below to the anti-Cubans above. Hatred towards Cuba unites them, but the economic benefit – as usual-- goes to the ones above, to the big bosses.

Los anticubanos de Miami

Recientemente, en la sala de espera de la consulta de un médico en Miami, una señora de mediana edad se explayaba en insultos contra Cuba, ensartando, en tono medio solariego, sandeces y mentiras contra sus compatriotas de la Isla.

Las personas que esperaban que les llegara su turno, estaban estupefactas al oír a aquella mujer. Nadie la miraba —imagino que para que no se dirigiera directamente a ellos—, pero aun sin la atención la mujer seguía con su verborrea anticubana. Solo una persona, a la que ya habían llamado para entrar a ver al médico, le preguntó: ¿Señora, cómo es posible que usted odie tanto al país que la vio nacer?

Casos como el descrito no son difíciles de ver en esta ciudad, lo mismo en una fiesta o un restaurante, que en la sala de espera de un abogado o en cualquier consulta médica. Son cubanos llenos de odio y rencor que aquí viven. Muchos de ellos viajan a la Isla con cierta regularidad y conocen que la mayor parte de las cosas que dicen son mentira. Saben que la mayoría de los cubanos son trabajadores, y no ladrones, borrachos o vagos.

Si conocen todo eso, ¿por qué actúan de tan despreciable forma? ¿Por qué se alegran cuando los deportistas cubanos no consiguen el primer lugar en cualquier competencia internacional? Sencillo: ese tipo de cubano está enfermo y, en vez de buscar remedio a su enfermedad, hace lo contrario. Oye las emisoras de radio que destilan odio contra Cuba y su pueblo, ve los programas de televisión locales donde todo lo que dicen —tanto los conductores de los mismos como los invitados que allí acuden— es propaganda mentirosa y difamatoria. Además, se informa también en los dos periódicos en español que circulan en la ciudad, cuya labor es desinformar  sobre la realidad cubana. Así es que el tipo de cubano al que me refiero, diariamente alimenta su odio con el veneno que le inyectan los medios de publicidad miamenses.

Aunque son terroristas verbales en las calles y oficinas de la ciudad, cuando vivían en Cuba, o cuando ahora la visitan, andan muy callados. Aquí son verdaderos comecandelas, anticomunistas radicales y totalmente anticubanos.

Esos son los de abajo, los que no reciben nada por hablar mal de su antigua patria. Pero quienes más daño hacen son los otros anticubanos, los que tienen un micrófono en las manos, una columna en un periódico o los políticos que ocupan cargos en los diferentes Gobiernos de Estados Unidos. Esos son los peores de todos, los que han llegado a congresistas y senadores en el congreso nacional. Esos sí hacen daño, sí están muy bien enterados de todo y sí tienen poder para crear legislaciones en el Capitolio y dañar a Cuba y a su pueblo. Han sido los promotores de todas esas criminales leyes que están vigentes contra la nación cubana, como la Helms-Burton, la Torricelli, etc. El Gobierno de Estados Unidos ha puesto la salsa, pero estos individuos le han puesto la sazón.

Estos personajes se eligen y se reeligen con el voto de esa masa de odiadores antes mencionados, a quienes tienen embrujados con sus mentiras y su retórica anticubana; y como tienen los medios de publicidad a su servicio y el dinero de la ultraderecha cubanoamericana a su disposición, no tienen problemas en ser electos una y otra vez. Ese es el caso de la «flamante» presidenta de la Comisión de Relaciones Exteriores de la Cámara de Representantes, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a quien le han salido canas en el Capitolio de Washington y de allí no hay quien la saque. Después que agarran no quieren soltar, a no ser que los cojan movidos, como parece ser el caso del histérico Lincoln Díaz-Balart o el del bobón de Mel Martínez, quienes renunciaron sin que se sepan sus verdaderos motivos para ello.

Así es que en el sur de la Florida se ha creado un círculo vicioso entre los anticubanos de abajo y los de arriba. El odio hacia Cuba y su pueblo los une, aunque el beneficio económico, como siempre, va para los de arriba, los grandes tahúres.
