A free, strong, educated people
As His Holiness Benedict XVI’s visit to Cuba draws closer, Cubans reminisce about our long tradition of struggle for human redemption.

In reference to popular education, José Martí came to conclusions as impressive, topical, accurate and profound as the rest of his thinking. Said the Apostle:
“An ignorant people can be deceived by superstition and become servile. An instructed people will always be strong and free. An ignorant man is on his way to becoming a beast, and a man instructed in knowledge and conscience is on his way to being a god. One must not hesitate to choose between a nation of gods and a nation of beasts. The best way to defend our rights is to know them well; in so doing, one has faith and strength. The happiest people is the one that has well educated all its children”.[1]
Accordingly, the Cuban Revolution turned people’s education –starting with the Literacy Campaign– into the cornerstone of its every goal, in the conviction that it would become the indispensable stepping-stone to national development, both in intellectual and material terms.
Today this purpose can be said to have been more than fulfilled and improved. It’s an objective fact that becomes patently obvious every time we host an extraordinary event in which science and conscience go hand in hand as proof that we are getting closer to Martí’s ideal of faith and fortitude, as befits our ultimate ambition.
An event of this nature is precisely the visit that His Holiness Benedict XVI will soon pay to Cuba, which brings to mind our long tradition of struggle for human redemption.
In our case, we must bear in mind that our struggle was accepted and fostered from the days of the priest Félix Varela, whose disciple José de la Luz y Caballero called “the man who first taught us to think”, heir to the purest Christian values he embraced in his ethical commitment to redeem man in favor of the poor of the Earth.
As a Cuban deeply inclined toward ecumenism and follower of the man who died in the cross, Varela clearly embodied the universal pledge of a nation in the making and put if forward as the ethical postulate of his life and the essence of his apostolic vocation.
I have always been grateful to him for not using his faith against the principles and methods of science. Far from that: his must have been extraordinary faith, for he encouraged scientific thinking at a time when science was deemed the antithesis of religious feelings.
All of the above serves to explain the reason that Cubans, be they believers or otherwise, have always been sufficiently consistent with the purity of their humanistic feelings, beyond any philosophical view, to side up with the best, deepest and most advanced ideals of their nation and the human race in general.
Those days more than ten years ago when His Holiness John Paul –then the Supreme Pontiff– shared with our people are unforgettable, since it was the first time in Cuban history that we received the head of the Roman Catholic Church, no doubt a key actor of contemporary history, toward whom we feel a deep sense of gratitude and whose memories we cherish.
When Fidel Castro said in the early years of the Revolution that “he who betrays the poor betrays Christ”, he was having a premonition of the way to open a coherent dialogue among all religious currents and making a contribution without precedent in the history of believers and nonbelievers that provided for their respectful coexistence, not only in theory but in the living practice of the day-to-day.
This is possible because we are a free, strong and educated people capable of projecting toward the future not only its purest emotions and principles but also its present social and democratic aspirations.
This is the people who will greet Pope Benedict XVI and be honored with his presence in this, his second visit to Latin America, to join with the parishioners now celebrating the 400th anniversary of the finding of the image of our Virgin of Charity of El Cobre in her Holy Year.
Thank you, on behalf of all of Martí’s adherents, for this pastoral visit and for your noble and courageous gesture, which we will never forget.

Refiriéndose a la educación popular, José Martí llegó a conclusiones que, como todo su pensamiento, impresionarían por su vigencia, certeza y profundidad. Dijo el Apóstol:
«A un pueblo ignorante puede engañársele con la superstición, y hacérsele servil. Un pueblo instruido será siempre fuerte y libre. Un hombre ignorante está en camino de ser bestia, y un hombre instruido en la ciencia y en la conciencia, ya está en camino de ser Dios. No hay que dudar entre un pueblo de Dioses y un pueblo de bestias. El mejor modo de defender nuestros derechos, es conocerlos bien; así se tiene fe y fuerza: toda nación será infeliz en tanto que no eduque a todos sus hijos»1.
La Revolución Cubana, por tanto, hizo de la instrucción del pueblo —empezando por la Campaña de Alfabetización—, la piedra angular de todos sus propósitos, convencida de que ello serviría de base imprescindible a todo el desarrollo del país, tanto en lo intelectual como en lo material.
Este propósito podemos comprobarlo hoy como ventajosamente cumplido y avanzando en su perfeccionamiento. Es un hecho objetivo que se nos hace presente cada vez que en nuestro país tiene lugar un acontecimiento extraordinario, donde ciencia y conciencia van de la mano y se confirma que nos acercamos a la idea martiana de fe y de fuerza, suprema aspiración que tenemos como pueblo.
Un acontecimiento de esa naturaleza es la próxima visita a Cuba de Su Santidad Benedicto XVI, que nos hace rememorar a los cubanos nuestra larga historia de luchas a favor de la redención del hombre.
En el caso de nuestro país, no olvidar que esas luchas se comprendieron e impulsaron desde los tiempos del sacerdote Félix Varela, caracterizado por su discípulo José de la Luz y Caballero como «el hombre que nos enseñó primero en pensar», quien fue heredero de la más pura tradición cristiana y supo asumirla junto a la redención del hombre como un compromiso ético a favor de los pobres de la Tierra.
Varela, cubano de profunda vocación ecuménica que había abrazado los ideales del hombre que murió en la cruz, incluía obviamente, el compromiso universal de la nación que se gestaba, formulándolo como postulado ético de su vida y convirtiéndolo en contenido de su proyección apostólica.
Siempre le he agradecido que su fe religiosa no se manifestara en antagonismo con los principios y métodos de la ciencia; mucho debió ser el valor de su fe cuando estimuló el pensamiento científico en un tiempo en que se le situaba en contradicción con los sentimientos religiosos.
Todo lo anterior nos sirve para explicarnos por qué creyentes o no, en Cuba, cuando han sido consecuentes con la pureza de sus sentimientos humanistas y más allá de concepciones filosóficas, se han colocado siempre junto a los ideales más puros y profundos de la nación y los más avanzados de la humanidad en cada momento de la historia.
Los días en que, hace más de diez años, el Beato Juan Pablo II, entonces Sumo Pontífice, estuvo junto a nuestro pueblo resultaron inolvidables, pues fue la primera ocasión en la historia de nuestro país en que el jefe de la iglesia católica, apostólica y romana nos visitó, dejando un grato recuerdo y agradecimiento hacia quien fue sin duda una de las figuras fundamentales de la historia contemporánea.
Cuando, en los años iniciales de la Revolución, Fidel Castro pudo afirmar que «quien traiciona al pobre, traiciona a Cristo», abrió premonitoriamente un camino y posibilitó un diálogo coherente con todas las denominaciones religiosas, haciendo un aporte sin precedentes en la historia de las creencias y de los no creyentes; conviviendo respetuosamente no solo en teoría sino en la práctica viva de la cotidianidad.
Eso es posible porque somos un pueblo instruido, fuerte y libre, capaz de articular hacia el futuro los sentimientos emocionales y principios más puros con las aspiraciones sociales y democráticas de la contemporaneidad.
Ese será el pueblo que recibirá al Papa Benedicto XVI, quien nos honrará con su presencia en esta segunda visita que hace a América Latina, acompañando a los feligreses que celebran el aniversario 400 del hallazgo de la imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en su año jubilar.
Gracias, en nombre de todos los martianos, por esta visita pastoral y por su gesto noble y valiente. No lo olvidaremos.
