Havana, Nov 8 (EFE) .- An activist for the rights of sexual diversity in Cuba has requested that the new population census to be developed in 2012 include indicators to tell couples in the LGBT community, although the laws of the island does not yet recognize the legal union between members of the same sex.

"The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) must demand that our families be included in this social investigation", according to journalist and activist Francisco Rodriguez in his blog "Cuba's Paquito," a web of defense LGBT rights best known of the island.

At the entrance of Tuesday, Rodriguez recalled that the National Census of Population and Housing will be held in Cuba in September 2012 and one of the indicators to be measured is the civil status of persons.

"It would be restrictive, discriminatory and also true that the people who make it appear same-sex couples and unmarried or single, when in reality we live in a consensual union or in fact, perhaps not by choice but by the lack of any other legal relationship possible," he says.

The journalist and blogger notes that other Latin American countries have already made similar uprisings, and cites cases such as Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. in 2010, in Costa Rica this year, which will be held in Chile in 2012.

Rodriguez says Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro and director of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), has asked the National Statistics Office that "the possibility of incorporating values in the survey questions that help (...) quantitatively identify such realities. "

The blog notes that census information would help the LGBT community "in the current" living the island, where the ruling Communist Party has announced it will discuss the need to address sexual orientation discrimination at their National Conference in January.

It further indicates that the data would allow it to "further substantiate" the need to transform the Family Code to recognize aspects of sexual minorities rights such as a legal union between gay couples.

The reform of the Family Code is included in a draft submitted by CENESEX which is pending approval and currently pending in the Ministry of Justice, but activists have denounced "obstacles" and "delay" in the process.

Paquito el de Cuba ("Cuba's Paquito") also calls for the LGBT community to increase its activity in social networks and "in every possible space groups and civil society" and to make this request to the National Statistics Office.
