Year 15 / Number 285 EIGHTY YEARS OF CHRIST REDEEMER The statue of Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the city considered Brazilian icon and a marvel of the modern world, is celebrating its 80 years. The giant 38 meters high each year receives more than one million tourists. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. In 1973 it was declared a historical monument and one of the seven wonders of the world in 2007. The Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, was in charge of the project, and artist Carlos Oswald made final design of the statue, which was made by Frenchman Paul Landowski. (Telesur) |
